The Retrogame Bubble Thread - "that's worth HOW MUCH now?!"

Kazin

did i do all of that?
(he/him)
It hasn't seemed to affect Japan quite as much, no, at least in terms of hardware, which is all I really get from overseas (as far as I know, software is still reasonable, too, but I don't have any direct experience with that).

Yeah, it seems like those prices are mostly still reasonable. Now, that being said, there are still some rarer titles that sell for a pretty good amount. Something like Magical Pop'n, Fire Emblem Thracia 776, or Rendering Ranger will set you back a pretty penny.

According to PriceCharting, there is a spike, but it's lower than we're seeing with US games. Most folks aren't wanting to snag these random RPGs they can't play, and many of them are very common in Japan anyway.

So I take it the retro gaming bubble hasn't reached Japan yet? Either that or it hasn't affected it quite as much.

I probably should look into getting some more Japanese PSP exclusives, while they're still available for reasonable prices. I've got the JPN Yakuza spin-off, and wouldn't mind trying the sequel.

Is that the one AKI did? That was basically their last thing before just doing Style Savvy and that one Japan-only smartphone wrestling game?

Yeah, both games were by Syn Sophia (formerly AKI). I understand that some of the moves from Def Jam NY were used in the two games.

Don't expect much wrestling, but judging from what I played, it's a good adaptation of the Yakuza series. There's also an English translation of the sequel, which seems to have been released a week ago (and is apparently better in most respects).

Just as a lark I wanted to see what Ninja Five-O goes for these days, and I was not disappointed:

I'm still in shock over how much a cart, let alone a CIB copy, of Pokemon Red/Blue will cost you!?

Looking at eBay, it seems like $50-70 for the cart and the manual, and $300+ for the cart and the box. I'll admit, if I knew the boxes would be so valuable I would have saved them! Silly me, only keeping the manuals.

Fuckola cola. I have Ninja 5-0! It's a great game, no question, but it's not worth the price of new car. I wish Konami would stop being so damn stingy and just sell it to us in a collection for the Switch.

I wish I'd stumbled across it back in the day - I knew it was awesome because I *ahem* used a flash cart to play through it. (A flash cart that, I might add, cost more than the GBA itself. Good ol' FlashAdvance 256M Pro.)

I regret not keeping the copy I got from GameFly and saying it got lost in the mail (I did not have the option to buy it from them, but it was already getting expensive even then, back in like 2006).

If not for COVID I would be tempted to go to garage sales bright and early and try to get one of those fabled tubs full of games just so it wouldn't fall into the hands of reseller hobbyists.

I think yard sales would be much less risky than a lot of things, especially if vaccinated. My problem is that I don't want to wake up that early. We used to yard sale all the time when I was a kid.

I was a pretty regular yard seller a few years back and while I have definitely found a few of those fabled tubfulls here and there they are few and far between. I haven't been in a while but my assumption is that the competition is probably even thicker and the deals even sparser than back then. I could probably do an effort post write up of the best practices I developed if anyone is interested.

Fascinating. I wondered what the few tweets I happened to see were about. I don't know the value of PC games at all, but if they're anything like what retro console games are going for now, it's unsurprising there'd be (apparently) a bunch of fakes around.

I've been 'Big Box' PC game collecting for a decade or so and the prices when I started have certainly gone way up... I think most of the forgery stuff happens at the real high-end though.

The Taito DS paddle controller that I bought in 2018 used on eBay for $7.75 shipped is going for $140+ on eBay nowadays, without a game with it! Jfc

Yeah, I'm really upset I never pulled the trigger on one when they were new. I still have a sealed copy of Arkanoid DS because I haven't wanted to play it without one.

Twisting the topic to "that's worth how much then?":

I've been cleaning some of my office space to do some rearranging, and that included sorting/moving some boxes from my old room, which includes a bunch of old game stuff... and I came across my actual receipt for buying Chrono Trigger from Babbage's in 1995. I paid $69.99, but that was evidently a discount from their normal list price of $74.99. Converting from 1995 for 2022 dollars, that comes out to a cool $146. Good thing it was for arguably the best console RPG of all time.

Of course, complete in box sets can run you far more than that now. Though interestingly, at a quick glance is looks like you might be able to buy a bare cart and a box/manual *separately* for significantly less total, though presumably not in anywhere near mint condition.

Woof, that's a lot haha. Still, yeah, worth it. I wonder how much my mom paid for Shining Force II when it was new.

Sarge

Yeah, there's a reason I rarely got new games and got stuff from pawn shops, thrift stores, and yard sales. Expensive, expensive stuff.

I know grading is a scam, but I was still taken aback by this.

Beowife asked, "Are you sure there's actually a video game in that?" And I was reminded of my dad messing with con-goers around the time the Death of Superman came out. (If you don't remember, the "Death" issue came in a collectable black bag with an assortment of feelies, and the collectors at the time refused to open the bags because, y'know, collectable.) He started claiming that they ran out of Superman comics in the initial print run, so he had the printers stuff the bags with old issues of G.I. Combat. "Because nobody's going to open them anyway! Who's gonna know?" I remember several rooms full of comic fans who were pretty sure he was joking...but still nervous in case he wasn't.

I'm just imagining Al Pacino ripping open one of these comics with a knife and saying, "I knew it! It's G. I. Joe Combat! You cheated me!"
