X Offline is definitely what has my eyebrows raised the most, but it’s also the most mysterious hole in my DQ knowledge so I have no idea what kind of expectations I should bring to the tabel

I would be fine with cute super deformed Dragon Quest X as an alternative to the MMORPG but I can't say I'm thrilled about this likely being the only way to play the game outside Japan.

It certainly didn't do it any favors that they showed this SD offline version adjacent to a pretty cool-looking expansion promo for the MMO which they were explicit about still not getting a worldwide release.

2 has some sticky parts where 3 is a much more smooth experience. But it doesn't matter, go where your heart takes you

What's Shenmue?
I remember a couple years ago when they mused that an offline, single-player version of X was the most likely way it'd get an international release, so it's nice to see that was more than idle musing. I'm of two minds about the art style, though: the SD look is cute, but it's odd they didn't just use the look of the existing game, and the new style seems like it would lessen the character customization. Still, pretty excited for it.

No idea what to think of XII yet. Calling it "for adults" gives me pause, because (as Exposition Owl said earlier) "adult" all-too-often means "adolescent". But with only a logo and a few buzzwords, I don't want to read too much into it; who can say what Horii considers a game "for adults" to be (aside from having lots of fire). We'll see.

I played DQ 1 on my phone. Should I go right to DQ3, or should I pick up 2 first?
Play II! I dumped my thoughts on it earlier in the thread.

This is where I'm at.

I absolutely believe Horii could write up an amazing Adult Dragon Quest story. There are tons and tons of instances throughout the series of "adult" themes, but getting a game where that's the majority instead of minority would be a first.

Get the feeling that DQ X Offline is going to be geared more towards kids, as a way to let them experience the game without parents having to worry about online interactions.

"For adults" seems like a translation made without consideration for the context that phrase carries for western audiences who've endured that kind of embarrassing marketing for decades. Indeed, the whole presentation seems to have treated foreign audiences as an afterthought, notwithstanding a majority of the titles being indicated as having simultaneous worldwide launches. But it's an improvement.

Yeah absolutely. I don't know what kind of implications "for adults" has with Japanese media and Japanese video games. And even then, Dragon Quest tends to have its own distinct ideas about what "for kids" even is anyway.

I'd play Dragon Quest X Offline to see what all the fuss is about, if they'll let me.

Now I'm glad I held off on buying the mobile port of DQ3 on Switch.

Also, I really hope this suggests a willingness at S-E to remake other SNES RPGs in that style because hot damn...
Wasn’t DQ3 an NES game?

I assume the idea is more about making the game for people who would have played the game as kids. DQ3 specifically is a momentous moment in the franchise, and arguably the apex of its popularity. It comes with a lot of baggage and beloved memories for JP gamers.

(1) I'm not going to read too much into "for adults" until I get a better idea of what that means, exactly. Too early to tell.

(2) I have made peace with the fact that they need to make DQ3 look like this to sell it these days and that this is how many people have been saying they want to see sprite-based games re-released, and I'd much rather they do this than what they've been doing. That being said, personally I think this just looks worse than the SFC remake. This isn't a complaint that this remake exists, and maybe I'll like it more in a more polished form instead of this initial teaser. But it's too bad they never did a wide release of basically just a rom dump of the SFC version that runs on modern machines. (DQ3 probably suffered the least of the port of a cellphone port of a pre-cellphone smartphone port era of DA releases, but the versions widely on sale now are still just degraded enough compared to the SFC game to be annoying to me.)

Wasn’t DQ3 an NES game?

Yes, but this is definitely based on redesigns and character art from the SFC remake, which became the visual template for DQ3 going forward. It is taking the SFC DQ3 remake style and converting it into an Octopath Traveler type look, rather than being a parallel reimagining and of the Famicom DQ3.

(Even though I like the SFC DQ3 look the best, I would honestly prefer if this new take used the chubbier look for the character art from the Famicom game.... These sprites look way too svelte to me, in this style.)

For comparison, this is the Famciom protagonist:

These are the SFC and beyond protagonists:

We're definitely getting the latter, here.

Oh yes I would've seriously loved for the old Famicom era art for the first few Dragon Quests to be the basis for remakes instead of the "modern" looks for the characters.

Cannock ain't been quite the same since he lost his Krillin face.

Yeah, I don't doubt that Horii could make a (for lack of a better term) "genuinely mature" game if he wanted to. I think you could even make the case that V already qualifies as one: it's a story about growing up and the loss of innocence, and specifically deals with grief, marriage and fatherhood. If Horii is interested in making a game that has a similar sort of tone (not necessarily the same themes) then I'm very interested! But again, too early to really say one way or the other.

Even setting V aside, so many of the vignettes already have a dark fairy tale vibe to them that I don't see it as a red flag, necessarily. VII is a personal favorite of mine, and it's about a fallen world that's full of stories with tragic endings.

Yeah, exactly. DQ is already pretty adult once you get past the veneer of smiling slimes.

I love the look of the re-re-remake. I always liked the sprites on stylized 3D backgrounds ever since Xenogears. More games should do this.

YES. THIS.
I only want DQB3 if they fix their stupid multiplayer system so someone can actually play the campaign with me, instead of merely visiting my personal sandbox. DQB2's mp is some of the most disappointing business ever in a game.

Hey, I see that the Dragon Quest Heroes games are on sale. How are they? Or more to the point - how are they as a single-player experience?

I absolutely love the DQ Heroes games, they're really fun action RPGs. I stress the "action RPGs" aspect, because they are far more so that than a regular Warriors game. They're sort of a middle ground between "Warriors" and "Kingdom Hearts". If you go in straight expecting pure warriors but with DQ characters you will be disappointed.

I've only played the 1st Heroes game, but in my opinion it's pretty much a Musou game with a DQ skin.
