Feeling like an idiot for only just now picking up on the fact that the evolved Garlic is a Suikoden reference. I picked up on the Vandal Hearts reference right away (since it's one of my favourite games of all time), but I wonder what other Konami refs I might be missing.

New stage and character and weapon, yet again. I definitely think Curse is a stealth buff; sure it's harder and requires more permanent upgrades, but right now I'm 10 minutes into a run and have 3 level 8 weapons and 1 level 7. I'm level 45, without a Crown. That's nuts!

Edit: less than 12 minutes now, and have fully upgraded (not evolved though) weapons. This is bonkers

Edit edit: Okay I lied. I unlocked the new stage, and you have to play it on Normal first, and playing NORMAL with Curse is pretty rough. Hyper is manageable since you can get away, but Normal...oof. It's rough

It took me four tries to get a clear run on the new stage. Leveling up is wicked slow there - I basically only got my last evolutions in the final three minutes (shit, that reminds me I forgot to take a screenshot) at level 67. The EXP gain feels really slow, I think because more of the monsters have higher hp and there are less weak-fodder groups? And/or all the movement in distant directions? I couldn't get mortaccio or the panda up to level 20 even, they didn't last long enough, nor did the lightning-ring-area-boy live particularly long. In the end, I went back to Gennaro and he got me through. Ended up with La Borra, thunder loop, 1000 daggers, satanic verses, plus a lone peachone (blegh) and crosses, and was barely holding off the final crush still. Harder to focus on a certain build when you're leveling slower and pressure is way higher. I'll have to try hyper next (probably won't take so damn long to move between power-ups, either).

Haven't tried the new character or new weapon. What's the evolution item for it?

The new weapon's evolution item is the Skullomania item. The one that adds more Curse.

Yeah, the new stage was much harder, the only way I made it the full thirty was evolved Garlic and Bible. But I managed to unlock the new character so now I'm never going back there again.

The evolution hits in an AoE around the character, it shoots out a few circles that slow and damage enemies. It's good with Spellbinder and the Tome so you can have multiple out at once!

For comparison, the base weapon shoots out in a column that hits above and below the player for most of the screen, if not past the edges. As you improve it, it stretches past the player to the left and right. The new character improves duration with no cap, so it works so good with her as it becomes a permanent wall of death.

I got the map last night, but then it was bedtime. Planning to unlock the new character, etc, tonight.

The snuck in a nerf to the new stage last night (increased early XP) and I'm disappointed.

I dunno, increased early XP seems like a big help without making a huge dent in the overall difficulty. It just helps you get off the ground. I wonder if I should try the lightning-spam trick again...

Anyway, I attempted stage 3 and cleared Stage 1 with the new character. With the song of mana weapon evolved, plus la borra, bones(!!!), runetracers, a lone peachone (goddammit) and Bibles, I was having some Long-duration fun, especially with increased area (but wasn't able to snag speed).

What do you guys think of the new map & items system? I think I like it - if you want, it gives you a goal to move towards so you have progress you're trying to make instead of just circling a random point or going in one direction for as long as you can. And the reward for doing so is pretty significant, since an extra item (or multiple extra items!) is a pretty big deal. (I did notice, however, that since the last patch at the latest you can't get higher levels than 5 on items anymore, regardless of how many more you pick up at max level. Sadface! Also I dunno why he dropped that, the number you can get is limited anyway!) But also the distance is such that you really have to book it if you want to get more than 1-2. In the forest, I went NW for the...something, South for the clovers, back east for the pummarello and up to the hollow heart, and I only made it to the hollow heart at like 28 minutes in, and that was with a concerted, slightly risky effort to keep moving.

I wish we'd get a few more evolutions of base stuff. Still waiting on a runetracer evolution - I love my tracers. Bones (and cherry bombs) could use the love too! Might also find new ways to evolve stuff, like w/ vandalier, instead of just trying to find a sub-item to pair it with. Also, I realized that the Laurel should have an evolution with the armor.

Got to 29:59 on the clock on my first stage 3 attempt. Demoralizing enough for me to stop playing this for a bit. Fully evolved axe and water were not enough to handle those final waves, and didn't notice until halfway through the stage that the pentagram is something that can be leveled up now.

I suppose I appreciate the stage's Diablo reference.

I did stage 3 on my first serious try (as opposed to run directly to the map to get it, not worrying about leveling, etc). But haven't had any luck unlocking the new character yet (which is probably because I've been playing Infernax and the new Risk of Rain 2 DLC).

This evolved pentagram is a good reward for using unevolved pentagram.

New "bonus" stage is kinda boring, though. More of a playground for experimentation, I think, which I guess is fine.

Evolved Feet Guns are absolutely BANANAS. They're evolved the same way as Pride Bird, but you don't have to evolve them again after they merge, and they're just... a wheel of deathlasers that never stop. Cleared Mad Green Acres without breaking a sweat.

I haven't been playing regularly but I popped my head back in and they've continued adding plenty of stuff.

There's a new stage. This one is similar to library in that it's a bounded corridor but it's up-down instead of left-right. It also has a lot of traps like the 3rd stage. Also, Runetracer finally got an evolution (it does an explosion when it bounces).

