Sora bad. Goku good but I'm ok with him not being here when he has like twenty of his own games. As an unironic Waluigi stan who has picked him as their avatar in every Mario spinoff game he's been in I am forlorn.

Not being playable in Smash is the most Waluigi thing that could possibly happen.

My friends and I used to fight over who got to pick Waluigi in Mario Kart/Tennis/Golf/Party/etc over twenty years ago. I deeply resent the ironic Waluigi Smash memes. I just want to go "wa-wa-wa-wa-wa-wa-waaaaaaaah" while slapping Donkey Kong and Kirby.

During the gameplay demo, I got a strong impression that Sora has been designed as a character who's meant to help beginning players get comfortable with advanced gameplay concepts. There was a strong emphasis on bread-and-butter combos: down tilt into up tilt, down throw into short hop forward air, that sort of thing. The simplicity of his kit makes it easy to see which moves connect to which, and he wins by pressing his advantage and following up weak attacks with strong ones. That kind of follow-up inevitably leads most fighters off-stage, where Sora's huge floaty jumps and really powerful and open-ended recovery make him feel a lot safer than most other fighters.

Jumping off-stage is a risk that a lot of players don't like taking. It's not even a matter of experience, either - I've been playing these damn games since the first one launched, and I still have a strong preference for staying on solid ground (and do better as fighters who aren't good at the off-stage chase). Sora's air mobility makes him very comfortable going wide and going deep, and I think this will make a lot of players get comfortable going wide and going deep. Not that he's the only fighter with really good recovery, but also that among such fighters he's got a very clear and reliable gameplan for what to do once he's out there.

Now, to business. According to the community predictions, nobody guessed Sora, and not a single damn one of us got a single pass 2 DLC fighter right. However, @Seven mentioned both Pyra and Mythra, which I think technically makes them the winner. I bid you name a boon, stalwart warrior.

@BEAT is runner-up.
I need only the satisfaction of knowing that I have out-guessed my fellow Tyrants in this lengthy battle of guesswork. I'll pass my boon to BEAT as long as he does not use it for evil.

Back on topic though, Sora is definitely a disappointment to me, but at least it's not Crash Bandicoot.

Yeah. As much as I would've liked Crash Bandicoot (and Coco as an alt) to get in at one point, I am not cool with how shitty ActiVision Blizzard is.

Looks like there is only Square Enix content in this pack, no Disney proper content. The deal might literally have only been with Square Enix. We'll have to wait for the credits to confirm whether it's pure, though.

Looks fun. With that really strong recovery and simple kit, they might be the fighter to get me to feel brave enough to chase enemies off-stage for the KO. Most of the time I'm too conscious of the fact that if they defend themselves successfully I'll probably die, but Sora can probably make it back safely even if they get outplayed offscreen.

I believe Sora is co-owned by Disney and Square. If nothing else there’s the Mickey keychain.

Disney is credited in the IP Holder line as well. They're involved in some capacity.

Sora is and always has been 100% disney owned.

I know a lot of people assume he's a square Character because he looks like a square character, but he's not.

Disney has always had complete freedom to do whatever they want with the dork, they just haven't felt the urge to pit him in any non-kingdom hearts things, because that's really all he's useful for from their perspective.

As for how they pulled this off, I assume they got someone at square to call the house of mouse until a middle-manager who didn't know the difference between smash bros and the latest mobile gotcha picked up, then told him it was "Dlc to promote latecomers to try our hit 2019 game."

I find it darkly hilarious that this is the last time Sora and Cloud will appear together in a real* video game.

*MOBILE GATCHA BULLSHIT DOESN'T COUNT.

BOON ME UP
The way boons work is you have to specify the boon you want, and if it is within my power and does not jeopardize the realm or my subjects, I grant it.

After sleeping on it and letting things settle in, I'm very happy with where Ultimate ended up.

The series started as a big crossover event between popular Nintendo characters. Over time it added retro characters, brand new franchises, really out there picks, and characters from a much broader pool. Nintendo's in a different place now than they were in 1999, and Smash Bros. reflects that. I got used to the series being laser focused on my interests, and I was not super excited about a lot of the DLC picks as they were being announced. But, for every character that I'm not wild about, other people think they're the best character in the game. All of the characters I like are still here (really, all of them), and now there are characters that new people can be excited about too.

For a game that's about crossover fights between different franchises, ending on a character who was made for a crossover between Final Fantasy and Disney feels appropriate. Nintendo made playing cards with Disney characters as far back as 1959, before any of the other 3rd parties in Smash Bros. existed. There are untold numbers of Disney games on Nintendo consoles, and Kingdom Hearts is only a few years younger than Smash Bros. itself. I don't really care about Sora personally, but he seems like a really good way to end the game.

And hey, someone already made an updated “Everyone is Here” trailer with the full cast. This is really well done. They recreated a lot of the scenes from the original trailer so they could add characters in, and it it plays around with the original scenes and with character reveals. This would have been great as part of the presentation.

did their best!
This announcement led to me trying to play some Kingdom Hearts 3, 'cause I never finished it, and discovering that, yeah, Disney's existence has made the series radioactive to me. I can't enjoy the bits I like (high-skill-ceiling combat and Kojima-style noun-soup storytelling) because I'm just thinking "yeah but like, fuck Disney, though."
