Johnny Unusual
(He/Him)
Via wikipedia...I'm curious if this is actually true, though. I thought the games predated the show. Bulbapedia is silent on the subject but does helpfully mention that "Gigantamax Meowth may be based on the long-cat meme."
However, and weirdly, the citation link DOES NOT VERIFY THIS FACT!Called "Nyarth" in Japanese, Nintendo decided to give the various Pokémon species "clever and descriptive names" related to their appearance or features when translating the game for western audiences as a means to make the characters more relatable to American children.[10] Due to its appearance in the anime series as a speaking character, the species was renamed Meowth, a combination of the words "meow" and "mouth".[7]
Nyarth makes me think...
EDIT: It really isn't 100% clear. The Japanese name is a combo of Nya and Wealth. It's arguable that's a similar intent with Meowth. But compared to "meow" and "mouth", meow/wealth is much much clunkier.
The anime debuted in English in September 8, 1998. The game was released in North America in September 28, 1998.I thought the games predated the show
