@Bongo do you still have that prediction sheet that we filled out a while back?

I'm pretty sure that my predictions were terrible and I doubt I'd do any better now. I'll be happy if one of the last two characters is someone I'm at least pretty familiar with, or someone who is interesting and completely out of left field. If it's, like, Fortnite guy and a Pokemon I've never heard of I'll be disappointed. Ah well, I'll hope for the best and expect the worst.

I'm neutral on whether they announce one or two characters. I only really expect one. It would be cool if they sneak an extra character in via an echo fighter or one last bonus DLC character, but I think a third season pass would be way too much.

There will be a Pokemon, probably Cinderace. I would love Arle Puyopuyo or a new Zelda rep, but I also feel Fortnite Jonesy in my soul.

While I'm hoping for Rillaboom* just so we can have at least one final form Grass starter on the roster for once in lieu of a third final form Fire starter, I would still be cool with Cinderace. Fútbol bunny could make for a pretty amazing moveset.

* Also Rillaboom vs. Donkey Kong on the drums would be pretty awesome.

If it's really Jonesy Fortnite then I will be that Smash fan that spontaneously combusts in a fit of laughter and rage.

My most wanted Gen 8 starter is Inteleon but really what I want is either a Mystery Dungeon rep or an Ultra Beast. Those aren't happening tho

This is such a weird thing in my own mind, because I kind of acknowledge we will never be "here" again.

Right from the start, Ultimate said "everyone is here", and we didn't have to have announcements like in the Brawl and For days of "here's a new announcement... It's Captain Falcon!" Or Lucas. Or FE Roy. Like, I very much expect the next Smash Bros to be a complete reboot, because this roster is unwieldly to the point of parody, and I cannot imagine all the licensing issues that would be involved if the next Smash had to have Cloud, Mega Man, and Simon Belmont again. And the hype of a new Smash announcement gets me every time! I love that we are currently in a zone where we know it's not going to be "Luigi", but someone completely new to the franchise (at least as a fighter, still could see a trophy or mii-upgrade). I don't see that happening with "Smash 6", because an announcement of "Wow! Cloud and Sephiroth are coming back in this brand new engine!" is still going to be like "yeah, we did that already."

I want Sakurai and the Smash team to be able to rest and say "this is it". But from a purely selfish perspective? I want to see infinity seasons for Smash Ultimate from here until the end of time.

Anyway, I'm going to keep voting KOS-MOS until it happens, because, clearly, Nintendo is going to announce two Xeno characters in a row. Because the fans demand it.

It's going to be the new main character from SMTV with the Demi-Fiend as an alt.

That's fair. I feel like Ultimate bringing back all previous characters, adding 6 great new characters (Ridley and King K. Rool feeling like real long shots in particular), and adding 6 solid DLC characters was enough for me. I even came around on Byleth after the initial reveal; they're up there with Robin as the two best FE characters for me. The second pass has been a lot less interesting to me, and I don't feel like there are many more characters I want in the game who would be likely to be added from here on out. So maybe it's selfish, but I feel like a whole new pass isn't needed.

Part of the reason is that the game feels overwhelming already. I played the first three Smash Bros. a ton. So, I know everyone in the above picture up through Wolf very well. I had Smash for 3DS without DLC, so I'm decent with everyone up through Duck Hunt, but I mostly played against the computer. Everyone from Ryu on is new to me in this game, and I just took an ~18 month break from multiplayer due to the pandemic. I haven't even picked up the second pass yet. There are so many new characters right now. I want it to slow down so I can get good at them and feel like I have a handle on the entire cast.

Anyway, if you're looking to kill some time before the direct, this video is a fun way to revisit the roster.

Hey, Tekken finally made it in. It's not my favorite franchise (I think the last one I played was Tekken 2), but Namco only had one character before this and Tekken is definitely their most popular series after Pac Man. I really don't know that much about Kazuya, but he looks fun to play. I'm guessing that his specials have the devil effect.

Anyway that... sure looks like Kaz. I used to play a good bit of Tekken and they've got most of his signature moves in there. And dropping Smash characters into volcanoes is always a good time. And is Heihachi is a boss or just decoration?

Heihachi (and, I assume, other Tekken cameos) appear to be hanging out in the background of Kazuya's stage like the people in King of Fighters Stadium.

I misread the name at first and thus spent most of the trailer wondering "why would Kazuma Kiryu dump all these guys in a volcano and why is he shirtless (not complaining)?"

I’m not as excited for the Tek Man from Tekken as I have been for most other reveals, but there’s certainly a level of logic to it; there’s a weird amount of cross-pollination between Tekken and Nintendo.

I also hope this means Kirby adapts the Devil Gene when he copies him

I don't know anything about this character but his disdain at the Noodle Lady's arm getting tangled was amusing, and A+ having Kirby just fly away in the background.

I went ahead and bought Pass 2. I've been pretty down on it, and I've been saying that I would pick it up when they announced a character I was excited about, but instead it reached a critical mass of new Smash content and I gave in. Even though I don't especially care about these characters or series, Smash is fun to play and I guess a bunch of new characters is enough for me.

