The DC Comics TV & Movie Thread - A Thread for Talking about Detective Comics Comics Television Shows and Movies

I just wanna know who their audience is that they think they're playing this kinda stuff for because I can't imagine anyone is actually invested in will-they-won't-they that can be counted in decades, not just years. In short:
The problem is that writers/editors love to milk the same character dynamics long past the point where it would be reasonable for them to naturally change.

I've heard the justification that comics are written to be enjoyed by a constantly replenishing audience of young readers that age out of the hobby and make way for the next generation, though that has been obviously untrue for a long time

The wild thing to me about this, is stuff like Wayne Family Adventures and My Adventures With Superman are a hit with the kiddos, probably in no small part because they completely bypass, or at least severely abbreviate the will-they-won't-they bullshit for good vibes and smart characters. Weird the comic writers haven't picked up on this trend, or are staunchly resisting it if new/young audiences really are their target.

I feel like the answer is a lot simpler than that; different writers are called in to write characters all the time, and not only is it easier to keep track of if you keep a holding pattern on relationships, but one might have an good idea for a story that wouldn’t work otherwise.

I don't know, I think it's kind of a writer's job to know the history of the comic and come up with stories that work for whatever's going on with them at the time they come on board.

I know they're probably gonna go "ACTUALLY THE SPACEMONSTERS THAT INVADED WERE ON A DIFFERENT SPACE TEAM THAN SUPERMAN'S DAD" but I'd be cool if they didn't.

Making this version of superman a Goku* would be perfect final anime touch to this anime-as-hell show.

*AS IN A SPACE BABY THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BLOW UP THE EARTH, BUT DIDN'T DO THAT BECAUSE THEY WERE A BABY AND BABIES ARE NOTABLY TERRIBLE AT DOING WHAT THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO DO.

I like how they got out of that without revealing that the General is Lois's Dad. Unless I missed it. Also, is that actually a spoiler?

I figured that the invaders were probably general Zod and company.

Question: is this Superman easier to beat up than normal? He seems to get beat up a lot and actually gets hurt in the process. I know he's still finding his powers and such, so I can see how it fits if that's a new/different take. And it adds a little more tension, I suppose. I guess I'm just more used to thinking of him as practically invincible against most things.

I assume this Superman will eventually creep towards invincibility, but letting him power up gradually over time is a pretty good good anime trick to keep things interesting for a while. And it makes sense within the context of the show as well, IMO. This Clark was terrified of his powers and never wanted to be special, so he never really explored them until the present.

His overall power level seems a little lower than normal, but Superman's threats generally increase in power relative to him, so Superman getting beat up doesn't seem particularly unusual to me.

He's way less powerful/invincible than most versions of Superman, but I think it really works for this version of the story.

Plus I think a lot it can be explained as him not having unlocked his own potential, OH HEY JUST LIKE IN DRAGONBALL

Yeah, I think it works too. I saw Parasite in the most recent and actually thought "How is he going to deal with this one?" so it actually managed to create some Stakes.

In other animated series news, who do you think killed Nightwing in Harley Quinn? I think right now my money is on Harley herself, her repressed villain side acting out on its own like it has been.

I loved the way they handled Joker in the latest episode, too. Joker-as-suburban-dad/Mayor has been a fun arc and I was a little hesitant when he announced his return to villainy, but I like the idea of him getting stuck there and not being able to make a comeback after all.

Just just caught the episode, and JorEl will definitely be a goodie. There's no explanation for why the invasion stopped; just the portal closed and things turned off. Someone had to stop it. Zod leading the invasion is a good bet. I'm hazarding to guess that JorEl developed portal tech to evac Krypton. Zod and the military appropriate it in order to take over Earth militarily versus coming in peace as refugees. JorEl has a conscious and stops his own people from wrecking up Earth as conquerors, but sneaks his babby in.

It really depends on where they wanna take the show from here. I could see this entente between Harley and Ivy being drawn out where their professional work continues to be at odds. If that's the case, then Harley being the culprit doesn't make a lot of sense for that storyline, because it feels like it's gonna come to a head soon regarding keeping Nightwing dead. (I mean, Talia literally turned the Lazarus pit into a day spa, they'll resurrect Nightwing for sure.) I really don't think Harley's going full crazy though. They wanted us to think that with her seeing herself, but that was just time-displaced Harley via the time sphere probably setting up some whacky stuff.

The big question to me about this Nightwing plotline is... why is Bruce still in jail? I feel like if Dick died while Batman was in jail, he'd lose it, blame himself for not being there, and bust himself out in order to hunt down whoever did.

Regarding the current Harley Quinn plotline: Now that time travel is involved, I am expecting a complete Bill & Ted "we set everything up" revisiting of the season, with "I'm losing my mind" imaginary Harley Quinn simply being "slightly from the future" Harley Quinn. Also: Nightwing is alive and timeskipped somehow, and Dead Nightwing is a corpse from the future.

A man can dream...

SO THE FINALE OF MY ADVENTURES WITH SUPERMAN AIRED LAST NIGHT AND IT WAS GOOD.

SOLID TV SHOW.

Harley Quinn finds new and exciting ways to out-ridiculous itself and I just... I just love this show. It's so special

I will also add to the chorus about the My Adventures w/ Supes. Absolutely wonderful show.

Something to note about the season finale: If you watch the episode with subtitles, all of Jor-El's dialog is translated in the subs. Just in case you wanted to know what he was saying. (spoilers: Jor-El is a good guy, who woulda thunk.)

Hey so when the hell is Doom Patrol coming back to finish out its current (last) season??
Apparently now-ish. I didn’t realize I was watching the finale until everybody died. A bit depressing but a nice send-off to these weird fucks. Glad they gave it a chance to wrap up.

I could not explain to you why, if you asked me to make a list of practically everything I currently hate about both anime and DC animated adaptations, it would include all the components of what is happening here...

But this trailer makes me hyped for the project. Huh.

I forgot to reply to this. I did indeed watch the last half of season 4. I feel like the show overall had some trouble getting its characters into the place it wanted them to be, but by the end, they finally got there. I was amused that Immortus ended up being such an inconsequential villain. She just went off to have a musical career with the Werebuts! It's fiiiine.

Hah yeah, kind of felt like they suddenly looked at the clock and went “shit, let’s wrap up all the villains at once”.
