How can I buy a PS5?

Both Spiders-Man are super fun games, but you may want to play something in between them -- mechanically they're very, very similar, so having a little space to appreciate Miles Morales on its own terms could be nice.

Also, I saw that you said you'd missed the PS4 generation, so if you're interested in Elden Ring you should probably throw Bloodborne on your recommendations list too. Elden Ring is probably a little more beginner-friendly, oddly enough, but Bloodborne still feels incredible.

Actually, you may want to consider signing up for PS+ since it'll give you free access to a bunch of PS4 games (some of which were already recommended, like Bloodborne and God of War) for as long as you're subscribed. You may not care about some/any of these, but if enough seem interesting it could be worthwhile if the cost of subscribing is less than the cost of the games you want. From Sony's announcement back when it launched:

From Worldwide Studios:

  • Bloodborne
  • Days Gone
  • Detroit: Become Human
  • God of War
  • Infamous Second Son
  • Ratchet and Clank
  • The Last Guardian
  • The Last of Us Remastered
  • Until Dawn
  • Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
From our third-party publishers and developers:

  • Batman: Arkham Knight
  • Battlefield 1
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Zombies Chronicles Edition
  • Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
  • Fallout 4
  • Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition
  • Monster Hunter: World
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Persona 5
  • Resident Evil 7 biohazard

Don’t forget about Astro’s Playroom, which is pre-installed on your PS5. It’s a quick little Mario-style 3D platformer that’s more fun than it has any right to be.

An excellent point from Dr. Owl! It was intended to be a little showcase of all the stuff you can do with the PS5 controller, but Astro's Playroom is actually pretty fun and very cute. It's also very heavy on Playstation nostalgia, which may or may not appeal to you. Only takes a couple of hours to play through, unless you're a completionist. Definitely recommended.

When I had PS+, you had to get games the month they were available, then you would have access while you were subscribed. Is that still the case, or did they add games that are available for everyone who signs up?

Yeah, this is a separate thing from the monthly games called "the PlayStation Plus Collection". I could've made that more clear in my original post, sorry!

So is doing the thing in the title any easier than it used to be? We tried for a while and eventually gave up

I think ordering them online is as much of a bag of nonsense as it has been, but getting them in-store may be easier? In my case at least it involved calling up the spots locally now and then and I eventually got lucky.

The co-op getting added to Returnal makes me feel like I finally want to do this soon, maybe? We're getting pretty close to that five game tipping point for me. Hopefully, by the time I pull the trigger, I won't have to do an eldrich ritual to bring forth an available game.

I was one of the lucky folks to get a direct email solicitation from Sony, right around the time they introduced the new PS5 revision with a slightly less beefy internal cooling assembly. I'm guessing those two events were related.

I briefly considered reselling it before realizing a PS5 was a good substitute for buying a new PC GPU, which have been nearly impossible to find at MSRP for awhile now.

I get emails and whatnot fairly often but they're always about bundles, so if you're willing to pay more for extra, they seem easier to snag than before.

This is a small potatoes problem compared to the point of this thread, but anyway my PS5 controller started drifting on the right analog stick tonight. It's no longer under warranty because I've had this for over a year. So I'm either gonna mangle this controller, or buy a new one and figure out who would want a drifting PS5 controller. It definitely took less time to get drift compared to my Joycon!

I seem to have successfully placed an order. Walmart got some in today, they told me, although it required being a paid subscriber to their damn premium service, so counting a month of that it did come out to a bit above MSRP.