Min Min - She seems like the best fit for the series out of the characters in this pass. Having her normal and special moves be mirrors is unique, and she's really easy to play as. I just use the dragon and ring a bunch until opponents are over 75% or so then bring out the wrecking ball. I clicked with her quickly, and I like her stage a lot too.

Steve - I had no idea what I was doing the first few times I played as him, and I'm still kind of lost after a few days. Managing mining for materials, upgrading his equipment, and figuring out his weird moves is a lot. He seems like the weirdest addition, though I think his stage is wonderful. For whatever reason it makes sense to me that Smash characters would wander into Minecraft world when fighting, even though his character seems out of place.

Sephiroth - he's kind of a hilarious and wild character to add. I can't help but think of the numerous XXSephirothXX screen names when I see him. They did a great job making him fun. his neutral special and forward special spells are great to play around with, and he's very mobile and has great reach. His stage is just Battlefield with a movie from FFVII playing in the background, so it's easily the worst new stage, but it did retroactively improve the soundtrack for Midgar.

Pyra/Mythra - Terrible character designs, but pretty fun to play as. It's weird that the game defaults to starting as Pyra, because I feel you really want to be Mythra until opponents have a bit of damage, and then finish them off as Pyra. Swapping between characters is their only complication and it's been used a few times before. Otherwise they're just kind of flashy sword fighters, and they are very easy to pick up. I do like their stage a lot. It continues Xenoblade's pattern of beautiful environmental design to contrast its awful looking characters.

Kazuya - I would have picked Yoshimitsu, but I get it. Tekken is popular, and Kazuya is an important character from that series. He's not for me, but I'm not complaining at all. His stage looks cool, I like the breakable walls a lot. I've heard that he's likely to be one of the more complex characters, so I'm hoping he's not too tough to pick up.

That leaves one character to go.

I've been copying down predictions from all over. Here's a big list of speculation that I've put together:

My favorites:

Urbosa - Zelda is a huge series and has a new game coming out. Half of the Zelda characters in Smash are clones.
Ring Fit Trainee - A new series with a strong protagonist. seems like a good fit.
Tetriminos - I love the idea of ending on an abstract character from out of left field.
Hanafuda Cards - even more out there and historically relevant.
Advance Wars - It doesn't even have an assist trophy anymore! Feels like an obvious omission. Series started on Famicom.
The Chosen Undead - Souls is super influential, and they would be easy to adapt.
Ryu Hayabusa - Popular NES series, with a modern redesign, and is in fighting games already.
Doc Louis or Mr. Sandman - Smash is way too white.
Bub & Bob - Classic characters who are out of left field. I have fond memories of playing Bubble Bobble.
Phoenix Wright - a fun character. Seems like a great fit.

Would be good additions:

Diskun - would be confusing outside of Japan, but it's a cute character.
Mike Jones - would be confusing outside of North America, but he's a good character.
Rhythm Heaven - This keeps popping up. I'm sure it would be interesting.
Dixie Kong - She seems like an obvious omission (though DK/Rare has a lot of new characters already).
Game Builder Garage Robot - Another new series, and the robot is just cute.
Rillaboom - a Grass starter from the new Pokemon. Not exciting, but would make a lot of sense.
Geno - I don't really want him, but it would be fun to see the reaction.
Dr. Robotnik - Bayo and Joker are kind of bland for Sega. They could use another cartoony character.
Phantasy Star - Alis would be neat
Toad - Toad is fine.
Waluigi - Waluigi is fine
Crash Bandicoot - Crash is fine. I saw someone suggest a Mii costume that matches the one from old ads.
Rayman - Nintendo is pretty close with Ubisoft.
Contra - Classic Nintendo characters
Famicom Detective Club - I have no idea, but the remakes were popular.
Klonoa - Good character design, but pretty obscure.
Sora - seems super unlikely.
Sol Badguy - more fighting game representation.
SMTV protagonist - seems too late to add them in, but he has a cool design.

The rest of these are all normal humans, and they make up most of the DLC characters already. It would be nice to end on something more weird. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being one of these:

Jill Valentine
Chun Li
Doom Slayer
Master Chief
The Dragonborn
Lara Croft
Dante
Monster Hunters
Altair
Tracer
Kratos
Prince of Persia
Scorpion

Who did I miss?

I'm still rooting for Pom Pom but given that Super Mario 3D World Deluxe came and went with just a few spirits in Smash for the new Bowser's Fury expansion I'm not counting on her getting in. Also we already got a new Mario with Piranha Plant, so...

Still, the 3D Land/World branch of the Mario series could use a rep and we have less ninjas than sword people in Smash. Be nice to have a non-Bowser Koopa who isn't bolted to a vehicle.

Yeah, Pom Pom would be a good choice. In addition to Piranha Plant, Bowser Jr./Koopa Kids already fill the Mario Miniboss role. Smash is often surprising though.

If we're going with such a "ha ha look everyone's dream fighting game mega crossover happened and it's freaking Smash Bros." vibe, Mortal Kombat is still out in the cold.

But in my heart of hearts, I'm curious if there's a new Fire Emblem out soon because we're about due for that bit of trollery to strike again.

I think the Scrimblo Bimblo likers deserve another lovable scrunko to finish out the pass. Crash and Rayman would both fit great.
