Legit question: what do Samus Returns fans feel about the drill boss? I quit the game around hour 3 or 4, but I watched some LPs and that particular boss would have definitely made me quit if I had held out till then.

Was legitimately one of my favorite parts of the game, even if it was a bit long. I thought the trick to it was clever and I only had to die once to pick up on it. Did not like the Ridley battle at all, but I'm not sure I've ever enjoyed a Ridley battle in any game since Metroid 1.

Liked it way better than almost any of the bosses in Metroid Fusion, which others seem to love fighting. Metroid has stuff for everyone I guess.

Spicy prediction: This game is either going to have the morph ball appear quite late or not at all, and I'm all here for it.
It shows the morph ball for a couple of seconds in the trailer, so it is at least in the game at some point.

It's more than two years, since I played it - I actually remember very, very little about the game. But I liked the bosses, and, watching a video, makes it look like a fun battle. So, I guess I liked it. I certainly didn't hate it, I guess I would remember that.

I do remember being frustrated by the Ridley fight, though.

They could make a worse map, somehow. I mean, they made Mirror of Fate, I know they have it in 'em.

I mean the quality shift from Mirror of Fate to Samus Returns certainly suggests they can learn from past mistakes, though it is really funny to think they shifted from that to a literal Metroid rather than make a SOTNlike 'Vania

Samus can get a bit of running momentum and slide through small gaps. She can hang from ledges by her fingertips. But she can't fit through small gaps without space to run up to them, even if she's dangling by her fingers and there's a missile upgrade like right there.

I wonder of existing Metroid amiibos will have any functionality in Dread, or if it'll only be the new ones. I have the Samus and Metroid combo from Samus Returns, as well as Smash 4 Samus and Zero Suit. Dunno if I'll try and get the new ones.

I really liked Samus Returns, and I also liked AM2R. Two different and excellent takes on the same source material. I very much expect I will enjoy this as well, and it feels like the major mechanical issues people didn't like from SR are fixed, and the other flaw (well, "flaw") will be fixed from not having to follow Metroid II's structure.

Amazon is saying the new ones will give Samus a free Energy Tank or Missile Tank (depending on which one) the first time you use it or a full energy or missile recharge afterwards.

Gonna be the biggest pendant and say that Metroid Dread already was both real and released a long ass time ago.

I was at E3 2000 or 2001, and there was a demo reel out in a dusty corner of the floor for Metroid: Dread, looking to be running on GBC hardware. It ended up being renamed Fusion, and the abilities shown in that old demo reel had Samus and a Metroid fusing and all that, but different abilities.

One of the highlights for me was seeing Samus with wolverine like claws and using that to scale a wall. Wonder if any of the stuff I saw that day will be revisited in this.

Was it this?

I kind of like how the "organic" looking bits of this new (post-Fusion?) suit look kind of like muscle fibers.

Some of it is the same footage I saw but parts of that were definitely newer.

My spicy prediction: Considering the cutscenes are 30 fps and the gameplay shown 60 fps, I’m betting they originally targeted 30 fps, and 60 fps is a Switch Pro enhancement.

Sounds like you don't get it for a while though; the bits of the intro segment they showed off at treehouse live only feature one big upgrade in the first twenty-ish minutes.

Eh, that's just a thing lots of cinematic action games have been doing for years. 24-30 frames for movie-like cinematics, a target of 60 frames for the gameplay.

Yeah, they showed the thing in our spoilers in the shorter "Development History" video. Who knows when you'll get it in the game!

A series highlight. Makes you use Samus' entire toolkit to good effect.

The Diggernaut chase scenes and Diggernaut-as-recurring-annoyance bits are great. The Diggernaut fight itself is 5 minutes of tedious, rote garbage. Flat-out my least favorite boss fight in the 2D series.

In contrast, all of the metroid fights are really really good (especially compared to AM2R).

Watching the Treehouse gameplay demo was a little frustrating in the get on with it sort of way, going over aspects of gameplay that have been series staples like they're new features.

Halfway through I realized that the girl holding the controller was probably still in diapers when Metroid Fusion came out. They damn well are new features to some of the video's audience.

This is where I was at with the Diggernaut fight, though with "five minutes" being "like an hour". This is because I was having trouble with the final "phase" (or maybe the second from final phase), but had to repeat the earlier, "easier" parts like a thousand times to get back to that phase after every death. And those early bits aren't in any way difficult, but you just have to keep dodging and stuff and waiting for an opening, and maybe losing some health along the way when you mess up because you got in the wrong rhythm. I loathe boss battles where you have to wait to "counter" for precisely this reason. My ideal fight is, like, Super Metroid Ridley, where you can just go full hog on a missile barrage if you're feeling saucy.

No opinion on the Diggernaut as a boss but it did result in the kill scene where a dispassionate Samus blasts it away for good without looking its way in the process, in a contrived and embarrassing overreach of attempting to portray her as "badass." Dread, from the same developers, is continuing on that track, and for many people this is the proof given that Mercury Steam "gets" Samus as a character like few have--to me, it speaks to everything I detest about their approach in portraying her and the world around her.

Well - still better than Other M's portrayal. I'd rather her be generically badass than diminutive.

This is some wildly unfair infantilization of Theresa, who’s been at the company and involved with Metroid games for at least as long as me, a 40-year old man.
