HOLD MY CURTAIN CALLS, THERE'S A NEW THEATRHYTHM: Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line

It's very cute how the game will congratulate characters on their birthdays. Eiko has the spotlight now since "March" is the closest to a specific date there is for her.

The Live A Live tracks are also out. Not a fan of the game or its music, but it's interesting the Hironobu Kageyama vocal track from the remake made it in. Its cut is maybe the shortest in the game, though.

I'd have liked to see more Live A Live tracks, but at least they gave us the important one, either the OG or '2DHD' version of Megalomania would have been fine but I'm happy they chose the original.

A bit of a missed opportunity not to add Gigalomania though. Maybe they didn't want to spoil the additional final boss added to the remaster?

I’ve always been kind of meh on the design style and find it a bit Funko Pop-ish, but the attention to detail wins me over when I’m watching the game in motion. Like, when Krile runs on screen I’ll spend a split second thinking she’s Terra, since they look so similar, but they carry themselves very differently so the confusion doesn’t last long.

It’s always delightful when I have two party members going “ha ha, weeee” and two going “grrr, scowl, angst angst angst.”

I’m curious how much time it took to figure out everyone’s birthday.

All the more reason Terra should have green hair like god intended.

I feel slightly like a bad JAM Project fan for not knowing Kageyama even recorded this track to begin with, but I am maximum excited it's in Theatrhythm!

Idle thought as I keep working on the Ultimate clears and assorted other goals: at the top of my wishlist for the game are the 25+ tracks Noriko Matsueda, with a little help from Kumi Tanioka, did for the PlayOnline interface which is of course synonymous with FFXI to this day. They encompass some of the best music ever associated with the series, full of playful and inventive time signatures that would be really fun to build charts around in addition to loving the music for its own idiosyncratic merits. Most of the tracks range between two and three minutes in length, so there's enough there in that respect too.

I pulled up a few of those tracks on YT (having never heard them before since I've never played XI), and they do seem pretty unique, I daresay better than the tracks from XI we actually got in the game (no offense to fans of XI).

I've been playing the FFVI Pixel Remaster the past few days, and I'm baffled none of the tracks from these games are in FBL. All the remixes of Battle on the Big Bridge* and all the various VII remixes and games and everything, and notta from those remasters, most of which have pretty cool remixes of the original games. When I'm done with VI, I plan to play the V remaster, which I barely touched when it came out (mainly because I'd just played the GBA version just before the remasters were announced lol. Ditto VI, tbh).

*which I don't mean to harp on, the song rules, and the All-star Carnival remix is one of the best things I've ever heard lmao

Notes for the patch released today on PS4 and coming to Switch March 4. Sounds like they fixed the Summonstone bug (among others), so once you apply the patch it should be safe to delete them.

i suppose it wasn't a specifically final fantasy tool (it's legacy is for sure), but playonline should have a least a little bit of representation. It's an inseparable part of ffxi, you hear it before you hear anything from the ffxi soundtrack.

wont be listening to slander on ffxi music. it's the best mmo in the series!

This may very well be the case, I've never played XI. It has better music than XII, I'll give it that, but coming from me that's hardly praise lol

I've heard that a bunch but I don't think I agree. Sakimoto is a very melodic composer despite his reputation--they're just not Uematsu prog rock-inflected melodies. Many of his tracks offer really compelling percussive elements like march beats that settle in nicely with the needs of the charting patterns in a game like this, and particularly with the track selection both Tactics and XII have going in the game, there's heavy use of leitmotif to further anchor those patterns to. I've had a lot of fun enjoying the music in this context and find it pretty legible to parse.

The only song I can think of in the game that I don't think fits well (or is just a badly done note chart) is Femme Fatale from Mobius Final Fantasy. I don't even dislike the song, really, it's just that the notes seem arbitrary, or my ancient ears can't hear what notes correspond to each button press lol (even with headphones).

Speaking of Mobius Final Fantasy, how come there's no tracks from Final Fantasy Dimensions? It's odd that Mobius has representation in this game but isn't playable anymore, yet Dimensions is nowhere to be seen... Granted, it's been years since I played Dimensions and maybe the music sucks, I don't recall it lol

Has anyone devised a good strategy for those 'Defeat the Boss in X seconds' quests? Or, is there a good repository of info and tips for this game collected anywhere? Every time I go searching for answers on things like leveling or item drops I just have to pour through various reddit threads or comment sections.

Look for characters with skills that trigger when a boss appears, like Terra, Noctis, Cloud, Sephiroth, etc. Also consider Materia or Spiritus, who give a hefty boost to the leader’s damage output. You want a nuke that will melt the boss as quickly as possible. Noctis is a must for stages with multiple bosses because he has unlimited mini-nukes.

Princess Sarah is a great pick for stages that hit you with statuses other than Silence. Silence will wipe out the spell queue and her Esuna-type skill only procs after you have status. The trick there is to silence the boss before it silences you, which can be done by someone like Sephiroth. Seph is great because he has both a boss silence attack and a nuke, though you want him as the leader and his silence skill in the top slot so it triggers before anyone else.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding those quests, if it asks you to beat a boss within 30 seconds is it 30 seconds from song start or 30 seconds from when the boss appears? I'm sure I've killed a boss within 30 seconds of it appearing and not gotten a quest clear so I was worried it meant from song start. If that was the case then I wasn't sure how to build a party that could kill a lot of normal enemies quickly AND a boss in 30 seconds, but it not then I just need to beef up my boss busters a bit more to make sure I get them under the wire.

