HOLD MY CURTAIN CALLS, THERE'S A NEW THEATRHYTHM: Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line

Haha, sorry, I can assure you I adore both Terra and FFVI in general, it was just that the IX and X teams have more Summon-sunchronicity in their builds and I'd played through them more recently.

...This post almost made me rethink my opinion on allowing "likes" in the forums. Chef's kiss.

I finally leveled up some characters in specific parties with them there experience eggs and hooboy, does that make it trivial. Terra is level 92ish now and other characters I'm using (Agrias, Mog, Kefka, Vincent, Cloud, Orlandeau, etc.) are catching up alright. I've started actually beating bosses instead of reaching them just as the song ends (if at all). I'm still clearing songs and figure I'll go back for quests later, when I get more powerful parties. Been using all my stat-ups on Terra and Agrias because they appear to be some of my favorite FF characters (I haven't been using them on Mog because I dunno if The Meta allows for dancers, but he seems to work OK for me at this stage.)

I realized something that made me a little sad: DLC from other games isn't in the form of series battles, where you play through a "map," they only pop up in individual stages that you just pick off of a list. Which is fine, I guess, but I was hoping for some characters and a bit more representation. I did the Romancing SaGa battle songs, i.e. the ones I recognized/had drilled into me from re;Universe, though, and that was nice.

Disappointed that they'll give the AC version of One Winged Angel it's entire goddamn runtime but they STILL cut Dancing Mad short before it even fully finishes a single loop.
I get that it's like 17 minutes long but in my dream world they have 4 stages to play, one for each movement. Make that Final Boss gauntlet seem more Final! But also if I had my 'druthers, I'druther there be like twice as much FF6 music. Or all of it. EVERY FF6 MUSIC.

At the very least, if there were more FF6 tracks then on top of the rest of Dancing Mad we really should have Aria de Mezzo Caraterre. It's just weird we have no version of that, not the original nor any of the live performances or even the recent Pixel Remaster versions.

Fun fact: CollectaCards give you bonuses. The game tells you this information, but doesn't go into details. Luckily, Reddit plays this game too much!

Summon cards give a bonus to that summon's damage, with a cap at 1.3 increase. Enemy cards give a bonus to that enemy's experience reward, with a cap at 1.2 increase. Character cards give a bonus to every stat except HP, with no cap besides the general cap of 999. One person on Reddit confirmed this by getting a couple of characters to 999s at level 1. You wouldn't want to do that, of course, because it takes a lot longer than grinding someone to 9 stars, and 9 stars will get their stats to like 600-700 anyway.

Also, I'm going to spoiler this next bit because maybe people want to figure this mechanic out on their own, but drops aren't completely random. Songs in a particular series are more likely to drop cards from that series. Which is great news, because it means you have a modicum of control over cards you're trying to target. I think this applies across sequels, so all the FF VII games bias drops for every FF VII game, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

It is weird that isn't in the game, along with anything from Honeybee Manor from the FF7 Remake. Though maybe it's for the best as the Pixel Remaster version of the FF6 opera is embarrassingly awful (imo of course).

I've been poking around that reddit, too - no one can seem to determine for sure or not whether power up items are easier to find on certain stages than others. Seems to be random as far as they can tell, which kind of sucks because I suuuuure could use some Power Plus potions lol

Yeah items seem to be the one thing you can't turn on the firehose with. You can boost drop rates but not rarity, which I don't think is such a huge deal with the boost potions (those stats will max out eventually), but sucks when it comes to scrolls, because they feel so precious that I'm scared to use them. I've thrown a couple of Hunter ones on Red XIII because he's got a permanent place in my party, but everything else I'm just hoarding. I've seen people say they've seen scrolls as rewards in Endless sometimes, so hopefully once you hit the endgame customization opens up a bit more. That feels like hours and hours away, though.

Though sifting through drops really hits my gacha-addled brain with the good feels. Opening up 10 chests at once feels more exciting than just seeing drops one monster at a time.

