How can I buy a PS5?

The PS5 was the reason I moved from PC to console for FF14. Just the minimized loading alone was worth it; teleporting and it taking a second, maybe two seconds, was worth the price of having to figure out how to play with a controller again. Game looks incredible, too.

My PC still runs FFXIV better than the PS5, but everything else has been such a lovely upgrade for games I already own and don’t want to repurchase on PC.

I want to finish Horizon before I get lost in Lesbian Ancient Greece again. Cos I desperately wanted a PS5 before replaying it.

Where do you all keep your PS5’s? My TV stand is made of a number of not very large enclosures, and I assume that a system as big as the PS5 needs a lot of breathing room. If I manage to get one I don’t have anywhere to put it.

Being vertical makes it have a relatively small footprint. Right now I have it standing tall on the dresser next to my PC. If I had it out in the living room though where there's less obvious places it could stay, I would probably just pull the flat panel forward and stick it vertically behind the TV. I don't think that would be to big of a deal on account of the ventilation system of the PS5 has the air all flow upwards out the top.

We have ours standing up. Had to take the shelf out cos it’s so fucking big.

Didn’t want to put it behind the telly cos ours gives off a ridiculous amount of heat at the back.

I've traditionally been reluctant to have my disc-based consoles standing vertical, as I vaguely remember hearing how the PS2 sometimes had issues reading discs while vertically oriented.

Then again, I'm planning to stay mostly digital on PS5 (despite ponying-up for the more expensive model with disc drive), so it's probably a moot point...

I keep mine vertical because that's the only way it can even exist in my setup, but I'm deathly worried about dust. My apartment is above a major avenue with lots of trees, so I have to dust every week, basically. And a vertical PS5 sucks in air from the top to expel at the bottom, so I'm worried about it swallowing dust through those huge intakes, and how often I'll need to open it up to clean it.

Technically neither of my top 2 PS5 killer apps are exclusives, since both Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring are also coming out on PS4. But like... no, obviously I want them on PS5 if I have a choice.

Demon's Souls remake is definitely up there as well, and that one is exclusive. I should start trying harder to track down a 5 so I can play it before Elden Ring comes out...

PS2 was designed to be used vertically. I kept mine vertical for most of its life, never had a problem with it. I could see the tray-loading DVD drive maybe not keeping disks in 100% securely while vertical, but through the annecodtal evidence of a lifetime of use, that was never a problem. It was also never a problem with my PS3 or PS4 which I also kept vertical, both of which you'd think ostensibly would be even better fits for vertical use since the slot-drives hold disks a lot more securely. Either way I would not worry about vertical placement of the machine messing with the disk drive.

Taking the front cover off and getting to the intake isn't very hard on a PS5, and the little mesh filter over the fan intakes is easy enough to vacuum out. That alone should keep the internals of your PS5 cleaner for longer than last gen or any other gaming alternative. Someday way down the line, you might need to do a more thorough cleaning of the fans and heatsinks, but that'll probably be long enough in the future that either 1) you'll be done with the machine or 2) the ball bearings on the fans will have run their course anyways.

Got the PS5 today, and it's one of the newer CFI-1100 revision models. I knew these things were supposed to be large, but damn, this thing is like the size of a boogie board. Vertical orientation was basically the only option without totally rearranging my current A/V setup, which is fine since it looks better standing up anyway.

So anyway Ratchet & Clank is probably the most gorgeous-looking vidjagame I've ever laid eyes on, holy shit

My only complaint with ratchet and clank is there isn’t a sheepinator equivalent that I found. I like turning my enemies into exploding animals.

Currently playing through the FFVII remake dlc then will probably try returnal or deathloop. Too much stuff to play!

I look forward to hearing your thoughts about it, I don't think anyone else on the forums have played it (or if they have, discussed their experiences). I liked it a lot and it was a pretty nifty preview for the kinds of stuff we'll hopefully see/do in 7R-2. But it's kinda on the short side, even if you do everything in it.

Yeah I’m not expecting anything terribly long. I did the Fort Condor and Happy Turtle stuff pretty much immediately and just finally pushed the plot further slightly.

Yuffie is pretty fun to play, looking forward to actually doing a few battles.

Word around the campfire is that some stores are finally starting to sell these in brick-and-mortar locations, specifically Best Buy. Might be worth looking out for.

Managed to order a PS5 from Wal-Mart over a month ago. It didn't ship out until 2 weeks ago, and then it started running late- it was supposed to arrive on the 13th, but was still lagging behind. On Sunday I got a message from FedEx stating that they were unable to deliver the package. When I called customer service (by the way, their system sucks- it was very hard to get through their system to talk to an actual person) they said that they couldn't deliver it because the weight they measured at the most recent facility it was at did not match the weight it was listed at. This leads me to believe that somebody at FedEx stole my PS5.

Anyway, I contacted Wal-Mart about a refund and I got it, so I'm back to square one after getting really excited a month ago.

Finished it, took me about 8 hours.

Loved it, Yuffie was a lot of fun to control and mixing it up between ranged/melee/synergising was all really cool.

Final little movie was a fun surprise, benefit of never bothering really look anything up about this dlc.

Sorry to hear that. And yeah Fedex is easily, EASILY, the worst delivery company ever. I've never had a remotely good interaction with them ever for any kind of package over the years. I would happily pay extra money just to get things delivered to me by not!Fedex.

