Yeah that metaphor works really well for our current zeitgeist. At 44, I'd already mostly made my peace with being well into middle age, but it's been a helluva weird and stressful year.
And now I have even less doubt that I am the oldest person on this forum.

Heh. There's a few of us milling about up here, but I don't remember for sure who else may have been older than me. (I think ex-fearless-leader Jeremy has a year or so on me but he's not really around these parts.)

I just realized we are six years away from an Austin Powers reboot that spoofs the Brosnan/Cruise/Damon era of Spy movies being transplanted into the modern age.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze was released to theatres thirty years ago today.

Apple Music is trying to tell me that New Year by Death Cab for Cutie is dad rock, and I feel like that term has lost all meaning. I’m not even sure that song is out of consideration of being incel rock, let alone in consideration for dad rock.

I guess either way it’s old now...

"Death Cab for Cutie is an American alternative rock band, formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997"

Bro they're 24 years old now! Holy shit. All my friends who liked them as teenagers are dads now. Math checks out. We're old now. 💀

I wore a Death Cab for Cutie shirt from the Plans album tour to physical therapy a couple weeks ago. The assistant saw it, and said "oh wow, I haven't thought about that album since I was in elementary school!" and in my head I went "oh dammit I bought this album in grad school because it looked like a gel electrophoresis result and I was running them constantly".

I was at the pharmacy yesterday waiting to speak to the pharmacist, and two people went up the counter while I was waiting and had to give their birthdays. The first was a woman that I'd mentally binned as my age. She was 11 years younger. The next was a woman that I'd mentally binned as a generation older than me. She was one year older.

I find that ages between about 25 and 55 are really hard to judge by sight. People just don't all age at the same rates, due to genetics, sun exposure, or whatever else (and I think a generation+ of having "teens" played by mid-20s actors, and the shift from so many people smoking to so many people not, has also made it harder to establish a baseline; what people looked like at 50 in the '70s or '80s is often not what they look like now).

Yep. I have a cousin who's two months younger than me and looks about a decade older.

Last weekend I bought a ran into the store for a six pack of beer and some snacks to take to a outdoor get together and when the clerk asked for my ID I was absolutely giddy about it.

We are about as far away in time from Spacewar, as Spacewar was from the Lumiere Brothers. Keep that in mind whenever anybody talks about video games as being a young industry.

.... honestly, I'm surprised it hasn't been *longer* since the GBA. I forgot it didn't come out 'til a year after the PS2!

Man, remember when it was just pretty cool that handhelds had finally escaped the 8-bit era and could stuff a li'l more SNES-ish? Just to give an idea of how much handheld devices have advanced since the Game Boy Advance? I'm typing this post on my phone.
