Curious if al la carte cloud titles are going to become more of a thing on the Switch in the future. Also, what cloud tech are Hitman and Control using under the hood?

Looks like it’s the same company putting out cloud Switch titles in Japan (Ubitus) just expanding to international markets. To be fair, Control worked really well for me when I tried it last night. I want to say there was less input lag than in the PS Now version I played a few months back (and it definitely looks a lot better thanks to it being a variant of the PC version under the hood). I’m not spending $40 buck for a cloud game, but if it ever dipped down to around the $10 range during a sale, maybe?

Looks like there may be more announcements from them in the not too distant future.

This is up now! I went ahead and got it because I was already getting someone's Xmas gift from the store and I want that Mario Kart Live eventually anyway.
Sweet! Thanks for the tip.

Kind of weird that they advertised it as a print-out kit, but when it came out it's an actual physical reward. Here's hoping it'll be easy to scan and replace, as the originals will almost certainly be destroyed by the karts.

Did I miss a thread or mass of posts of people freaking out about the OG Famicom Fire Emblem coming out in English? Holy moley

My Paper Mario Origami set arrived from MyNintendo, in a hilariously too-big box:

However, while I thought this was same thing as the promotional Origami King set sent out to various outlets prior to the game's release, that's not what it is. It's just a collection of Paper Mario-themed origami paper with no special patterns or instructions. Ah well!

I was very excited for MSR in the run up to its release, but I gradually began despising it the more I played. While I doubt there's any truth to that mockup, I do wonder if a port created by My Uncle Who Works At Nintendo would solve the issues I had with it.

Speaking as someone who loved SR, I'd have loved a do-over that gave it a quick once-over, or better yet, did something more with the teases to Fusion

Anyone else get an unsolicited Nintendo holiday calendar in the mail? It's mostly an ad for current and upcoming games, but hey, free 2021 calendar.

Wonder if I got this due to redeeming those Club Nintendo points on the origami paper?

I got one of these in the mail today, but I fired it straight into the recycling bin. It didn't even make it into the house.

Also, I have never redeemed a Club Nintendo point, so it's not that.

So raising flame shield here, but I have like zero sympathy for #SaveSmash. Yes, it’s such a grave injustice that Nintendo doesn’t want to tacitly endorse piracy by allowing the competitive tournament scene to use an online enabled emulator so they can continue to refuse to let a nearly 20 year old game die a graceful death. Yes, yes, you don’t have to use a pirated copy of a Melee to use Slippi. You also don’t have to diddle children, but several people in the competitive Smash community missed that memo (why yes, I am still salty over all the child abuse allegations).

No company on the planet is going to endorse the undermining of their IP, yes. I guess I'm not surprised that the Smash community seems to have its collective head buried in the sand again.

I will never get tired of this article.

but the nearly-20-year-old game is good tho

Really, my issue is that Nintendo didn't really have anything to lose from turning a blind eye towards Slippi. A few thousand nerds playing an old game (most of whom have bought the new game anyway) are not going to change the fact that Smash Ultimate is literally the best selling fighting game of all time.

Don't form parasocial relationships with brands, no matter how much you like the product.

Odd thing is, there was an online Melee tournament over the weekend different from this event. So why forbid one but not the other?

I would guess that the other has some kind of middleman service that allows for netplay without modding the game code or requiring emulation/piracy.

My guess is that Nintendo is really inconsistent about enforcement of these kinds of things.

Like, this is the company that C&D'd AM2R, but has done literally nothing to stop its distribution or the past 4 years of fan updates to it.

Did Nintendo sponsor that tournament? From what I read, in the past they’ve been closely involved with the one they C&Ded.

It's probably wrong to try and psychoanalyze companies based on their actions, but it seems like Nintendo generally C&Ds things when they fit one of two criteria:

1) A bad actor is actively making money from pirating their IP.

or

2) The project gets such widespread attention that they can't make a reasonable case for not knowing about it and have to respond legally or risk losing their claim on the IP through inaction. Which CAN happen!

I personally think Nintendo is extremely lenient in turning a blind eye to all kinds of fan community stuff, as long as it stays relatively under the radar. In this case, my guess is that tournament bubbled up a bit too much and checked the box for #2.

AM2R and Pokémon Uranium (?) did see release really close to their respective Nintendo counterparts.

I'll never understand Sega's reaction to Streets of Rage Remake, particularly with how they've handled Sonic fangames since.

Yeah, as much as we try to divine a firm policy on fan projects out of Nintendo, it’s likely just the whims of individual lawyers separately looking into different issues.

Heh, my first reaction to the above was "why would you even need a spoofed online server connection just to play Melee?" before I realized a moment later "Oh, right, COVID". Welp. I guess they can have their Melee tournaments again after the vaccine is settled in.

I felt weird about it since Jump Street, because they did that, iirc, the same week that Capcom released on their website, for free, the fan-made Street Fighter x Mega Man game.

I think they'd just released an iOS version of Streets of Rage, but it wasn't going to be cannibalised by that, surely?

I feel bad that they need to release a special demo to entice people half a year after releasing the game itself. Do your best, The Wonderful 101!
