That's not what the article is saying, tho. It's referring to the Online one not being localized. As for Offline:

"I should point out before anyone gets too forlorn that the Dragon Quest X: Offline portion of the broadcast didn’t include a similar note. It’s possible fans across the world will be able to experience the online game, sort of, by way of its single-player remake at some point. And who knows, maybe Square Enix will find it in its cold, corporate heart to revisit a localization for the real thing at some point. But I wouldn’t bet your mini medals on it."

Yeah, this. The DQX Offline segment explicitly didn't have the same note in the corner about not getting a worldwide release.

Kingdom Heart's like combat?!
I didn't say Kingdom Hearts like combat, although I probably should have clarified further, I admit. I meant more in the "exploratory style" of Kingdom Hearts, digging around levels looking for treasures and such. It's not as much about "running into a keep, turning it blue, running into another keep, turning it blue, running back to your first keep, turn it blue again, repeat, until the whole field is blue". Also, gear is more influential in your success than most Musou games.

This is probably just my own perception but...
The way SE treats DQX outside of Japan reminds me of a parent telling a child that they won't like a certain food, so they can keep it to themselves.

Does DQXI keep putting camp sites in dungeons throughout the whole game? I thought it would just be for the first couple dungeons as a kind of tutorial element, but I have a four person party now and the game is still being very generous with camps. It's definitely a pretty big shift in dungeon design to know that you'll have a free chance to heal up before a boss, because it lets you use magic and skills freely instead of conserving until the very end.

It becomes less common but never stops altogether.

I’ve had to sprint to the statues to revive someone who ate a bunch of attacks in a row or a crit a few times, so I appreciate it so far (about to get my 6th party member, I think). Got Zing recently but... you know, Zing (also they get rhe Zinger sometimes).

Is Evac no longer a thing? Does Zoom work in dungeons?

Yes, there are definitely dungeons without a save point near the boss. I got a party wipe in one (mostly due to me not taking the boss seriously enough).

Keeping on with DQIII (Switch) (from the "now playing" thread)...

First of all, I have never been an A/V person, so if there's anything amiss with the graphics or music for this version, I have no clue. It's cute and it's fine. I would only notice if you put it next to the SNES remake, probably. Maybe.

I don't remember what playing the GB version was like, but this one seems to signpost "what comes next" fairly well. Either the enemies will give you a not-so-gentle swat if you're heading in the wrong direction, or some NPC will give you a more explicit hint either during the day or at night.

Right now my party is the "basics of the basics" Warrior, Hero, Priest, Mage. I've only used one book, and the titles seem like they can change either through use of a book, or through use of seeds (Hero gets them all, the greedy girl), or through the stats that come of leveling up, which is vaguely interesting. I'm trying to avoid walkthroughs, or any other advice (this idle curiosity is simply that, and not an attempt to fish for tips about stat growth or anything else). I don't remember if DQIII has an equivalent of an Alltrades Abbey. If there isn't, with my starter party at lv 11-13, it seems like it would be too much trouble to change out characters, and I am quite comfortable with the mix of abilities that my (all girls, by my choice) party has. I enjoy Gadabouts/Goof-offs (my GB game had one instead of a Warrior!), but will leave that for the next playthrough if Alltrades ain't a thing.

I've reached the Oasis and am heading to the Pyramid soon. I remember bits and pieces of its workings from my GB playthrough, such as
every tile being a spiked tile if you get the super-powerful claws (iirc?) from the Pyramid, and you can't evac, so it's a combination of anxiety and grind to get out of there in one piece!

The big difference is that a lot of animations became still images, so it's not really noticeable in screen shots.

On the other hand, the differences are impossible to miss side by side, in that it's very easy to tell the difference between an animation and a still image.

edit: Oh, wait, looking at a video, they also changed most (all?) of the sprites relative to the last time I saw what was going on with this port (maybe the iPhone release?). Huh. So they both went from animated to still, and they are also all redrawn so it is now noticeable even in a screenshot comparison. Not terrible redraws though, as far as these things go.

New Port (doesn't move, but redrawn):

I would take the old animated version over the new version still image, personally, but it seems more on the level of personal preference relative to when it was just the same art but no longer animated.

I get that it would be a big undertaking but I'm disappointed that the Switch "remasters" of the phone ports of the Erdrick Trilogy didn't touch the backgrounds.

With all three games you have the juxtaposition of the obviously new sprite assets on the pixelly old SNES era backgrounds, but it especially hurts the first two visually 'cuz they still have the whole weird out-of-scale thing going on where the Super Famicom maps are stretched out weird to try and fit the larger DQ3 scale sprites the old phone ports implemented...and still fail to do that 'cuz you still have things like people bigger than doors.

Well, okay, I'm pretty sure I can tell the difference between an animated sprite image and a static, higher resolution one. Hehe. Interesting, thanks!

Double postin' time! Just finished the Pyramid. It's kind of amazing how much I remembered from that TT FC playthrough.

First of all, somewhat belatedly, I remembered that the whole dungeon has an anti-magic field, rendering my Mage in particular worse than useless. The Priest had an AoE weapon from somewhere so she got to come, and Mage got temporarily benched in favor of a Martial Artist, who it didn't take too long to get to a level of HP that she could live through a single "desperate attack" from one of the Pyramid's tougher enemies. I bought something like 40 medicinal herbs, and off we went.

We got a bunch of goodies from the Pyramid, including the gold claw, which MA equipped right away. (I remembered that long corridor that we had to slog through to get out, too!) Lost a couple people to canniboxes early on, but on the whole it wasn't too bad. Now on to get the ship. Yay...

Oh and I guess I can mention that the backgrounds in battles are in a higher resolution, similar to the enemy graphics.

Yeah, I was specifically referring to the general background tiles. It's a lot easier to update the battle backgrounds.

On to orb quest in DQIII, I guess! I found one more or less lying on the ground, and have found where I'm supposed to take them, and leads on a couple more. I should probably be taking notes because I'm finding a lot of new places/hints that there is no way I'll remember all of it.

At the point where the old man is a non-party guest character, Dragon Quest 11 seems to have the most "played totally straight puff-puffs" of any game in this series.

DQ3, continued:

Got Ortega's helm, quite literally by talking to a couple of people. And then Orochi soundly kicked my party's butt and we had our first wipe. Where's my Allheal? Where's my Insulatle? (sob) We can easily weather out its physical attacks with applications of Kabuff, but two all-party fire breaths per round, two times in a row, and we were, uh, toast. Looks like we'll have to come back to that later. We also got a scroll that (by my understanding through talking to a NPC) will unlock Sage for us, but I haven't figured out where to use it yet. I'm sure that somebody out there will be looking for it. (That "somebody" isn't the abbot [?] at Alltrades. I tried.)

I'm enjoying this open world stuff more than expected, but it seems to be going incredibly slowly. I have a feeling I'll have amassed enough money to buy the best gear available before I make any progress. But I will continue to be stubborn and not use a walkthrough!.. for now.

Yeah, the boss fights in Dragon Quest III can be pretty nasty once you're battling folks other than Robbin' 'Ood (née Kandar). Multiple attacks per round and party-wide damage are reasons for that.

Yep. There are bosses like that in every DQ I've played so far. It was just a matter of time!