Yuffie took a while for me to click with how to use her, but once I did she was a ton of fun to control. Her elemental attacks too are really great, it sure would have been nice to have had access to those while fighting the Hell House. 😂 Glad you enjoyed the DLC, I can't wait to see what they've got for part 2, the DLC was a great preview of things to come imo.

Well, lo and behold, I managed to get a PS5 from the Playstation Direct Queue a few hours ago, so hopefully Sony doesn't use FedEx as well.

There was another Playstation 5 thread but that one had only like 12 replies and this one was updated more recently ANYWAY

I got super lucky today and managed to snag a PS5 (disc ver) locally. Kind of an impulse buy, but I knew in my heart of hearts I couldn't pass on the opportunity, and I knew I'd want something to play FFXVI on whenever it comes out.

First thoughts: This is a chunky fella! Possibly the heaviest vidyagame console I ever owned?

Second thought: Oh right I didn't get any games.

So I guess that's where my posting in this thread comes in. Besides bragging about actually getting one anyway. Any recommendations? Also for PS4 stuff that works on this, since I skipped that generation.

I currently got my eye on the FF7 remake, NieR Automata (a PS4 game I know but apparently it just works on PS5?), Horizon Zero Dawn, and maybe even Elden Ring (total From Software newbie, but I've heard enough good things about this one to pique my interest), but also I'm wondering if there are any notable digital-only games or free to play malarky that's worth checking out?

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the best R&C game yet, and it's gorgeous, and it loads so fast. It's basically Insomniac showing off to the max

Yeah, Rift Apart is great. I like FFVII Remake a lot, too, but the pacing can be a little slow at times.

Thirding this. R&C: Rift Apart is probably the best looking game I've ever seen (with the right display.)

I'm not sure what kinds of game you prefer, but I'd also look at Returnal, Ghost of Tsushima, both Horizons, both Spider-Mans, Deathloop, God of War, the Demon's Souls remake, and Gran Turismo 7 - this one gives R&C a run for its money in the graphics dept - is lovely if you enjoy racing games.

Keep in mind even multi-platform, multi-gen stuff is worth visiting or revisiting because of those sweet, sweet load times; storage speed is the actual oh-holy-shitballs factor of the current-gen consoles.

Most high profile PS4 games you haven't played yet/have been meaning to play or get back to will look substantially better on PS5 and is worth trying out. Especially if it had a next gen upgrade. I can personally vouch for the Spider-Mans and FF7R (my GotY for the last two years running). Even in games where the jump in visual fidelity isn't always apparently like the recent Assassin's Creeds, the generational jump will be immediately just from a logistical perspective like loading times. "Fast Traveling" in Assassin's Creed Origins/Odyssey on PS4 was something where you could expect to have to put your controller down for a minute or more on a regular basis. Playing Valhalla on PS5 though was revelatory, when minute-plus load times turned into one or two seconds max.

4-So made a bunch of great recommendations, but I particularly want to second Deathloop. That game was fantastic.

Having never played a Racket and Clunk game before, what could I expect?
They're 3rd-person action games that feature platforming and a large array of goofy weapons. The Ratchet games have always been touted as looking like Pixar movies, but in this case it's really, incredibly true. They've made like 10 of these games and they're admittedly kind of samey, but even so I think Rift Apart is among the best of them and a great game in its own right. On top of looking fantastic, it has fluid controls, a good story and some truly impressive use of the PS5's fast SSD. I played the game on the performance RT setting, which generally maintains 60 FPS but keeps ray traced lighting, which is the sweet spot for me. But you can swing the needle in either direction for a game that looks legitimately outstanding at 30 FPS, or else smoother performance at a lower resolution.

Seconding 4-So's recs, and I really recommend the new Gran Turismo 7 that just was released. If you've ever played a GT game before, it's the same formula, use real world cars and possibly real-ish tuning to try to drive fast and accurate, also while not having any crash physics or consequences for bumping into things. The game progression's good, you drive for a bit and earn money to buy new cars, or tweak existing cars, and you get new cars for "free" by completing races. I like the daily workout aspect, where if you drive for 26.2 miles in a day they give you a raffle ticket for either more money, free parts, or even a free car. It's a nice incentive to just play for a half hour a day.

It's a gorgeous game, but the world it exists in is still weird. It only exists for cars and racing, and it breathlessly talks about every single car like they are the most amazing invention ever made. I know nothing about cars except for go fast and make the tuning numbers go up, but I like the soothing nature of it. I haven't played a GT since 2, but it definitely feels just like those games I played in high school.

I picked up my first game. Due to relatively low availability of a lot of titles that were on the tip top of my list I decided to buy the Spiders Men game (Miles Morales + Marvel's Spiderman PS5 edition), since I've wanted to play that first title since I first saw it on PS4. Looking forward to getting up to some Friendly Neighborhood shenanigans!

I also want to get the FF7 remake. The PS4 version is available at the local walmart, but not the PS5 one. Should I hold out for the PS5 one specifically, or can you upgrade the PS4 one? I'm not sure how that side of it works.

PS4 one upgrades for free. PS5 is essentially the same thing functionally, besides it coming with the Yuffie DLC that you'll have to pay for separately if you buy the PS4 ver. I'd go with the PS4 ver unless the difference in price between the two is less than the price of the DLC