(He/Him/His)
I was pretty sure it’s from when the boss appears, because I’m still pretty bad at clearing out trash mobs efficiently. But I guess I should actually time it because I’m not sure!

Kazin

(he/him)
@SpoonyBard It's absolutely 30 seconds from when the boss appears. I've beaten all the quests and know this for a fact from my own experience haha. Yeah, focusing on boss killing skills is the way to go, though for clearing out mobs to get to the boss, Yuna is great with Grand Summon, since that pretty much clears out the first mob right way. Otherwise, boosting your "trigger damage" via summonstone helps, too, since that increases how much damage you do every time you hit a note, so combining that with high damage physical attackers will speed up getting through mobs.

So I'm trying to super clear the FF1 quests and I'm having trouble with the last one, a lot of bosses haven't given me trouble since I started focusing on boss-busting but Chaos seems extra tanky, and I have no idea how close I am to defeating him when the song ends.

Getting through the mobs leading up to him was a challenge too since I've been lazy and haven't leveled Yuna up yet (guess I'll have to do that) but I found Kefka with Poison makes short work with at least the first two packs, but the third one slows me down a lot still. Right now I have Seph with his unique ability, and Silence Buster to keep Chaos from effing with me, Faris with Dual Wield and some physical abilities, and Cloud with Ultima Blade (is Omnislash better?) and the two higher levels Aero Blade to help mop up the enemies, and Kefka with Heartless angel and Poison and whichever other frequent-use magic he has I forget which.

Any tips, or must-have skills?

Kazin

did i do all of that?
(he/him)
@SpoonyBard So iirc, Chaos resists all types of damage, including Ultima Blade/Omnislash, which themselves are slash damage. If you don't want to powerlevel some characters, a character with a good magic stat and Ultima itself will be good, because Ultima isn't resisted, while Ultima Blade is (no, it doesn't make much sense, but there it is anyway lol). Physical damage isn't great against enemies like Chaos who resist everything - you're going to want something that bypasses resistance, and there's not much that does, though Ultima and iirc some exclusive personal abilities some characters have do. You can totally beat Chaos even with physical attackers if you have the stats (and maybe a summonstone with "boost trigger damage"), but that requires some grinding to get to. If you've leveled, say, Terra, she gets Ultima, and her personal special is Dualcast so she'll cast it twice, so she's a good one to use, though there are absolutely others.

This is another reason Magic users are much better in general than Physical attackers for clearing quests. My go-to boss-busters are Terra or Shantotto, paired with Spiritus to boost them in the leader slot. I don't remember if Vivi learns Ultima but if so, he would be another really good choice for this too. Basically, I'm dedicating an entire slot + a support so that they can kill the boss immediately when it shows up.

Kazin

(he/him)
@YangusKhan right, good point - Spiritus has an ability to boost the damage the party leader does, but you can use a scroll to teach anyone Mystic Aura, which is a weaker version of Spiritus's ability, so you may want to give that a shot, @SpoonyBard.

I have not been able to test it yet, but I saw a strategy last night that posited you could get Spiritus going with his magic buffs, and then involve Ramza and Bartz to mimic that, and then your leader magic user becomes a murder machine. Sounds good! In theory!

I still couldn't beat the dang quest even after leveling up Yuna, Spiritus, and trying various builds to prioritize Terra's Ultima, or Yuna's mob-killing, but I just couldn't get Chaos down in time by the time he appeared in the song.

Then I came across this Youtube video which used Tyro Mimicking his own unique buff with some deliberate setup and, weirdly, played on the lowest difficulty. I leveled Tyro up and replicated the setup and won.

Sprite

(He/Him/His)
Oh hey, I didn’t know Tyro learned Mimic. Neat!

What’s cool about the quests is that it seems like there are a number of ways to clear them, and a party that cleaves through one quest might totally whiff another. I had to deliberately screw up triggers in one in order to proc a skill at precisely the right time and it was thrilling.

SpoonyBard

(He/Him)
I'm sure there's a lot of neat interactions and all but I haven't really been able to grok the most complicated ones yet, especially when I'm focused more on hitting the triggers while in the music stage so I have a hard time seeing how well a new strategy is doing beyond 'did the enemy I want die?'. I'm still not sure why, exactly, that new strategy I linked to there worked where all my other attempts didn't, I guess it's due to the specific timing of Tyro's big buff being the last ability used prior to Mimic but I'm not sure how you begin to plot that out.

Kirin

Summon for hire
(he/him)
Wait, it seemed like one of those Mimic procs actually mimicked Kefka's poison (it went off before the buff since it was placed first) which helped clear the mobs, and I had no idea mimicking poison would proc it two more times at... I guess just the same intervals? It went off once when it wasn't even the beginning of a battle round which is wild. And I'm actually not even sure what the second Mimic proc copied, I didn't see anything else go off and I only saw Fantasy Unbound trigger twice, which it would do naturally. Unless it just didn't display or got lost in the wave of boss triggered attacks.

Anyway I'm just starting to dip my toes in the postgame as I only just now finally rolled credits and unlocked all the songs. As others said, saving the Theatrhythm remixes quest for last is quite a rush with all the medleys. Also the credits background animation is just about the most freakin delightful thing ever. I may have squee'd several times.
