I've been interested in XBC2 because I loved XBC1 and had heard mostly good stuff about it, but... uh... maybe I'll pass on that after all.

I played Smash with my girlfriend recently. Hadn't played in over a year - I had Piranha Plant but that might have been the only DLC character I had so far. I was shaky enough on fundamentals that I could hardly tell the difference between any of the characters - they all did smashes and other stuff. My girlfriend had never played at all before. (Don't worry, we did team battles against the CPU.) She did take to Byleth though, and I think Lucina a bit as well. I'm still slightly tempted to get the next pack, if for no other reason than, hey, it's Sephiroth?

The DLC characters mostly have mechanics or features that make them unlike anyone else. Joker had the Rebellion gauge which fills up as he takes damage and summons his persona, Arsene. Banjo has a great move called Wonderwing which beats most stuff, but can only use it five times per stock, for example. I'd say the packs are worth it, definitely.

They go above and beyond with the DLC fighters to make sure you're not getting just another roster-filler. If you're nearly doubling the price of the game they want it to be worthwhile. They all (except Piranha Plant, who's a special case) have some extra sparkle, even having a unique effect among their DLC-exclusive spirits. Their designs all push the envelope of what's possible in the framework of Smash. On average they're high-tier as well, though not so much that it's a "pay to win" situation.

(Well, I heard that the Japanese scene considers Min Min broken, but it's hard to tell. Joker is strong, but he's not the strongest; rather, it was just that the best player in the world mained him.)

It's not like the base roster doesn't have unique weirdos too, though. The most extra fighter on the roster is still Kirby, for instance, whose Copy ability means he has like an order of magnitude more moves than anybody else.

Pyra and Mythra is coming out today, alongside several Monster Hunter Mii costumes and Arthur.

Patch notes for version 11.0.0 includes minor buffs for Captain Falcon, Pichu, Ganondorf, Dedede, Little Mac, Mii Gunner, Byleth, Steve, and Sephiroth; minor nerfs for Zero Suit Samus, Wario, Diddy Kong, Palutena, Joker, and Min Min; and a global mechanical adjustment for lots of fighters.

Pyra/Mythra, or Mythra/Pyra if you switch which one's in front, feels really fun to me. This morning's video really doesn't do justice to how fast Mythra is, and Pyra has great power and range on all her finishers. Both their projectiles come with significant drawbacks, and they have neither counters nor reflects, so they're really pure rushdown fighters, and the name of the game when fighting them seems to be to keep them out of your face however you can, either with zoning (against Mythra) or pokes (against Pyra).

Also, the release of costume parts for Arthur and various Monster Hunters invalidates a few more predictions from among the bets we made a few months ago. I've taken the liberty of indicating correct predictions, and predictions which were disproven by Mii Fighter DLC, but I haven't removed any that are based on post-launch spirits.

I am enjoying Pyra and Mythra's play style a ton but man these character designs are atrocious. Mythra is much better but Pyra makes me shake my head. At least some of the alts do a better job at being tights than the default color does.

I think it's safe to say that the best thing out of this whole update is Yuzo Koshiro turning this Xenoblade 2 music into Gradius music.

It's not exactly 1:1, but Pyra/Mythra feels to me like less like Zelda/Sheik or Pokemon Trainer, and more like if you somehow glued Star Fox and Star Wolf together, and could switch between the two. They're very similar "clones", but with wildly different stats, and generally different special attacks. And, like, I love it? It's really fun? I kind of want a character that is just Ganondorf/Captain Falcon in the same manner as these two.

I really enjoy playing as Pyra/Mythra, which continues the trend of Smash characters being reverse proportionate to how much I thought they would be cool in Smash. Pyra/Mythra really wasn't my bag (Xeno connections not withstanding), but they might be my absolute favorite-to-play DLC character, and favorite newbie since, like, Brawl. Meanwhile, despite my best efforts, I still can't enjoy playing as Mega Man or Ridley. Such is life...

