Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Hype Train To the Stars

I’m also wondering what’s up with La’an also being written, if not off, at least to the side for a bit. That one kind of smells like acting schedule conflicts or something...
It could be something. But who can really say. Taking a leave of absence in order to sort out something personal is the kind of thing that happened very often and would be over and done with within a single episode of TNG.

I watched the first episode of this and it's basically everything I wished Discovery was, so good job I guess. They could just always have been making Star Trek like this the whole time and... didn't, until now (yeah yeah, variety and Star Trek fatigue etc. but damn did that first episode nail it completely)

I am super bummed they killed off Hemmer, I dug him a lot and I don't think we got nearly enough time with him. He really shone in last week's episode, and now he's gone. It's making me wonder if they plan on gradually getting rid of most of the current cast to make room for the OG Enterprise crew. I guess we'll see if they introduce a new Engineer named Mr. Scott.

Fake edit: That was a banger of a season finale. Really cannot wait to see more. Filming on S2 wrapped a few days ago, so we'll probably be watching more SNW about a year from now. I really look forward to it!

Also.
Ethan Peck is great as Spock. Even better than Quinto was. This show is astounding. Maybe not disc4 level... But top fucking tier

Watched episode 1 of this weeks ago, loved it, but kind of forgot about it. Just watched episode 2, and that one was just all I want out of Trek, I guess. They used one episode to do more with Uhura than the original series did during its whole run, she is a great character. I generally love, seeing a bunch of familiar characters newly interpreted in a way that works and makes sense. Spock in DISCO never really worked for me, because he always felt so clearly like they just wanted to put a big name, maybe the biggest, into this show to get new viewers. Here, we simply have a crew that includes a bunch of people that will, later in their lives, be on another star ship that was also featured in a show. Also, and I understand that is just a me-problem, and a really dumb one at that, but I hated his beard.

The idea of the episode, too, is very much what I want from this franchise, more than I ever understood before watching this episode. It never was the Kirk era that I didn't like exploring more, as I always thought. I just want them to find new, weird and beautiful things and explore them, learning about different cultures and bizarre phenomena in the process. Which is, like, what this episode did really well. Loved the cave and the egg-shaped thing, just from an asthetical point, they looked so beautiful and the whole thing felt so old-school sci-fi.

Together with Lower Decks, this is clearly, by far, my favourite new Trek show. And from my feeling at the moment, I honestly think the only Trek show I love more is TNG (but this is, of course, based on only two episodes, but damn, what a great impression these two made on me). I guess I'm just tired of Trek trying to use the same races again and again, and simply want to see new wonders.

Part of this is probably, that I crave the optimism of early sci-fi (not early early, but Golden Era stuff). I just read a few short stories from Asimov and PK Dick, and the naive optimism about how we are this close to reaching a new phase of humanity, of the clear vision of "we can, no, we will make it" feels so, so good in the face of everything the real world throws at us at the moment. Naive isn't even a critisicm here, I love the vision, the idea of reaching for the stars and actually getting there.

Point is, this show seems to go for exactly that, and can do it way better than something like DISCO or PICARD. This isn't a critisicm of these shows, they are just going for something else (even if, in the end, they argue that we can overcome our difficulties). I just like that we shift our focus away from the Federation itself, and just explore. It feels good, and I hope this show keeps that spirit up.

Welp. It's not QUITE what I was guessing, since it's in an alternate future that's six or seven years away, but we very clearly had a Mr. Scott cast, even in voice only. Was that voice credited? Maybe we'll see them next season, we WILL need a new engineer after all. Kinda surprised they didn't go all the way and show us Sulu, Chekov, and Bones as well.

Fun episode overall, even if the big lesson was kind of muddled by the end: Pike: Ok I promise not to fuck around with the timeline, now excuse me while I vow to rescue Number 1, which would be fucking with what I know about the timeline. I guess here it doesn't count.