There are also tarot cards. You unlock them with achievements, and you can pick one at the start of a map. A treasure chest might also pop in and give you another one. So far they're pretty powerful: One card increases all healing (including your regen) by double, and damages enemies for the amount you heal when you do.
One of them adds a single bounce to crosses, magic wand and fire wand. For crosses, evolved and otherwise, this means they fly normally but also bounce back from the edge of the screen once before flying off the next edge they hit. Hellfire works the same way. Magic Wand and pre-evolved fire wand have the chance to hit an enemy and instead of disappearing they bounce off and can hit another. It's a pretty rad upgrade for three of the most basic weapons, which is neat as most of them have been kinda overshadowed by various new hotnesses. Apparently other cards do similar.
But there's also one where your duration gets a random multiplier between +200% and -50%. So stuff may suddenly start lasting forever, but then it might last for a really short time at points. On average, it's a pretty big buff to duration, but on duration-heavy builds (La Borra, Pride Birds, Runetracers, cats, bones...) I could see one bad roll leading to disaster.

One of the new weapons is cats. You have some cats running around the screen. Occasionally they attack the area they're in, and occasionally they get into a cartoon fight (dust cloud with arms and legs and such appearing and disappearing) that leaves an AoE on the spot for a while. And occasionally they attack you too. As a weapon, that actually scales with luck because it increases the chances of the cats' attacking and their making the fight cloud AoE, and decreases the chances that they attack you. They can also pick up consumables - if a cat grabs floor chicken it permanently increases the damage and attack chances of all cats. If one eats the NFT, it explodes.

Another new character is a dog that farts flowers.

I wanted to leave it there for the joke, but the weapon (it's called Celestial Dust) is actually kinda cool in concept. It only fires when the player is moving, and it shoots flowers out directly behind the player. They can stick around longer with the duration upgrades, etc. I think this is the first weapon that doesn't let you just stand still and go get a drink while your character slaughters the last 5 minutes of a level. Which is...neat? I have to do more testing to see how powerful it actually is, but it's definitely a new concept when it seems those would start becoming harder to come by.

I managed to get Okami situated in such a way on a piano stool that death could not claim her at the 30 minute mark and I finally understood what people meant when they say "God is just Dog spelled backwards"

...but then at the 31 minute mark the game spawns a second death to ensure you die for real. Anyway!

Sailor Earth and the Witch are both kind of bad. Even with the evolution the Pentagram is a flop, and the Cats... well, as much as I want to love the concept of a weapon that amounts to "Summons Cat" the fact that they eat experience crystals is annoying.

The Rocker Demon's weapon is a bit difficult to get used to. She drops mines behind her when you move, but when she stops the mines fire off in the direction she's currently facing.

I don't know when it was added but the new Hurry Mode doubles the timer speed so a complete run is only 15 minutes instead of 30. It's a godsend (dogsend??), but it does make doing all the stage objectives a bit difficult.

I've only unlocked a handful of Arcana but man the "You get three free revives and every time you use one you get a boost to almost all your stats" gets nasty.

I saw a run where someone had 10 Deaths. Dunno what the record is.

I don't really like it. It's not bad, but it's more work than literally every other weapon. ...but that character gets +1% area per level, so their weapons become INSANE. It's a trade off

Her weapon and the dog's flower farts are in the new category of "you actually have to play the game" instead of every other weapon so far which is just as effective, if not most effective, when standing completely still. I'm not saying that's a good thing, but I definitely see where they're going with it.

I actually like the new weapon, too. I think of it as building a charge and unleashing a big attack, except strategically. Unlike most weapons, you can choose whether to use it as an AOE or focused damage. AOE obviously by describing a line then sending it parallel through the crowd, but you can also run some very tight circles around yourself to build up a lot of pinions then fire them off in a big chunk (Or run in a straight line and then fire them backwards). Especially once it's evolved, you can just delete bosses and so on that way. Not as good a focused damage source as just pouring daggers into them, but I guess that's the tradeoff for the versatility.

That said, once I'm in those latter minutes and waiting to finish, I do miss being able to just tab out and wait for the clock to run down.

Four Curse Hyper Hurry Bone Zone is, um, an experience. Hurry mode counts for the "survive 30 minutes" achievements/unlocks btw.

I started playing this finally. I wanted to try waiting until it was out of Early Access, but then I felt like playing something with extremely short play sessions.

Anyway I did 3 runs so far and this game slaps as hell. My 3rd run almost went the distance, I made 27:46 as Pasqualina in the Library. Ended up with an evolved Runetracer and Fire Wand. I want to like Antonio, but after seeing what other weapons can do at high levels, the Whip just seems lackluster. I'm sure the evolved Whip probably whips ass though. But now I've unlocked 4 more characters so... probably not going back to him for a bit.

The best advice I got in this thread when I was starting out was to forego Whip Guy for now, and start with Knife Guy instead. (I will never remember their names, sorry.) It was the difference between passively waiting for the whip to attack and being able to actively be aggressive that really helped the game click for me.

I've also come back to this game in the past week or so and have been having a blast with it now that I've unlocked just about everything. I had one run that went to about 81 minutes, but I started getting bored and made the effort to let the character die. I was hoping there'd be an achievement or something for getting past an hour, but no dice.

I made it to 29:16 for my best run so far. I reached the point where I couldn't even parse what was happening anymore, and then I got swarmed by golem things that didn't die quick enough. I think I had 5 evolved weapons that time. Evolved Knife kind of kicks ass somehow despite being so straightforward. I also got the map and opened the coffin in the Dairy Plant.

I finally got past that fucking weird-ass level with the floating tunnel and the Biblically Accurate Angel boss, and have been messing around with the fifth stage and the new evolutions. The evolved laurel makes you Actually Invincible, when all is said and done; I let the clock run to an hour or so before I got bored because I hadn't managed to kill a Death yet. I need to come back and evolve both the laurel and the clock lancet. But god, the blue death with the rising water in that stage is a real pain in the ass.

The first one of these is how I made it up past 81 minutes. The combo of both that you mention is how I killed a Death for the first time.
