The Retrogame Bubble Thread - "that's worth HOW MUCH now?!"

Heritage responded:
“Heritage Auctions wishes it had been given the opportunity to respond before the video’s publication, because there are numerous misstatements of fact and inaccurate conclusions contained within the piece,” a spokesperson told VGC.

“Heritage strongly refutes any allegation that it or its officers are involved in shill bidding, “market manipulation” or any similarly illegal or unethical practices. Heritage prides itself on our transparency and being a place built by and for collectors. With this in mind, we welcome the opportunity to discuss the video-game marketplace further, and would invite Mr. Jobst to our world headquarters in Dallas to tour our operations and speak further with leadership.”

Dude would probably end up in a sealed plastic box, too. "Whistleblower: Non-functional condition. Price: $2 million."

Continuing off my thought from earlier... It’ll be interesting to see how collectors navigate PC games post-Vista. That’s about the era where online activation really kicked in. Games With Windows and all that. What do you do when the physical copy of Civ IV you’ve tracked down needs to talk to a long dead server to even get past install? Or the one use product key inside the box’s been long past registered to an account. (Hope someone’s got a work around I guess.)

So if you’ve got a potential whole generation of functionally uninstallable games, what does that do for the value of them? Makes it more of a preservation of the packaging issue than anything.

I mean, when people are taking perfectly good cartridge games and sealing them in plastic coffins forever, does it even matter if a game actually installs and runs?

Not to impugn the validity of the accusations against these auctioneers and such, but I feel that we could do better than link to content by a known associate of n*zis.

Wait, what?

Most I could find is that Karl Jobst follows, and recently had a positive interaction on twitter with Notch. I'm not sure if this is what RT is referring to, but there is that. Suffice it to say I was unaware of the connection myself.

Great. So now that video is one big "worst person you know made a great point."

Thanks for the heads up.

Appreciate the CW but I'm gonna advocate for hiding that behind a spoiler because eeeesh.

And thanks for the info. Was completely unaware of this. The Notch thing is just an additional slice on the shit sandwich it seems.

i didn't know this but i did realize i saw a video he did about cheating in trackmania a while ago, and after i was reminded of that fact i thought, "oh huh, he's a speedrunner then? what does he play?"

i was immediately more than a little wary when i found out it was goldeneye

goldeneye community being standalone for basically forever has probably contributed to their success in building a community of smart, dedicated, charismatic, and incredibly terrible white guys

Karl Jobst appeared on the podcast of the Gam*rgate lawyer who defended Vic Mignogna, which I figured was on brand for a Goldeneye speedrunner

Looking for images for a video I'm working on, I have just discovered that Resident Evil: Fart Edition for the DS is worth like $150 complete now.

What are good eBay alternatives these days? I looked in selling my more expensive games their, but they changed things this year to require seller to be paid via direct deposit, and I'm not sure I'd want eBay to have my routing number even if they had a good reputation for site security.

Uh, Facebook Marketplace or Amazon third-party selling? Craigslist I guess. Not a lot of great options if you want to stick to online only

You can probably also get some games slightly cheaper if you buy/sell/trade on various gaming forums. Find one that has folks with good feedback. I've snagged a few games that way. I've made the occasional purchase and trade on Racketboy.

Anyone remember Goozex? I used that site for a while and right before it went down, I sent someone a copy of Mega Man V for the Gameboy. Wish I could've sold that one instead... lol

I took a look at game collectors on Youtube for a little bit today, and I saw two trends: first was people making vids saying "why I am quitting retro game collecting."
The second trend now is to buy everything you can get your hands on and flip the games you don't want, and use that money to support your habit. Which is just going to raise the prices of everything even more. And they keep mentioning an app to sell your games with, starts with a "Wh" (I can specify, but I also don't want to attract people by saying it out loud).

This is becoming so nuts, I hope I'm wrong. It's like right now the slabbed games are the least of game collecting worries.

I 5000% remember Goozex. I got a couple of games for free by getting rewards for signing up friends and *ahem* "friends" who were definitely real people for real you guys.

Whatever that site is, I'm unfamiliar with it and am curious to look lol. If you don't want to post it here, feel free to DM me. (and no, whatever it is, I don't plan to sell anything on it - I'm used to eBay and comfortable with eBay, so I'll keep my stuff there. Plus at this point I've pretty much sold everything I want to sell)

That site died with me having had a bunch of points on it I didn't get the chance to spend. I was eyeing a copy of Mega Man Legends, too, and then it went down. Oh well

Things are pretty bad! And they’ve only gotten worse, even just since this thread started. I’m almost done with my Neo Geo Pocket Color US collection, and I definitely started at the last possible time, because plenty of games have doubled or tripled in price over the past year. There are a couple extras I was planning to get that have shot way up. I want Delta Warp :(

It’s so depressing that so much of this stuff is now only accessible through piracy. Heaven help us if anyone manages to take down the Internet Archive. That place is doing the lord’s work.

I haven't bought anything in a while, so I decided I was going to import some games. Mostly SFC stuff, but also some GB/A. I will finally have copies of Rockman World 4/5, which were significantly cheaper than trying to score Mega Man IV/V. Also got Lagrange Point, a couple of Hiryu no Ken games, and a ton of translated and untranslated SFC games like Super Genjin 2, Lady Stalker, Super Chinese World 2, and Hero Senki: Project Olympus. 27 games in all, for under $150 shipped, so I can't complain!

Oh, and the first two Starfy GBA games! Still gotta snag the third at some point.

So I take it the retro gaming bubble hasn't reached Japan yet? Either that or it hasn't affected it quite as much.

I probably should look into getting some more Japanese PSP exclusives, while they're still available for reasonable prices. I've got the JPN Yakuza spin-off, and wouldn't mind trying the sequel.
