The next Metroid should replace the Screw Attack with a melee upward/downward stab.

Metroid is sideways Zelda.
Absolutely, and it's especially obvious with the first games in the series. There are some differences besides the perspective (Zelda 1 has free healing services, money, shops, keys, maps of a sort, and NPC advice) but both NES games have a focus on collecting permanent upgrades that increase your chances of surviving and allow for new ways to interact with their respective worlds.

As an expression of the core ideas of the Metroid series, Dread isn't very good. Puzzles are straightforward, exploration and backtracking is severely limited, and the atmosphere is compromised by the focus on action. As a 2D action game, Dread rules. Samus' moves feel smooth and give you a lot of options, and the combat is tough but fair.
I think this is slightly harsh on the exploration in Dread, but yes, as an action game it's spectacular. For me it actually enhanced Metroid's unease, because at any point something really tough could ambush you, and the game had some pretty high trust in your competency.

It may be a Metroidvania, but it ain't a Metroid.

The powerups aren't necessarily weapons, NPCs and so on.

Metroid Prime is actually not a Metroidvania. If the definition of Metroidvania included 3D games, it would become so broad that the universe would collapse.

Counterpoint: Super Mario 64 is a Metroidvania. (It even takes place in a haunted castle!)

In Metroid 2 is the Chozo ruins in that game have these robots that look like this:

These are the Autrack, Autoad, and Autom respectively.

One cool thing about Dread is that it realizes that it's setting of ZDR is essentially a sister colony to SR-388, so it has several Chozo automatons that share the same naming convention and design language. To demonstrate this, I made some mockups a while back of the Autclast, Autector, and Autool in Metroid 2's style:

I just think Dread is neat.

Thanks. I spent and inordinate amount of time disassembling Metroid 2 last year, but without a broader vision for a hack I never got around to inserting those enemies into the game.

And yeah, that Dread manual is very tempting. The original M1 manual is still one of the best aesthetic interpretations of the series, and that is a very good imitation of it.
