The DC Comics TV & Movie Thread - A Thread for Talking about Detective Comics Comics Television Shows and Movies

New Gods always felt like a Phase 3 or 4 kind of movie you needed to ease audiences into, and always seemed like a weird choice when WB couldn’t even get their DCU past Phase 1.

I think ludicrously faithful Jack Kirby's Fourth World adaptations could be amazing as stand alone movies, but I don't see that ever happening. Not necessarily panel-for-panel faithful, but to the tone. I'm thinking like... a Wachowskis' Speed Racer style approach to Kirby's Jimmy Olsen comics, for example.

I really don't know what that New Gods movie would have been. Tom King was writing the script, he of Vision, Omega Men, Mr. Miracle, but his comics usually manage to keep the heart of characters while putting them in mostly new settings or contexts. I mean, his Mr. Miracle comic was about Scott and Barda fighting Darkseid, but it was also about learning how to be a father.

Tom King made a lot of impatient nerds very mad for a short period of time on his recent Batman run, wonder if that had any hand in this. He got Bruce to marry Catwoman eventually tho, so all's well that ends well

That's an awful quick turn around to trailer #2. I hope they keep chopping up the same 4 minutes of footage into a trailer once a week until the movie releases.

Also, via The Hollywood Reporter:
New Gods, which would have been a sprawling tale, was complicated by the fact that its villain, Darkseid, just appeared as a major foil in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and there was a desire to have space between the latter and any new appearances.

fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffuck the Snyder Cut. It wasn't worth it.

They're starting another new Batman continuity. Canon has nothing to do with it. Blame the people who canceled it for canceling it.

He wasn't even in the movie for more than an aggregated two or three minutes of screentime! This is like canceling GotG 1 because Thanos showed up in Avengers! Gah.

If WB wanted a New Gods movie they'd have made a New Gods movie, the flimsy pretext of "we just used Darkseid" would mean less than nothing to the executives if they wanted this project to go forward. Between executives and PR someone decided this excuse beat saying "nah we just don't think it's a good idea."

As much as I love the New Gods and wanted that movie to happen, the studio that can't even get Superman movie made looking at a script for a group of marginally popular characters and deciding not to commit $200 million to it might not be making a mistake.

Also, New Gods would work better as an HBO Max series.

Yeah, at best that smells like out-of-touch WB execs posturing and trying to save face for their incredibly petty in-fighting.

Meanwhile, here's a deleted scene from the Snyder Cut some of y'all might appreciate.

Gotta say, liking this season of The Flash a lot more than the last one. It retains it sense of taking the goofy stuff seriously, and making the serious stuff kind of goofy that is the shows greatest strength.

Roughly how many times has Barry had to watch his parents and/or mentor die? You’d think he’d be completely desensitized by now; it looks like it’s his moms turn again this season

I haven't been in this thread, so forgive me if this has been discussed but...

This looks... bad? Loeb and Sale did some of my very favorite Batman stories, including this one, and aside from the fact that they took every drop of character out of Tim Sale's art to make it look like their weird half-assed, not nearly as good as the actual Batman TAS house-style, it just... looks like they're centering the Joker in a weird way (he, like pretty much every other villain, was in one issue of the 12 issue arc, if I recall correctly), and making it super Zack Snyder gritty and... yeah, I'm not jazzed. The DC animated movies used to be constantly praised, and I feel like since at least Killing Joke, they've been on the slide.

Oh, hey, this was probably mentioned elsewhere (possibly even in this thread), but I just got around to watching last year's DC CW shows. Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, and The Flash are all on US Netflix. But, apparently, Batwoman is on HBO GO. Okay, fine, I can miss out on one of these shows. But then you get to Crisis on Infinite Earths, and "hour two" is Batwoman exclusive? Is that right? You've got 80% of a five-hour superhero showcase on one streaming service, but have to purchase another for Part 2 of 5? Are you serious!? Janet! Call 2001 and get Kazaa on the line right now. I have a request!

They've been bad for a lot longer than that. A handful of them might be halfway interesting here or there, but most of them are droll. At some point, DC decided that the only properties worth making these movies for were for either Batman or Superman adjacent things. And also that the target audience was adult, hardcore comic book fans. Which meant that these became really boring, really fast as they tried to do a bunch of greatest hits, but then make them needlessly edgey. They also don't have great animation in them either. They really should just stop these, and go back to making TV shows. HBO Max needs content!

*shrug* makes sense to me. WB/CW had distribution deals with Netflix for a while. But then when HBO Max came along, they decided they wanted to funnel their properties there. It's inconvenient for us, sure, but that's the future of streaming.

It's even worse on Canuck-flix, only Supergirl and Flash are on it, I went to iTunes for the three parts of Crisis I was missing.

I'd easily swap Flash for Legends if I could.

I am equally surprised and disappointed that the Legends weren’t so much as mentioned on Flash this week; the villain was a Time God who was Groundhogs Daying people!

Dealing with stuff like that is literally their entire job

Why talk about this TV show with big crossover appeal that shares the same universe, when we can talk about Sisko's summer vacation backpacking through Atlantis 5 times every episode?

To be fair, wouldn’t you mention a summer vacation to Atlantis every chance you got?

...has Atlantis ever actually shown up in any of the shows? Or does Cisco just talk about going there a lot?

It's never shown up. We've never so much as even seen an Atlantean either. Cisco went there for an episode post-Crisis for some soul searching and to also vaguely study their tech there. And when he came back, literally every other technical thing he does he's like, "WhEn I wAs In AtLaNtIs..." to describe the informational source to some new super science thing learned about doing.

Chester’s dad helping this random dude who showed up in his garage build a gadget specifically designed to thwart a time lord out of garbage he had lying around strained my suspension of disbelief just a tad.

Comic Book Science Dads have a 50/50 chance of being like that anyway.

What I had a harder time with was the flimsy justification Cisco had with coming up with names for the Forces of Nature; Speed Force and Strength Force, sure. Those make sense. “Still Force” is a bad description of Time Control Guy, but it sorta fits in a square-peg-round-hole kind of way.

“Sage Force” is terrible name for a guy who makes you scared

On the last episode of Batwoman, some baddie I don't recognize was moustache twirling over a completely fucked Kate Kane and patting himself on the back for his ingeniously evil plan to brainwash her and turn her into a mindless minion or something. And uh, I think that's my cue to adjust to full-on hate watching this show. What a terrible piece of shit show.
