The Retrogame Bubble Thread - "that's worth HOW MUCH now?!"

Edit: I don't think I'm showing my wife pricecharting.com, it's strangely alarming. Rule of Rose and Michigan: Report From Hell are two dodgy titles I got cheap years ago and their prices are just crazy
As fun as looking at pricecharting is, I'm reminded of the Comics Buyers Guides in my youth and my dad constantly being asked "How much is this issue worth?" It's worth what somebody will pay you for it, regardless of what any guide or website says. My copy of Earthbound (no box, but with strategy guide/manual) might go for $400 on eBay...or it might sit there languishing until I drop the price to $100 and it gets snapped up by a reseller. Just like my copy of Young Justice #1.

It appears my sealed copy of Persona 2: Eternal Punishment has risen in value enough for me to sell it. Graded ones are going for $1,000+, but I'm not waiting however many months that process will take, so I'll probably list it with a Buy It Now of $750 and bidding starting at $500.

Now's the time to cash out on the stuff I have left, it appears.

Even those PS TV's that were being clearanced out at $20 are going for over $100 used on Ebay. It's a good time to cash out. I wonder how much of this current inflation is driven by bitcoin earnings and GME sells?

Pricecharting seems useful for looking at trends for a particular game over the last several years, and for me especially checking to see if a game I want to buy has been expensive for years or just had a jump last March.

It’s definitely flawed and inexact, though, and probably not too useful as a selling tool.

All y’all looking at eBay, you’re sorting by sold items, right? Because I’m seeing plenty of junk getting listed at like $400 and never selling.

Kazin

Yep, sold items on eBay. I don't really look at Pricecharting because as you say, it's a better tool for seeing long term trends, rather than what is selling in the past few months and for how much. Imo, anyway.

Just gonna point you towards Suikoden V and Wild Arms Alter Code F.
I just sold my copy of Alter Code F for a fair bit yeah. I've also got most of the RPGs for the PS1 and PS2 rattling around in boxes, and I'm sorta terrified of finding out how much some of these are going to be worth.

I checked (on pricecharting.com) the other day and some of the common PS1 RPGs I have are not worth all that much so it might be the same for all of yours - except for the rare ones.

It seems like most of my PS1 games aren't worth that much (except for one of them). So I guess I'll keep my small collection for the time being.

Unless someone here can claim to have found a NISB copy of Little Samson sitting in their (deceased) cool uncle's attic, I think we have a winner. Holy shit.
PAL Panzer Dragoon Saga goes for $557.37, I've got it. It's amazing, possibly not half a grand amazing though

Yeah, the commons are still really cheap, like the Final Fantasy games or Chrono Cross.

As far as PriceCharting goes, it's relatively accurate under the circumstances, given that it's only using sold eBay listings, but you will occasionally see listings that are incorrect or don't capture pertinent details of why a game sold for less or more. (Label damage, for one.) It's also probably less accurate for games that don't sell terribly often.

Sprite

(He/Him/His)
Yeah, I haven’t a clue what Evolution on NGPC is worth, because no one’s sold it on eBay in the past 30 days, Pricecharting is all over the place and has like one sale a year tracked, and the only listings are for $750+ with no one biting. I should probably give up all hope of ever owning that game again, even after this bubble bursts.

Sarge

Yeah, I've definitely given up on some games, barring stumbling across them in a bit of sheer luck. I did recapture all the NES games I owned and traded away at one time, but I did that a while back. It'd set me back a whole lot more money now if I tried to do that.

Decided to check where Snatcher is currently sitting. I paid $80-ish for it when I still lived with my parents (which means AT LEAST 16 years ago). Original case, no manual. It was part of a lot with a bunch of totally random Genesis games. Like, the seller was clearly a parent cleaning out the attic or whatever. Disc-only now goes for about $600, complete just over $1,000. So, of course, I checked eBay for manuals. People are selling fucking REPRODUCTION manuals for valuable games for like $50. Part of me wants one to make it look better when I pull it off the shelf, but $50 for a repro?! GTFO, man.

But that does have me thinking, some games get real expensive based on minor things included with them. To wit, the Genesis port of The Punisher (which is not a terribly good port) originally came with a temporary tattoo of the Punisher skull. Look at completed auctions on eBay. Loose, it's about a hundo. With box and manual, about three hundo. With the tattoo as well? OVER FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS. That's a temporary tattoo worth WELL OVER ONE HUNDRED AMERICAN DOLLARS.

Yeah, that's why my mind boggled at a complete copy of Pokemon Blue. Loose carts are like $25-ish, but complete it's over $200. That's some expensive paper!

Also, yeah, not the greatest port.

Similarly I picked up Rockin Kats at TooManyGames for about 25 bucks a few years ago. It didn't have the original box (it had some generic box that clearly came from the rental store the game had been acquired from), but it had the game, manual and a decent sized poster the game originally game with. Now the game goes for about 80 - 100 dollars loose, 200-ish complete, and well over four hundred dollars with the poster. This is of course just based on what people have sold it for in the past though - most list the game as 'complete' without the poster, probably not even realizing there was one, and you very rarely see it appear on ebay at all.

On that note...

Neo Dragon's Wild is a video poker game. It isn't very good. I was feeling kind of deflated following this auction yesterday because no way can I justify dropping that much money on a good game, let alone a bad one. I resigned myself to just get the Japanese version and let that count for my ambitions of a complete US NGPC collection.

Then I popped into VideoGamesNewYork today and

Is the box and manual really worth that much? The store wasn't low-balling, they had a predictable mark-up on most games. Puzzle Link 2 was $30 and I paid $8 for it (though honestly that game is worth $30). I know, I know, the answer is that "games are worth what people pay" and there's a certain level of chaos to all this. It was just a surprising thing to see over 24 hours, is all.

Speaking of surprising...

This has to be fake, right? The listing didn't even have a picture of the product, and then later another listing showed up for the same amount which did have a picture. Are eBay ghost sales a thing?

I will definitely be getting the Japanese version if that holds.

I have no idea about that poker game specifically, but I would imagine the boxes are fairly rare, so it probably is the box and manual driving the price up. I've been following Game & Watch auctions in the past few weeks, and when people have the boxes and manuals for those, the price usually doubles (though curiously, there's a few Donkey Kong IIs up for sale on eBay right now that are only like $50 more with the box. Meanwhile I don't care about the boxes, I just want the games!). In any case - congrats on finding an affordable copy!

It's generally just the box art that gets hit with the ugly stick, not the box itself! The NGPC games are possibly a bit over packed here but they look amazing as a collection.

I guess I priced it right, because my 32X and 5 games just sold for $405. Holy crap lol

Rollin' in the dough there now! :) Seriously, I'm impressed. I honestly hope this doesn't become the norm, though. There are still a few things I'd like to get, but these prices are just killing my cheap self.

Kazin

Well, I spent about that amount on Game & Watches over the past few weeks, so I like to think of it as trading a 32X for about seven Game & Watches (a vast improvement imo lol)

Oh, I have no doubt on that number. I really should collect all my duplicates and see about selling them. I don't think I'd get a ton out of it, but I could probably get enough to grab a Neo Geo system, which seems like a fair trade. :) (Too bad those flash carts are so blasted expensive!)

While I hesitate to call them retro, some DS games are getting pretty expensive. Solatorobo, Dragon Quest VI and Castlevania Order of Ecclesia can go for quite a bit lately.

The DS and several of its games are over 15 years old now, so I'd say it's fairly retro, weird as it is to call it that...
