NYT Has Bought Wordle (Wordle Thread)

John

(he/him)
I squeaked that 8-way one out at the very end, after spending 5 guesses trying to get the first word right. I had 4 guesses left and 4 words remaining, and was able to lock those down satisfyingly. I'd think with more words per solve, it'd end up being slightly easier, as you use most of the alphabet up front. After that, you're just doing the jumble.

They laughed when I suggested 1024dle, but who's laughing now? And why do they say this nitrous oxide smells like "strawberry"?

Yes. In the next year there are 25 words they've removed from the list, they'll probably remove more as time goes on. The one I got today was one of the removed ones (obscure). I got it because I have the webpage cached.
Have to say, I agree with the removal for the word I saw.

Wordle didn't click for me for whatever reason, but I am enjoying Worldle, where you get a silhouette of a country and try to narrow it down, wrong guesses give you distance and direction to the correct one.

You can also enable random rotation of the silhouette, or not start with the image at all which is insane.

Huh, I got today's country in... Well, I guessed one country in Europe, and then guessed the country right next to the correct one. But I also knew I would never guess the name on my own, so I looked up a map of my second guess and found the correct one next to it. So I got to "The country right next to (blank)" in 3 guesses, though would never have actually guessed correctly otherwise.

I give myself... half credit...?

That went pretty well.

Lol, loaded that one up and today's outline was instantly recognizable, so got it in one.

Edit: Procrastinating and did the Quordle, which went pretty well too despite some slightly less common words:

Octordle is pretty ridiculous, but after getting no words in my first five guesses today I managed to get one word per guess for the remaining eight, some of which seemed like real leaps from the letters I had. That said, by the time you get to the end of it there aren’t many letters left unused so whatever word you can think of is likely to be the correct one.

The ultimate multi-variant just dropped.

I tried a game with a ridiculous number of words and, as I suspected, after adding a certain number of words the game only becomes easier.

My understanding is that so far the only change the NYT made to difficulty was in the opposite direction, changing the Greek classics/philosophy/history students only solution word "agora" to the much more common "aroma."

I thought Wordle didn't accept/use plurals.

...

Have I been wrong about that this entire time?

Yeah it definitely accepts plurals and also present tense verbs. They won't be an answer, but if you're just trying to eliminate all but one of a set of potential letters and that's the first thing with those letters that pop into your head...

I guess that appoach doesn't work on hard mode, but I do not understand the impulse to make Wordle hard. Play a crossword or something instead of making Wordle RNG based. There's no reason this should ever happen and no skill involved if it does:

Plurals are in the dictionary, but not in the answer list IIRC
Then the day I can post this will never come.

My "use two unrelated words that rule out a ton of common words" will never get me a quick finish, but it does help rule situations like here a lot of the time
