What do you mean 'What is Wowie and/or Zowie'? Don't you remember the popular catchphrase Mario and Friends all the time always say? You call yourself a fan!

Anyway, this is coming out Oct and Nintendo just did a Direct with a bunch of new info.

Doesn't seem to be an official cut-down version yet so this is what you get! Starts at about 30 min. EDIT: Looks like they cut down the video, I don't even need to link to a different one. Nifty!

So anyway! New 2D Mario! New non-NSMB art style! Daisy is playable! Elephant power-up! Deviant Artists salivating! Fun times all around!

Also the original preview vid from two months ago for posterity:

  • I love the elephant and bubble suits
  • I hate the talking flowers! I wonder if you can turn off the voice.
  • I hope the game respawns you in the level instead of kicking you to the world map after dying. This pretty much ruined New SMB U for me...having to wait through two loading screens.

A few additional impressions from me.
  • The part of the World 1 map we got to see in the Direct suggests a ton of content in the game across main courses and mini courses.
  • The badge system is interesting, though I am curious how much getting all the collectibles will be dependent on equipping the right badge for the stage. I'm gonna take the Crouching High Jump badge as a reference to SMB2 (US) for the personal nostalgia factor.
  • The implementation of online multi-player is interesting as an optional interaction point. I suspect that I'll be too distracted seeing other player ghosts running around on my screen, especially when lag becomes a factor, to keep it turned on. But I'm willing to see how it feels first before writing it off.

It did look like all the non-platforming stuff was faster than in NSMBU, which is very important.

I hope that it doesn't give me some sort of sparkly acknowledgment for beating a level without the use of a badge, in order to encourage the use of badges. They look really fun.

The online multiplayer features mean that Mario is now Souls.

*record scratch* Yep, that's me. You're probably wondering how I ended up here...

I feel like this is implying that Mario shouldn't add any new... hmm, "catchphrases" feels a bit grandiose. ...any new sound bytes going forward. I thought getting away from stagnation was part of the appeal here?

Nah, that's not what I mean at all. I welcome new catchphrases honestly. But after so long using the same sort of verbiage to hear them all Wowie-Zowie-ing left and right was a bit jarring.

I don't think I'll watch the Treehouse video. I watched the 12 minute direct, and I'm completely sold on it, so now I just want to be surprised! Really looking forward to this.

There's a lot to love here. I think my new favorite critter so far is the Skedaddler.

I love his little panicked expression when he runs away, all HEAVENS TO MURGATROYD.

The Skedaddler is basically a Birdo that flees from you, but dang if the little rascal doesn't have a lot of personality.

Digital version is out. Made it through the first world before calling it a night. This shit is absolutely fantastic in all the big ways they advertised, but I also wanted to point out the little, practical things: collectibles seem a lot less compulsive than star coins and green stars, and, as we suspected/hoped, there's no reward for not using a badge, so it really is a matter of preference.

It would sound to my ear that different characters and their forms have different jump sound effects. This pleases me.

I've also had a few successful online interactions, including mutually reciprocated death save, showing other players how to activate stage secrets, and seeing other players activate stage secrets in turn. Color me surprised at how well it's been working, I actually found myself slowing down or wanting to go faster to keep pace with other players while playing. It's very easy to just go do your own thing without it feeling bad, but there's just something kind of warm and good about coincidentally interacting with other people in a positive way.

I don't really like it much so far as it seems to be lacking in secrets/hidden paths in a way NSMB absolutely wasn't, but a) I'm 10 levels in and b) I've probably just missed all of them.

Kinda sucks that it's repeating Wonder Flower gimmicks already, though.

Almost the instant I posted that I found a level with a 10-coin thingy that I cannot for the life of me find, so I'm in.

Yeah this is a 10. Holy shit. That slow, safe opening puts you into a false sense of security, then once the rules start breaking they start breaking fast. Absolutely brilliant.

One thing that didn’t quite bug me but was still a change was the player characters don’t bump into each other, like in NSMB. There’s no bouncing off people’s heads, which also means no getting knocked into a pit on accident/purpose.

Playing with just two characters, it felt a little more zoomed in than NSMB. Will try a full 4 player run when the kids get home, see how chaotic it will be.

The online connectivity just added a bunch of nonsense to the game, so that’s being turned off always here. I can see playing remote with friends being fun, but that’s not something we do here.

Didn’t get far, but one of the very early levels has 3 wonder seeds, and we played it four times to try to find the first one. No luck yet, but we weren’t sick of the level even after that many runs, so that’s a sign of quality in itself.

If you want a hint about that one: there are two exits. If you want a bigger hint: skip the Wonder Flower. Unless it's a different level than I'm thinking.

I would be very grateful if anyone could give me a slight nudge toward the location of the secret exit in Piranha Plants on Parade

because I am stumped.

Just a hint would be great. A small one.

I'm only up to the first castle, but this is just lovely so far. After the New games, it's an amazing feeling to have multiple biomes in the same world, and just generally not having an idea of what's going to happen next in any given level.