Oh and is it weird that both this and Lower Decks currently have unresolved 'we gotta rescue Cast Member from Federation jail!' cliffhangers?

This was one damn good season of Star Tracks and probably one of the best seasons of NuTrek overall. I do enjoy Picard and what it's doing but damn if this show isn't scratching a very particular itch that DISCO and PIC just weren't.

Maybe we'll see them next season
Producers have already gone on the record saying we won’t. S2 has already wrapped up filming as of a week or two ago as well, so even if they changed their minds about it, it’s too late.

What he knows about the timeline and her getting arrested comes from an alternate future he’s already vowed to not let happen. So I think it’s fair game. And it’s not like he got a visit from Admiral Pike going “hey, don’t help her” so 🤷

It’s odd but not necessarily bad. It might not even be a coincidence; the show runners for these shows routinely meet and discuss what their shows are doing and seek input/feedback from each other to make sure they’re not stepping on each other’s shoes or violating canon or so forth. I wouldn’t be surprised if McMahan didn’t be like, “Hey that’s a cool idea, mind if we copy it?” It’s not the first time Lower Decks has had this kind of plot point coincidence either. I also thought it was an ironic twist of fate that both SNW and The Orville this week both had “Don’t mess with the timeline!”moral dilemmas as their main theme.

Hey look! A new trailer!

It's TMP-Klingons! Fun quips! Kirk maybe banging out with Khan's great granddaughter?? What's not to like!?!? The two month wait is going to be torturous

Carol Kane’s character was certainly… something? Curious what they’ll be doing with her.
I do not know your full feelings on this and don’t want to jump to conclusions, but to me this reads as very agnostic or even apprehensive?

Meanwhile I’m just like, “Yes, I’ll take as much space-Baba Yaga/vampire as you can give me, thank you.” 😂

Space vampire is a better read on it than “Guinan but she has a weird accent for some reason”. I’m back on board.

I wonder if every season of SNW is going to change out the chief engineer and we'll just be forever waiting for Scotty to finally show up but all we get is another voice cameo in the series finale. Carol Kane is always a delight but I kinda wish we still had Hemmer, honestly.

But anyway, good episode, second season is starting out strong, and I appreciate not diving right in with saving Number One though it is a bit weird that Pike went off on his mission at the start and we didn't even check back with him at the end of the episode. Ah well, next week I guess.

Take a break! I like to engage my hobbies in waves/cycles. Switch to a next thing before you can get too bored/burnt out by it. Then come back and resume later.

That’s also one of the many reasons why I enjoy watching shows on a weekly basis instead of marathoning them. You never really risk burning out on a show that way, and it leaves you wanting more instead of ever being overwhelmed or tired out or whatnot.

Just watched the new ep, it was real good fun! If I had one quibble it would be that the fist fights maybe went on longer than necessary, but eh it’s fine. Good Klingon times, good Spock shenanigans, good to have Naan back.

It's just... I never thought I'd say those words!

Onboard with this season within seconds, loved it all especially the new engineer.

Same here. I will say that every time I see Carol Kane as Pelia I think of her character in The Princess Bride, which I want to stress is not at all a bad thing.

Edited to avoid a double post: This week’s episode is a real triumph. A highly successful new entry in the tradition of Star Trek courtroom dramas.

Glad to see “I’ll allow it but tread carefully counselor” will continue to happen in every TV trial hundreds of years from now.

Pretty good trial episode. It was no 'Measure of a Man', but what is? It wrapped up a bit neatly but we all knew it had to. Kinda wish we saw jerk-Vulcan throw a non-tantrum at losing but it's probably not the last we've seen of him, he seems to have it out for Pike so he'll probably pop up again.

I hope the only reason we didn't see Carol Kane this week is so next week Pike goes down to engineering and is all "who the hell is this???"

You can't give me Carol Kane and then not give me Carol Kane and expect me to be okay with it.

Otherwise, good episode.