The Power and Magic Plus potions seem to be the rarest, too. I'm swimming in Guard and Speed Pluses, but just single digit of the ones I want. I plan on leveling every character to 99 - and I'm over halfway there at this point, the exp boosting items are PLENTIFUL (plus I have a +50% exp summonstone I got from a multiplayer match) - but I don't want to level everyone to 99 and 9 stars lol

I would temper your expectations a bit because, based on my experience and a few things I've seen from reddit, there's only a handful of abilities you can learn from scrolls in the first place. Like, you're not gonna be able to teach Celes Firaga, for example, because that is not a scroll that exists AFAIK.

Yeah, it's basically Ruin, Mystic Aura, Bravery, Provoke, Meltdown, Rare Collector, Rare Summoner, Rhythmia Plus, Drain, Steal, and Drain Blade as far as I'm aware (at least, those are the scrolls I have, other than having used all my Steal and Rare Summoner scrolls already lol).

Ah, I checked and you’re right, those are the only scrolls. At least they’re all useful abilities.

I might as well use one of each on Red XIII, then.

I decided to try to Perfect Chain every song on Expert, and I just spent nearly an hour trying to Perfect Chain the song "FFVII Special Arrangement Medley - TFBL Arrangement - From FFVII" (great name lol) and finally did it a few minutes ago. It was some of the most fun I've had playing these games, as bonkers as that sounds.

I love this series so much.

EDIT: Did it! Every song in the game, Perfect Chain. Guess I should try Ultimate now, eh...

DOUBLE EDIT: Welp, I seem to have a level 8 handicap, if the numbers next to the stages are any indication. I can beat Ultimate songs on those levels quite well, I usually get well above 9 million points. I was even able to Perfect Chain Moebius on Ultimate lol. But there's quite a gap between 8 and 9, good lord...

Goodness gracious, someone on the Reddit figured out a party that can farm a particular stage afk. I’d say turning Theatrhythm into an actual idle game is pretty dumb, but you’d need to sink a ton of time into it for the party to work at all, so I mostly just think it’s clever.

That is absolutely wild. And yeah, I have no interest in that either - I enjoy playing the game, and it's bad enough that Price of Freedom is my most played song lol (it's great for treasure chest drops, but also the quest for it was pretty difficult). Super clever, though, yeah.

So, I beat all the series quests late last night. I was stuck on the one most people get stuck on, at least according to the reddit - Feral Chaos in the final song in Dissidia. My clear was super cool, though - it felt like applying everything I'd learned about the battle system. I had Terra in front because Ultima isn't resisted by Feral Chaos (though Ultima Blade is, as I found out with my souped up Sephiroth the hard way), with people behind her boosting her magic attack (I invested several Magic Plus's into Terra as well already). When the tanky jerk popped, she offed him basically right away. The other members of the party were Sephiroth (to help do high physical damage to the mobs leading up to Feral Chaos), The Emperor for AoE magic damage, and Yuna to Grand Summon the first mob away and along with The Emperor and Sephiroth boost Terra's magic with Mystic Aura. This was not the team I used for most of the other quests! It was a mishmash of various parties I'd been messing around with to clear the other quests, and I'd not have thought of it other than being really frustrated at how hard Feral Chaos resisted nearly everything I threw at him.

The all summoner party is pretty dang useful, too - they can do a ton of AoE damage and clear out a bunch of mobs, though timing everything right for a lot of the quests with them can be difficult. I kind of wish there were more summoners besides Yuna, Garnet, Eiko, and whoever the fourth person is again(?). I get that there isn't a lot of skills left over to adjust the speed and damage summoners do, but they could have tossed in a damage multiplier for certain summon elemental damage or something, like one character would be really good at boosting Ifrit or something. Could've been cool. Oh well! I can hardly complain. The game has a lot going on in terms of party composition, and I've already had a decent time trying to get as far as I can in Endless Mode. Sure gets tough when you get into the teens of quests completed, though, I've only gotten to 18 so far, though I'm sure I could get many more, depending on my luck.

