Help me choose a spoopy movie a day for October

Man, I vividly remember the video box art for I Was a Teenage Zombie...

13066_iwasateenagezombie1.jpg

But I wasn't prepared for what it was. Basically, it's an exceedingly cheap and extremely independent comedy (?) about teens who end up getting into a fight with their dealer over some shitty weed. During a fight, he accidentally dies and the teens decide to throw him into the water, the same day it is polluted with radioactive waste. The dealer is turned into a murderous zombie and kills one of the teens. His friends decide to use the water to bring him back, which he has mixed feelings about. The movie is... not very good. I was wondering why this was on Criterion beyond the fact its a bit of an oddity and clearly the hard work of someone with very little money to make a movie with and this film doesn't have much but it managed to scrounge up the cash (and maybe favours) for a very stacked soundtrack with Los Lobos, the Waitresses, the Fleshtones and the Violent Femmes. It's an odd little movie and it's stilted and awkward but beyond the soundtrack I do have some nice things to say; just existing is a triumph, clearly someone's labour of love, who isn't very skilled but really wanted to make something. And the guy playing the evil dealer zombie is bringing all the right energy to the role. He feels like he could have been a character in a Dolemite movie.

As for tomorrow...

Things Seen & Heard - No clue. It might not even be a horror movie but something more akin to a Lifetime thriller based on the description of moving to a new house and terrible secret but Netflix put it in a section called This Place is Evil.
Coherence - I don't know what it's about but I've heard people say it's a truly original sci-fi thriller.
The Happening - The plants and the wind have teamed up to destroy the human race!
Kuroneko - A classic Japanese horror flick.
Vivarium - Jason Eisenberg and Imogen Poots are in an Outer Limits or Twilight Zone episode where they are stuck in an abandon maze made of suburbia.

The Happening may have the dumbest plot ever but that trailer sure used to freak me out. Dude commits suicide by lawnmower.

I found Vivarium really powerful, but for the record it’s a claustrophobic, oppressive kind of horror. For anyone who’s interested but doesn’t feel like watching the movie, Bogleech has a long post that thoroughly describes and discusses it here. Be aware that the post goes through the movie scene by scene—nothing is left unspoiled.

The Happening is a movie where Johnny Legs should have been the star but was not. I'm not a big Leguizamo fan but he is clearly REALLY GOOD at acting and is much better being a caring father character than a comic relief character. Instead, we have two stupefying performances from Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel. I love the film sets Wahlberg up as a passionate science teacher but it really feels more like, to frame this in The Good Place terms, he thinks he's playing Chidi but he's just Jason. It is a bad movie but the best bad in this is weirdly watchable. That said, the weirdness in the film helps but it also feels a bit lethargic for large seconds and really just peters out.

Tomorrow:

Brightburn - The idea of "what if Superman but scary" is not bad except it's under the subgenre umbrella of "Superman but evil" which is the most boring superhero subgenre.
Carrie - Don't get too excited, this is "well, we got to do more stuff with Chloe Grace Moretz before she grows up." remake
The Hills Have Eyes (the remake) - Speaking of, this came out in the worst decade for horror remakes but I learned I like Alexandre Aja from Piranha 3D and Crawl (and I even like some of his produced movies. People seem to hate P2 but I love that one.)
The Living Skeleton - A Japanese movie from the 60s. It seems to involve a ghost of a man killed by pirates and the movie also has a mad scientist and a doppelganger.
Z - not the 1969 political thriller but a movie about a scary imaginary friend.

I really, truly, emphatically liked Brightburn (and that it never got the sequel it was setting itself up for is a pain that never fades) but… umm…

Living Skeleton sounds… like it’s something else

The Living Skeleton is a good movie but not as badshit as promise... until the end. Actually, it's something more like a neonoir revenge movie that pretends to be supernatural... then reveals in the last act there was some supernatural stuff the whole time under the hood. Tonally, I'd compare it to the Japanese equivalent of a Val Lewton movie. Some great set pieces. Go in with tempered expectations and I think you'll enjoy it.

Tomorrow:
Hubie Halloween - The Adam Sandler movie people say is "...not completely UNwatchable. There's a couple good gags."
The Grudge - The American one.
The Haunted Mansion - Eddie Murphy... sure was on a "worst decision" streak in that era.
The Lodger - Not the Alfred Hitchcock one, this one has sound. Still looks like a classy thriller, though.
The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow - This is probably... really bad. BUT it's only an hour. And that is a Hell of a title.

Even by the shoddy metric of American International Pictures filmography, The Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow is pretty lousy. Apparently it's a loose sequel to the teen melodrama Hot Rod Gang but while there's passing references to rumbles and a climactic hot rod race, which we are never actually shown, it's basically a bottom of the barrel comedy with musical guest no one has heard of and a bizarre Scooby Doo reveal that the ghost is... an American International Picture actor who plays all the monsters (the monster suit being reused from some other films), It's a film where if the punchlines aren't groanworthy they are confounding. But at least my curiosity is sated. You'd think the Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow would have some drag racing, instead it's teens who clearly wish they could drag race vaguely threaten each other. They clearly though this group of kids was going to be the Dead End Kids of AIP. This did not happen.

It's your last chance to pick my movies for tomorrow!

