I know it wouldn't happen, but that title makes me think of the Nemesis system coming to Elden Ring, which would be incredible.

I love (read: am puzzled) by how they had a big 1-year anniversary livestream where everyone expected a DLC announcement, except there wasn't one. And then 3 days later, they announce DLC.

it'd be too easy to react to the announcement if it didn't have a long windup and sudden active frames

One big truth of game advertising: livestreams are always nothingburgers

I am surprised at how unexcited I am right now for DLC? I'll probably come around to the hype train once we get to see some real teases or footage of it. But yeah I guess I feel like I've had my fill of the game and don't want more?

The game was so big that I'm definitely sated, but I'll probably be glad to come back eventually (maybe even by whenever this releases) unless critical reception and word of mouth are extremely bad.

From's DLC is always their best stuff. I don't care about more stuff, but better stuff will be worth checking out.

Show me a Crucible Knight on a Runebear on an Ulcerated Tree Spirit and it'll be like I never left the Lands Between.

I still have builds I want to play, but I don't particularly feel like going through the main game again right now, so this will be a great opportunity to try those builds out while delving through new content. I'll have my golden death sorcerer (or maybe just death), my all-blackflame monk, maybe a pizza-cutter-specializing bonktank...

Right. The DLC seems like a good excuse to try new builds, before I get agitated/nervous and head back into my dual-wielding ways. That sweet, sweet Blood/Frost combo.

I had about a week off from Elden Ring while I was out of town, but I’m back now. I think I’ve explored pretty much all of the lake area except for the academy which I’ve just started on. But I met an iron maiden on wheels and now I’m trapped in volcano manor.

You gotta let it eat you though.
There wasn’t much let about it in my case - it happened almost before I’d realised the enemy was there.

I made the mistake while trapped of not actually resting once I reached a grace point - I thought activating it would be enough and didn’t want to respawn the enemies in the area while I explored some more, which led me to a one-way path to a boss fight. I wanted to warp out to keep my runes, but it turns out you have to rest to untrap yourself so I had to take on the boss which I wasn’t able to beat. More runes down the drain. Oh well.

I’ve now finished the academy - the boss at the end I found surprisingly easy. I beat it on the first try despite taking way longer than I should have figuring out how to damage it. I died a lot more to the guard of the elevator leading to the boss.

That elevator guard is notorious for being a massive jerkwad and a roadblock for a lot of people. He's really good at parrying D:

Yeah the crit after a parry would kill me from full HP. In the end I beat him by switching back to my old flail, which can’t be parried.

It's definitely not a welcoming place, no. All sorts of fun poison and rot to be found there, not to mention the giant beasts...

I have an anchor I can hit things with now. Putting a lot of points in strength so I can dual wield a big anchor and fuckhead's big axe, which I also just got, because I killed him.

I was trying to get through the canyon in Caelid, saw what looked like a lift, so I went back to Siofra river to find the lower end of it, not that it did me much good - the great jar’s champions can one-shot me so I guess I’ll come back later. Anyway, Siofra has been a welcome break from all the rot, though I think I’ve done what I can there for now. Cheesed the boss - I jumped to a nearby platform out of its reach and fired about eighty arrows at it. Took out the more hidden boss in the area with lightning spears while my skeleton soldier militiamen distracted it.

I’ve mixed up my offensive options a little - I’m now using lightning spear instead of flame sling, and I’ve also realised I can hold the button to charge the incantations up a bit, and I’ve been trying out the frozen needle for melee. I hadn’t realised it could be used to attack while still holding up the shield, which is pretty useful, but the main thing has been the heavy attack, which is a free short range projectile. Siofra has a lot of slow enemies who I can fire the shot at and walk away from. It’s a bit slow, but it works.

For the record, you can do this with spears, great spears, thrusting swords (like the needle) and great thrusting swords. So the pokey bois, basically. Also, in keeping with Souls tradition, if you hit an enemy with a thrust attack while they're attacking, it does extra damage, so a phalanx build of sorts (stabbing from behind a shield) can be used to good effect at times. I believe there's a talisman that boosts that extra damage as well!

Yessss. Embrace the unga bunga within, and follow the path of BONK

The Bonk is the truth. It's why faith goes so well with strength. It is in service to the  Bonk.

I need to play some more Elden Ring! I kinda binged it for like a month straight on release and haven't touched it since, but I'm kinda stoked for the DLC.

I’m back in Caelid and not progressing quickly. I went through the town of sorcery and up to a big dragon on a hill that gave me about three levels for stabbing it in the tail repeatedly. Next to that is a fort full of bats, some of which are easy and others of which release clouds of poison and have some kind of scream attack that seems to ignore my shield. I made several attempts at clearing the first room of the fort and got pretty close before giving up and going back to the swamp, where Commander O’Neil has proven resistant to my efforts so far.

fort faroth feels like a lesson in running past stuff, hahaha. it's just not worth fighting all those bats...the guys on the upper level can be kind of awful to deal with too but at least they're a bit more manageable. on my second character i just ran through in one minute to pick up the two (highly) relevant items and then die out
