Looks like they're gonna make it. They're in a good position because most of the other wild card contenders will be beating each other up in the last few weeks.
As a guy whose team lost a year of Buster Posey's prime to a base collision, I welcome all efforts to protect baseball players from themselves and each other when interacting at the bases.
It would be cool if he tied or passed Maris on my birthday.

The media is enabling the silly steroids-invalidate-records crowd by treating his chase of a league record with the same attention they would if it was the overall major league record. Still, an awesome accomplishment.

I don't know, this many home runs is rare enough that I think it's deserving of the attention even if it's not the league record. Albert Pujols (deservedly) got a ton of attention for 700 even though he wasn't the first guy to do it. Only 4 other guys have hit 61 and it hasn't happened in a long time.
Also, the fact that Judge is having one of the greatest offensive seasons of all time, flat out, is also contributing. And in a down year for home runs - he's leading the next guy by 19!

And he's got a good chance at getting the Triple Crown. Which like, isn't that important, but is still wildly impressive.
I think I do take Adrenaline 's point here though - the "record" chase shouldn't be the showcase, that should be Judge's season overall. Even in the weeklong "drought" between 60 and 61 he was like the best hitter in baseball

People talk about steroids but an ignored factor is expansion, which explains 1961 too. Both that year when Mantle and Maris were chasing 60 and the period from 1998-2001 when a bunch of guys in the NL were hitting 60+, the league had recently expanded, affecting the talent pool. There is no recent expansion here, so Judge stands far above the rest of the league despite not coming close to the biggest numbers of the late 90s surge. Put in context, according to wRC+, Barry Bonds from 2001-2004 is the only player since 1961 to have a better hitting season relative to his peers.
I doubt he'll hit 11 home runs today, but who knows.

As a Sacramento Kings fan, I'm incredibly happy for Mariners fans. I hope y'all have something built for the long run and this is the first of many. And at the same time, I'm pissed because now the dubious honor of longest playoff drought in NA pro sports now goes to my team.
