That was sure a performance by Castillo.

Also glad to see another chapter in The Legend of Big Dumper.

Fucking dying. Amazing comeback. We're going to be talking about this game for decades.

That was some game. Sipping champagne right now. I'm not expecting to win the series against Houston, but if we do it'd be flippin' sweet.

That was the most heartbreaking game if baseball I have ever watched. Happy for you, Seattle fans, but very sad right now.

On a similar note, I really hope George Springer is okay. That was terrifying to watch.

The Mets tied for the third best record in MLB and they've been bounced before the NLDS. Sports are so cruel.

Cardinals are starting to make a tradition of putting away the bats when the season ends regardless of postseason. pretty disappointing and now I get to hear a bunch of dumb fans talk about goldy and arenado being choke artists or whatever.

Been pretty good post season so far beside that though

Looks like Springer's injury is not too terrible. That's a relief. We were jumping up and down at the tie runs and then immediately stopped and all started feeling sick when we realized what had happened because it looked like he might be paralyzed or worse. Hoping he has a speedy recovery.

The Mariners got swept in 3 games and every one of those losses was extremely excruciating.

I do think the wildfire smoke affected the flight path of the hits. There were a couple that would have been home runs otherwise. Also the ump had a really weird strike zone that screwed over both teams and I think he unwittingly helped extend the game as well.

I was trying not to say that it would make the balls drop quicker for obvious reasons, but couldn't figure out how to word it.

Humidity can affect how far a baseball travels, so I'd assume dense smoke would as well

If it would affect a ball, we're talking maybe milimeters at best in the grand scheme of things. You begin to see real differences when the atmospheric pressure goes up or down in big ways. A baseball hit in Denver where the air is only about 82% the pressure vs sea level will make a ball go about 10% further. But the air pressure up in Seattle today is maybe only like, 0.1% higher than somewhere with a similar climate like SF where there's no smoke.

I can see extremely high humidity affecting a ball by merit of if you've got a really thick marine layer - you've got a ball hitting floating water droplets in the air that have a much higher mass than individual microscopic molecules of whatever is in smog, but water will also stick to a ball adding to its mass in a way that smoke won't.

I do think smoke inhalation would have a bigger effect on the athletes ability to perform at their best. But any of these situations, it's also a case of where both teams are equally disadvantaged by playing in the same scenario. If the smoke was affecting the Mariner's balls, it was also affecting the Astro's to the same degree, so it's a neutral event that can basically be cancelled out versus other factors that likely affected the game's outcome a lot more.

I feel ya tho. Sucks when you go 3-out in the playoffs, but I think you can be proud of your team. Close losses and young talent is a good recipe for further success.

My theory was about why it took so long for anyone to score, considering how many hits by both teams came sooo close to being homers. It was more just an "I wonder if this may have been a thing" than saying for certain it was a factor.

I do wish the game had been postponed or at least continued the next day once it hit extra innings. The air quality was in the high 100s and the announcers said it wouldn't be postponed unless the air quality got over 200, but I could feel my breathing start to get a little labored just walking the short distance from work to home yesterday, so having players and fans out in that for 6 hours was extremely irresponsible.

Is it really surprising we’d hate a division rival more?
Especially considering everything the Astros have done to us since they've gone to the AL. They've easily surpassed the Angels as the Mariners' most hated rival by this point.

It's been long enough since the Yankees have had any meaningful success that I currently find them rather benign. Meanwhile, the Astros still have that cheating stink about them.

I wasn't exactly expressing surprise as much as I was expressing my distaste for my (erstwhile since I'm not a Red Sox fan really anymore) team's division rival.
