I finally got around to watching Crisis on Infinite Earths and overall I quite liked it, though I feel the last two episodes didn't quite deliver on the setup from the first three.

And how wild is it that this and Endgame were the same year?

Anyway, it's kind of a shame that the ending reveal of the SuperFriends HQ and the big table with a spot for all of em may never really be followed up on, largely thanks to Covid slowing down the seasons to follow, but also things like Supergirl ending this season, Ruby Rose leaving Batwoman, etc. The next big crossover may be missing a number of the characters that would be sitting there.

Listened to an episode of How Did This Get Made?, crossing over with Blank Check, discussing the Snyder cut. Its a good episode and definitely atypical episode as it is a mostly positive view of the movie, though most of the hosts feeling very mixed feelings overall. Also, comes to the conclusion that the increased LACK of cohesion within the DC Universe on film probably makes this more palatable than the previous narrative of "the other films will follow this lead".

It's still kind of funny to me that Black Lightning got a spot at the table despite them having, like, two minutes with him.

Heatwave has a deeper emotional connection to the rest of the team

Glorious Godfrey is one of my favorite villains, because to this day, he's still frightfully relevant.

The continued relevance of these villain is the bright side of not fixing any of our society's problems over the last 50 years.

Zack Snyder's Justice League:
  • I liked it. I didn't love it, but it was pretty good. I think this is an interesting case study in how movies are made and what can work in different contexts. Because I don't think you can release a four-hour superhero movie and have it be successful. Having it as a home streaming release makes it work in a way where it wouldn't if you couldn't take a break when you needed to. It sort of felt more like watching a miniseries than a movie. Which is kind of the tragedy of all of it. I would think you could probably cut it down to three hours without losing too much, but they wanted a two hour movie and that's just not what Zack filmed. That seems like something that really needs to be worked out before you've spent hundreds of millions filming a script. After the reception of Batman v. Superman, I don't blame WB for wanting a breezier and lighter movie, but I don't know why they would have hired Zack if that's what they wanted.
  • Zack was put in a difficult situation being asked to change his vision and eventually-maybe being fired from the project. I'm not a big fan of his but it's cool that he had an opportunity to finish it the way he wanted. I think Joss Whedon was also in a difficult position taking another person's project and having to transform it into something else with a few reshoots. I only saw the original movie once a few years ago so my memory is fuzzy, but I can't think of many notable sequences that were missing from the Snyder cut, making me think most of what he shot was just band aids to cut a four hour movie down to two without it completely falling apart. I'm not excusing his apparent shitty on-set behavior, just saying it wasn't an easy job.
  • I like Superman in this movie. I don't like the idea they keep pushing that Lois being alive is all that is stopping him from turning evil, but his limited time in the movie is well spent. I also like seeing Batman as part of a DC Universe and not just a Batman Universe as he almost always is in live action. I forgot to mention it in the BvS post but I like his lake house, and Alfred was much more Alfred-y in this one. Wonder Woman doesn't get a ton of development but I appreciate her compassion for others as her real strongest attribute.
  • The Snyder cut generally does a much better job with the new characters, since, they actually get a chance to develop and have their own moments. Flash is kind of annoying but the deeper exploration of the Speed Force is neat. He looks kind of silly when he's running but I'm not sure it's possible to make Flash not look silly in live action. Cyborg also had more to do and I appreciated his character a lot more. Aquaman is fine but I'm not sure about his motivation as a character. He goes from not giving a shit to changing his mind offscreen and I don't really have a handle on what he cares about.
  • Steppenwolf was actually fine? I think his design is dumb but he was actually a character in this version and I knew what he was about. All the extra Apokolips stuff in general worked for me. The Harry Lennix bits were maybe the addition that least needed to be there. I don't dislike what they're doing with him but the movie had enough epilogues and didn't really need more. I remain ambivalent about the Knightmare world but that scene wasn't bad.
  • I have no idea if the apparent success of this cut will change any of WB's plans going forward or if I would even want it to. But I am glad I didn't end up feeling like I wasted my time.

I somehow forgot to mention this but one of the reasons why I like Justice League more than Batman v Superman is I like Batman and Superman and the Justice League and I would just much rather watch them be friends and save the world than fight each other over some bullshit!!!!

I think the foreshadowing with Lois isn't so much that she's what's keeping Superman from turning evil, but rather his grief at her death would render him susceptible to anti-life.

I can't remember how well the movie actually explains what the Anti-Life Equation does if you're not familiar.

The film explains it, but it's fairly brief and only happens once so I don't blame anyone for being confused about it. Long story short, the Anti-Life Equation is just a magical macguffin that allows its wielder to cancel out everyone's free will, so that Darkseid can more efficiently conqueror the multiverse and turn everyone into his obedient thralls.

I think the foreshadowing with Lois isn't so much that she's what's keeping Superman from turning evil, but rather his grief at her death would render him susceptible to anti-life.
I think it can be a little of both? But definitely more what you're saying here. And if you'll believe Snyder's word, it's what he's said in interviews were his intentions. I think MoS Superman is well established as a fundamentally decent, good person. But I'd like to think that a more classical Superman with a broader, more established circle of friends, super-compatriots, and coworkers would have been more invested in the world (MoS and BvS go to great lengths to establish how alienated Superman must feel), and less susceptible to personal grief of losing a single loved one than this Supes, whose smaller network of friends/family/loved ones means those smaller number of relationships are pulling more emotional weight. So when Lois (and their unborn child!) dies at the hands of Darkseid, despite Superman entrusting her safety to Batman, it makes him vulnerable enough to fall prey to Darkseid and Anti-Life.

Relatedly, that's kind of the whole purpose of the Knightmare scene, which is to prelude not just that, but how Batman can fix things. The Joker taunting Batman about being a coward, is foreshadowing for Batman taking the hit for Lois and dying in her place in a do-over, so that Superman doesn't fall to Anti-Life and can go on to defeat Darkseid.

I personally would love to see that story come to fruition, but I expect it never will. Not just because WB is run by prideful assholes who seem to hate Snyder for making them look like fools, but also because doing a time travel story to fix the bad guy's win post-Endgame is probably something the unimaginative suits at WB probably want to avoid.

Flash is kind of annoying but the deeper exploration of the Speed Force is neat. He looks kind of silly when he's running but I'm not sure it's possible to make Flash not look silly in live action.
It looks super weird and goofy, but I kinda dig it? My guess is that the intention of his movements is that he's supposed to look like he's swimming while running, which would fit with Snyder's whole schtick of trying to make a more realistic Speed Force.

Flash's "running" is based on speed-skating. He's trying to minimize friction and keep his movement smooth.

Yea that checks out. Basically still gets at what I was thinking with regards to trying to move more efficiently through the air to reduce friction/drag since at the speeds he's going, the fluid dynamics of air would be more like trying to move through water than a gas.

Is... The Flash setting up Mongul to be this seasons big villain now that the stupid Miron Master plot is over?

God, I hope so.