(Also, I need to find a good color scheme for Pyra, because your average Smash battle already has too much red going on...)

I love following Yuzo Koshiro on twitter, and he's always posting stuff about his synthesizer setups, and I can't imagine anything else but him putting this together.

The fact that they have similar movesets makes the transformation gimmick work much better than Zelda/Sheik. Part of it is the universal system change where stance changing is super fast, so you can do it in midair. But the real issue is: Zelda and Sheik were both full characters with totally different game plans, and rarely encountered a situation where they wanted to do what the other could do. Pokemon Trainer solves this problem because each of the three pokemon has weaknesses that the next one can compensate for. Pyra and Mythra, meanwhile, tend to want to do the same thing (hit 'em with your sword), but sometimes need speed and sometimes need power. In that sense, fittingly, Shulk would be the more important precedent.

I'm here to talk about the most important thing: the Arthur Mii costume is amazing and it really looks like Arthur from Ghosts 'n' Goblins is running around on the screen there. I would have preferred him to be a proper newcomer, but I'm not going to complain about a costume that good on a character I already know how to play.

Oh, I wasn't clear in my previous post. I do have the first pack, I just hadn't booted up Smash to actually download a new fighter since before Joker had been released. I have a... complicated relationship with Smash. I frankly don't have much desire to keep playing unless my girlfriend wants more practice. And yet I still somehow feel like I should get the second fighter pass, anyway.

Another thing that wasn't clear was that, while I'm aware that each character is unique and has some weird defining trait, it'd been so long that I was still playing at the level that those traits didn't really matter - I only had a grasp of the basics anymore. Like, I played Hero and simply did not know what Magic was about or how to do it, so I was just jumping around and attacking/smashing.

Hero's gimmick is one of the more opaque ones. His down special shows you four random (but not equally probable) options from a list of 21 spells. To make them easier to learn, most of them have frame data such that the time to use them, and the best response to them, is basically the same as one of his regular moves, or are not attacks at all. But there are some that have really drastic effects, like Magic Burst, Kamikazee, Bounce, and Hocus Pocus. All of his special moves consume MP, which is recovered passively or by landing non-magic attacks.

Some venues ban Hero because language barrier issues might make it difficult for opponents (who, after all, can also look at the magic menu while selecting) to counter-play.

The secret to playing well as Hero is to believe in the heart of the cards.

Having not played Smash with a real person in years, I thought I’d give the online mode a shot this weekend...

There is really no point in worrying about GSP is there? I’m either getting jobbed by people who should be playing elite smash but are still working on getting Pyra/Mythra in there, or I’m doing well but one of the people I’m playing against rage quits, nullifying any benefit it would have had on my score.

Smash's ranking system is difficult to take seriously due to the ragequitting problem, and the matchmaking is highly distorted whenever a new fighter is added.

Who is a favorable matchup for Little Mac? Sephiroth maybe.

Sephiroth is a fantastic Mac Matchup. Just, a wonderfully fun round to play.

Pyra and Mythra? Just a sea of endless Side-Bs.

If you mean Photon Edge specifically, I suggest you shield it and punish with down smash. Her animation during the move doesn't match her hurtbox, which is simply moving forward at a fixed speed. Depending on where she used it, she might end up slightly to the left or slightly to the right of you, but down smash will cover both options.

Anyone who lets Little Mac get up close and have Better Stats is a good matchup for him, and Sephiroth is a big slow boy who depends on his large hitboxes. One mistimed swing and it's dickpunch city.

With the E3 Direct tomorrow I'm wondering if anybody has any last second predictions to make. Will they reveal both remaining characters, or just one (or even zero)? Will it be someone any of us predicted? Will it be a very popular choice? Will the character cause some segment of the Smash fanbase to self-immolate from sheer anger? (survey says yes)

Still holding out hope for a Doomguy/Reimu double reveal, though I suddenly have an inexplicable itch for some character (any character) that wants to kill Chaos.