I'm pretty close to completing all the quests myself, at 90%. I've definitely learned a good bit about the battle system and what makes a good party. Magic parties are generally much better at clearing things than physical ones, in my experience, mostly because they have access to more damage multipliers AND more AOE damage. And Yuna is pretty much useful in any kind of party because of Grand Summon. My favorite comp is probably using Ace with Aphmau and Lighting #2 to give Ace an 80% reduction in spell triggers. Throwing off Ruin spells every 30 triggers or so on Ultimate is pretty strong no matter what.

I'm nowhere near done with quests, though Endless looks really fun from what I played. I'm glad one of the quest rewards is getting a life back, because I just know I'm going to eat losses from "get a high score on Ultimate" quests. It's super cool that you can back out and take as much time as you need to practice and prepare, though. I still miss Quest Medleys but indieszero did a good job giving the RPG mechanics just enough crunch in this game. I wonder where the quest difficulty tops out.

One quest that's bouncing around in the high teens is to activate 60 abilities in one song. People have done it, of course. I didn't look up how because that seems like a fun puzzle.

I can get a little over 9.2 million points on High Five on Supreme difficulty, but I don't know if I'll ever be able to hit 9.8 million for that feat/achievement. There's a bit towards the end of the song that my brain just absolutely shuts off for. Hitting four buttons at once along to a beat is not as easy as it sounds (even worse, holding three buttons and tapping a fourth). Every other song I've tried on Supreme requires EXTREMELY fast button inputs, and I just don't have the rhythm in me for that lol

I have no idea how you'd do that, @Sprite, dang. Presumably using Aphmau/Lightning #2 to reduce the heck out of trigger cost and spam low level attacks/spells? Sounds unlikely even then lol

I just looked up the arcade game and maaaaan, I would totally plop down $300 or whatever for a fancy arcade controller. Every self-respecting rhythm game should have an overpriced peripheral.
There is indeed someone making a custom controller for this game. It's one person, though, and they of course got mobbed with orders, so I imagine the chances of actually getting one are probably zilch. I also have no idea how to gauge the legitimacy of this person, but they seem legit?

They're charging $320 USD, plus exorbitant shipping, plus PayPal fees, so the total would be like $440. Which, OOOF, but that seems fair for a specialized custom build from one person.

If nothing else this proves there's a demand for this sort of thing!

I wonder how they make it compatible with the Switch/PS4. It'd be pretty cool to build my own controllers, if I could, with L and R buttons bigger than M&Ms lol

historically i would say that people used to scavenge the pcbs and cords from controllers, but after the start of the street fighter 4 era leading to a boom in people wanting to use sticks and related controllers on xbox and playstation, there's been various kinds of custom pcbs that people use as the basis for multi-console controllers. i don't know all the current options; the brooks has been a really common one but on ps4 it's frequently had issues where the console locks it out after 10-15 minutes (forcing you to plug it in again), though i'm not sure where that's at after firmware updates on both sides

I JUST finally put it together. The music on the party-editing screen is from FF Tactics, isn't it? I kept getting it stuck in my head but couldn't place it until just now. I love that though.

I'm certainly tempted to pick up the pixel remasters myself, definitely. I keep thinking I'll wait for Switch, but maybe I'll just grab them on Mobile...

I was about to say, I know it was some special set-piece BGM from VI, but didn't quite remember which. Spoony's got it.

Meanwhile I just randomly full-completed my first title while going through each one with their own characters and mostly not worrying about the harder quests 'til later - oddly FF7AC. I guess it helps that the new characters are all physical types that ramp up pretty quickly. I also rotated some previously-leveled vanilla FF7 chars into the fourth slot - two Clouds and a Sephy certainly blows up a boss real good, though I've also been putting in Yuffie a lot for the strong summon roulette.
