Aside from the fact that you've got some kind of support character I wonder what's going to be different in Spla3n

Has anyone seen an article or post or whatever that talks about who is credited for writing/scenario for the Triangle Strategy game? (There's a demo out today so maybe it says in the credits there... Hmm...)

I'm not sure of the writing credits for Project Triangle Strategy either, but I sure took it as a warning sign that among the four leads there was only one woman, and the descriptive blurb just defined her as someone's betrothed. I'm expecting Octopath frustrations all over again.

Highlights for me are SaGa Frontier in April, Legend of Mana HD, Project Triangle Strategy. Stylistically I like what they did with the Famicom Detective games, but having played the SNES version of the second one I'm not sure it's something I'd pay a lot of money for.

These directs for me always highlight the purgatory of being an adult Nintendo fan.

On the plus side, you get to hold onto the hopes and dreams of AAA Nintendo games with pure gameplay, free from Sony/Microsoft standard dialogue wheels, melee execution buttons, gory headshots, blood spatters, and shocking edgy cutscene plot twists.

On the downside, literally 75% of the games in the Directs have no appeal whatsoever, and you have to wait 40 forever for your AAA Nintendo games to get released.

Yeah, there was nothing in this Direct that I cared about. Then again, I also had no expectations, so I can't be too disappointed. At this point, I just want them to tell me about two things: Metroid and Silksong.

I wouldn’t expect BotW2 until three months before release at this point.

And wrt Skyward Sword’s button control scheme: I mentioned in discord but I expect that we will be using tilt controls in tandem with the control stick for all of the different possibilities.

Eg:
  • Tilt controller forward and press Up on the control stick for uppercut
  • Tilt controller backward and press Up on control stick for forward stab
  • Tilt right and press Right for right-to-left swing
  • Tilt left and press Right for left-to-right swing

The Switch has incredibly sophisticated motion controls, and both BoTW and Mario Galaxy Switch showed how subtle and imperceptible movements need to be to register accurately.

I’m really excited for this.

I have no damn idea how they've managed to map Skyward Sword's sword controls to a single stick. The math just doesn't add up. Maybe if they combined it with other inputs, like tilting as Gaer suggests, but that just sounds to me as bad as everybody else wrongly claims the motion controls were.

But, hell, they're way better designers than I am, and accessibility is good, so it'll probably be fine?

I'm usually the least bit enthused for Zelda in general but Skyward Sword is an exceptional favourite for me and I'm really glad it's getting another go of it, with additional design consideration allowed in how to play it. The more control configurations available the better.

I popped big for Legend of Mana and Famicom Detective Club on the old game front too. Who would've thought that these days we live in would be some of the brightest for both SaGa and Mana as continued series? More and more things from Square's back catalogue seem realistically in reach for a reintroduction as they hone their remastering practices.

Yeah, I didn’t see anything that I wanted to pick up. And, Pyra in Smash is not for me either. I’m just not the target audience for this stuff, and that’s ok. I know a lot of other folks are excited and I’m happy for them.

Yes, three of my predictions from the 2021 Predictions thread have come true:
1. Spring release for the SaGa Frontier remaster
2. More remastered Square Enix classics
3. Octopath Traveler Tactics, or Triangle Strategy.
I thought it was a pretty great Direct and I'm really excited about Splatoon 3 and its Mad Max world.

Tilting a controller and pressing a direction on a control stick requires less precision and definitely less make-my-brain-twist-itself-into-a-pretzel by trying to use the wiimote in my left hand with animations being entirely wrong and unintuitive or trying to swing my right hand around.

I’m glad that the game worked for you before and you can still play the game that way (and probably even a better experience).

But considering how flawless BotW aiming worked with motion controls plus control stick, and how precise the Mario Galaxy pointer was on switch, this is going to be really good.

Kazin

did i do all of that?
(he/him)
My main issue with Skyward Sword was those fucking controls, so it's cool to not have to use them. Will be interesting to see whether I like the game at the point, because I fucking hated it on Wii.

Other stuff sounds neat, too.

There was a lot less Animal Crossing news than I was hoping for from a Direct the month before New Horizons' first birthday (No Welcome Amiibo reprint/No Amiibos for the new folks yet), but I was still excited to see that the Mario swag has Thwomps, floating blocks, and functional warp pipes this time around. That's gonna make for some fun island design times and Dream Addresses to visit.

Gonna be a pain in the ass getting all that stuff in a timely manner with the "5 orders a day" limit, though. Might be asking others to help me out there.

Oh definitely. Just because I'm not interested doesn't mean anything was bad, it just wasn't for me. Most other folks in this thread are excited about stuff and that's great!

Miitopia escaping 3DS island is pretty cool. As someone who got sucked back into Tomodachi Life there for a bit last year (stuck social distancing? Why not simulate seeing your friends in Mii form? 😐), the ability to import Miis from one game to the other got my attention. By the time I got around to playing the demo for it, finding a reasonably priced physical copy of the dang thing was not as easy as I had hoped. I wonder if there will be a way to transfer save data between 3DS and Switch.

I was into about 85% of that Direct. Splatoon 3!!!! Famicom Detective Club!!!!! Legend of Mana!!!!! That Triangle Strategy Square-Enix gooblygook!!!!! Pyra and Mythra adding more women to the Smash Ultimate roster (with less sexualized designs)!!!!! Mario Golf!!!!!!! SaGa Frontier's date!!!!!! Outer Wilds!!!!!!! Capcom Arcade Stadium is out today (and on my Switch)!!!!!! Neon White looking really fascinating!!!!!!! The Mario stuff in Animal Crossing is through the kiosk so it'll not be something drip feeding out!!!!!

Super good event. I MISSED THESE SO MUCH

Finally admitted Skyward Sword didn't need motion controls. Finally.

To anyone who's argued that point in the past, not only am I with you, but if you've played along with me before you know I already proved this the case. I've beaten SS twice now using strictly a gamepad and didn't feel hamstrung at all.

Blown away that a pair of Renpy games got featured but these are strange times we live in.

Curious why the legend of Mana and Saga Frontier remasters seem to look so much better than the PS1 Final Fantasy remasters, which I assume use very similar technology.

I really hope that Triangle Tactics or whatever it’s called learns from the weaknesses of Octopath.

If you’re going to try to tell a character-based story with lots of dialogue in a pixel art game, you need to have character portraits along with the dialog boxes. Otherwise it feels empty and lacking.

FF Tactics, Grandia, etc. had portraits. I feel like this lesson was learned in the PS1 generation.