Baby Sitter: Killer Queen - The first one is kind of a 50/50 movie for me. Not perfect but has some stuff I like. And better than most McG movies.
The Strangers - Long meant to see this. I'm rarely scared by films but this speaks to the thing that ALWAYS gets me; you aren't alone in the house...
Haunted Mansion - The new one people also don't seem to like (shame, I remember thinking the preview looked promising and it sure has a solid cast).
The Lure - Flesh eating mermaids come on land... and start a nightclub act. I hear this is amazing.
Another Evil - Another Shudder pick; a guy hires an exorcist to rid his home of ghosts but guy and exorcist are in over their heads. Though the director is an established comedy writer, apparently it only starts comedic, then goes in a different, darker direction.

Baby Sitter 2 is surprisingly great actually. I have to give it a big ding for how it rationalizes itself, but then it goes and brings back all the characters from the first one, and yes I mean all the cultists who very much died, and goes into stuff like flashbacks of the various other things the guy without a shirt tried doing without a shirt before joining in..

It's that time of year. I already chose the movie for day one but what should I watch for day 2?

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - Big budget version of a dumb novelty idea. Still, there might be some fun here.
Alison’s Birthday - I have no idea what it is but it popped up on Criterion AND Shudder so... that's promising.
Shaun of the Dead - This would be a rewatch. Haven't seen it in a while.
An American Werewolf in London - Another rewatch of an old favourite.
All Hallow’s Eve - I don't know a lot about it except I think it's the first movie with the Art the Clown character who would get the Terrifier franchise. I don't know lot about Terrifier except even harden horror fans find it unsettling but the last two movies were also surprisingly good beyond shock value. I also get the impression that the All Hallow's Eve movies aren't quite as good.

Thoughts?

I've only seen Shaun and Werewolf so I can't vouch for the others. Birthday sounds the most interesting out of the other 3. Abe would probably work if you're in the mood for a popcorn Action-horror movie.

Shaun is always a good time. I’m a bit curious whether the Lincoln flick holds up in any dimension but Adrenaline’s report isn’t encouraging.

Anybody else planning to watch the Svengoolie double features? I'm planning to catch this Saturday's, even if not all of them.

Sadly, slightly more people expressed interest in Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter in my rounds. It was very slight edge but there you go.

I'll talk about that later but for tomorrow.... 2 new films and 4potential rewatches
.All the Colours of the Dark – It’s a giallo and I know nothing about it.

Alien – A classic. Watched it before but am always in the mood. If I watch this, I’ll watch up to Resurrection on subsequent nights.

Nope – Also have seen this before. Love Jordan Peele. It’s probably my least favourite of his movies but I still like what he’s doing a lot.

An American Werewolf in London- Haven’t seen this in forever.

Arrebato – I watched this last year. It was more existential magic realism than conventional horror but at the same time I remember it being good. But I also fell asleep and watched the last act later so I want to give this art film a try.

Bone Cold – NO IDEA what this is. The thumbnail on Tubi and the mere fact it’s on Tubi makes me think it’s a cheapo. Still, you never know. Maybe it’s buried treasure.

I didn't want to make you watch Lincoln but gosh I did wanna hear about it.

Do you like giallos? Have you seen them before?

Curious where your choice lists are coming from... like, it's mostly alphabetical except when it isn't.

Tomorrow I'm having a friend over and he'll probably leave a bit late for me to watch a full movie. Which short feature should I watch.?
Growing fangs – A Disney coming of age short about a teen vampire in puberty.
Bad Guys: Haunted Heist – The movie was pretty decent. And in all honest, I've had fun reading the books to my niece.
Primal Scream – A short doc about why we are scared of dolls
Dikit – A Pilipino horror short and that is all I know. Hehe. Dikit.

Johnny Unusual

(He/Him)
Which of these should I watch tomorrow night?

An American Werewolf in London – Yep, popped up again! It’s getting at least two chances this year!
Alien Vs. Predator – I have not seen these ones, ever. I’m given to understand they aren’t great but maybe I’ll get some cheesy fun out of them.
World War Z – This would be a rewatch. I didn’t care for it much as a whole the first time I saw it, except the “flowing” zombie hordes, which was really better in Train to Busan. That said, I didn’t “HATE” it and am willing to give it a second chance.
Abigail – Man, the preview for this looked really good.
Black Sunday – One of the all-time greats of horror that I remember nothing about. I have seen it but I was sleepy that night and kept nodding off. Want to give it another shot
Scariest Places in the World – A documentary about… the scariest places in the world. Probably dumb but could be fun. I assume the suicide forest of Japan will be there.

I choose one from every streaming service I have. This year I also added Tubi because their selection, aside from being a treasure trove of garbage, has a lot of actual good stuff.

Anyway, Disney + and Criterion I go through alphabetically (since both have smaller pools of horror movies) and Netflix and Prime I pick whatever pops up in their horror/Halloween section first. With Shudder, there's so much I set the list to alphabetize and "eeny meeny miney" my way through the list. And since I'm starting to write Letterboxd reviews again, I'm basically including stuff I've seen before as well as an excuse to write about them (and maybe give some a second chance).

Yep, it's pointlessly convoluted. That's how I roll, baby.
