NYT Has Bought Wordle (Wordle Thread)

Wild. I hope the site remains fairly bare-bones instead of being invaded by big corporate site cruft. The best things on the internet are the ones *not* designed to make money, which of course is a difficult thing to maintain and scale.

That said, I certainly don't fault some random shmoe with a nice idea and good design sense from taking a completely unexpected million dollar pay-out.

I'm honestly just happy for this random guy, who suddenly became a millionaire. The rest seens bizarre, such a sum for a game of this kind? Ok, no idea why that's worth that much, but don't care. As mentioned, I'm happy for the guy.

I definitely can’t fault someone for making something that delighted so many people that he ended up set for life.

A lot of people are hand-wringing about this but there are plenty of free clones out there if you want to avoid the inevitable monetization.

Are people seriously angry at the guy, for selling a silly game he probably made in his free time for fun? For an absurd amount, that will make it possible for him to now fulfill some dreams, and just be set for life, financially? Just because they might not be able to continue playing this five minute game, each day?

That sound you just heard came from my eyes, when they fell to the floor. I rolled them so hard, that they just plopped out.

The "value" of Wordle over any of its myriad clones is so ephemeral the NYT had better handle it with extreme care lest it evaporate like fog in the morning.

Absolutely nothing would have stopped the Times from spinning up their own Wordle clone for a fraction of the price but they chose to buy Wordle instead. I hope they respect how fragile of a thing they now own.

Everyone I know is playing it, and it's been designed so it's hard to get bored of. It's a phenomenon at the moment.

I only recently heard about it, on a podcast, but that was also last week, I think. Might be, because the game is English, so it is probably just a little thing here, in Austria.

But after playing two rounds, I see the appeal. It's pretty fun, simple and short.

I don’t understand the appeal of “Look at this word I guessed! No, I won’t show you the word, or my guess.” Does everyone get the same word each day?

I’ve been told those posts are impossible to parse for low vision users, as well. That’s forgivable when it’s a free game by one dude but NYT should get on that.

Yes, that's the point. It's everyone competing to get the same word and being annoyed when one jammy git does it in two, somehow

The game has a high-contrast mode that apparently carries through to your tweets. It doesn't help you see other people's tweets, but the game is at least playable.

Wordle-likes:

https://zaratustra.itch.io/dordle challenges you to guess two words at once. Each guess counts toward both words, so at best, you could win in two tries.

https://hellowordl.net/ is exactly Wordle except that you can set the length of the word. For a real challenge, try it at 10 letters -- you'll have difficulty coming up with guesses.

https://qntm.org/wordle is to Wordle what that one Tetris variant is to Tetris. The game doesn't have a word in mind; it cheats so that your guess is as unhelpful as possible.

http://obscurdle.com/ is the Mu of Wordle variants. The colors mean something different in each game (not necessarily related to a target word), and your goal is to deduce what they mean so you can reproduce the given color pattern. This ends up not being very Wordle-like, but it's fun anyway.

Somebody with two browsers more like

Although one day the word will be ADIEU and the world will hear my crowing
I got it in two legitimately last week.

Anyway this actually seems like a smart addition to NYT's other one-a-day puzzles, like the crossword. I don't play word games much, but I enjoy Wordle because it's low-pressure and you're done in a few minutes and move on with your day. I don't begrudge Wardle making "made it" money off selling something he apparently made for his girlfriend over a weekend that suddenly took off—he gets a success, and doesn't have to manage the game as a way of life. Win-win for him. I don't quite understand the ire at the NYT for buying it, either. Paywall stuff aside, the puzzles don't really have anything to do with questionable coverage/editorial trends from the NYT, even if they are under the same overall banner. It's like getting mad at a cotton candy seller at Disneyland for the company's consolidation of the entertainment industry.

It is. And it's also maddening if you're driving a car, and Siri's auto-dictation starts saying all your texts outloud. 😂

BLACK SQUARE EMOJI, BLACK SQUARE EMOJI, YELLOW SQUARE EMOJI, BLACK SQUARE EMOJI, BLACK SQUARE EMOJI, GREEN SQUARE EMOJI, GREEN SQUARE EMOJI, GREEN SQUARE EMOJI, etc, etc.

I thought WRUNG was fairly obscure. Participle of an already-uncommon verb?

Yeah but like the other day I tried "wight" on the way to "light," when I could have just done "light" instead

With today's puzzle I got the last 4 letters figured out and had the answer narrowed down to 3 possibilities (that I was aware of). Picking the simplest one served me well.
