The Retrogame Bubble Thread - "that's worth HOW MUCH now?!"

Oh shit, and I forgot about how the Silent Hill games all sell for ridiculous prices now too, especially the first three. Madness.

That's interesting. I wondered if PS2 stuff would ever get truly crazy. PS2 games are kinda like bronze age comics- by then, the kinds of games that get pricey later were hitting their target audiences more effectively and in greater quantity

See, I'm glad I made this thread, because I'm learning how far out of the loop I've been since I stopped collecting. Silent Hill 2 for $100+?! That game was everywhere over ten years ago! lol

@Kazin: I've never been to one, and yeah, I'd love to make it. I suspect I'd have an absolute blast. I'm just not close to any. :(

Sometimes you gotta TRAVEL! I've been pretty fortunate to be close to one in the places I've lived (MGC in Milwaukee, MAGFest in DC... the Grand Ole Gameroom Expo was fun in 2019, but not very big, still a good time), but I travelled to TooManyGames several times and back to the MGC, uh, twice, I think since leaving MKE? (I also went to several PAX Easts, but that's a little different, and not something I'm all that interested in anymore. It's like LineCon, the con where you spend all day in line!)

There's apparently something in Atlanta? That's probably the closest for me. Five hours isn't too bad a trip. Oh, and Grand Ole Gameroom Expo is in Nashville? That's about five hours as well, so another option.

My real problem is that I just don't travel much, but after all this pandemic stuff, it's got me wanting to get out. I've also got a buddy of mine I'd like to finally visit out in Georgia. Just waitin' for that vaccine...

Yeah, I've been to some PAX Easts, and I'm over them at this point too. Partially because I'm pretty much into retro games for the most part, at this point, and they aren't so much a focus there as new stuff.

That's bananas! In part because that game is bad.
All Godzilla games are bad. This one isn't the worst. I think it is mostly just rare and that seems to be the only thing that matters once people move from getting games they want to getting games that are collectible.

I've never been to a PAX but I did go to the Portland Retro Gaming Expo and it was fantastic. I'd love to do it again.

Just gonna point you towards Suikoden V and Wild Arms Alter Code F. Also that one obscenely pricey game about Tezuka’s Dororo But Edgy.

Anyone looked at Chibi-Robo’s prices lately? Good grief.

Okay now do Gatcha Force.
I passed on that game so many times. Is it even any good??? I don't know anything about it lol

EDIT: At least Phantasy Star Online Ep III: C.A.R.D. Revolution isn't worth anything, the world hasn't gone COMPLETELY mad

My copy of Great Greed for the original Gameboy is one that’s getting up there too. $80 just for the cart according to Pricecharting.

I'm annoyed that I returned my copy of Blood Will Tell. It had some label damage, and I had some read issues... but just having a copy, and potentially resurfacing, would have been something else.

I'm only missing a few PS2 RPGs, when I just got tired of keeping up with the releases at the very end. Which, of course, was the time to actually stay on top of things, but whatevs. I finally managed to get hold of Mana Khemia 2 and Ar Tonelico 2, at any rate. Missing that Sakura Wars game, though.

Also, seriously, over $100 for Chibi-Robo, disc-only? I don't even think I got my copy that long ago...

@Ixo: Oh, wow, a copy of Great Greed. I always wanted that game. (Actually, I pretty much wanted any RPG.)

Oh dang, I never would have guessed! Good thing I still have my copies of 2 and 3. But I should've bought 4 years ago back when I first thought of doing so. I'm gonna guess Konami's treatment of the franchise over the decades might be a contributing factor to their price bumps...

I sold my copy of Solatorobo with the soundtrack to Sprite a few years back for I think $75? Anyway, don't look up what it sells for now.
Oh, I wanna know - I still have a copy. *looks*

It's a game that I wanted to like more than I did. Everything in the game is really charming, but the basic action is just too simple. I definitely wouldn't recommend dropping that kind of cash on it.

One I wish I'd gotten my hands on is The Dark Spire. I remember when GameStop dropped their copies to $5. I drove across town to snag their copy, and... someone beat me to it. Drats.

*sigh*

I want a PSP Go, even though I don't need one at all. Those things are just so nice looking

Oh geez, The Dark Spire - that game went for nothing the entirety of the DSs life. I bought one for like $10 new and felt like I was paying too much lol

It’s interesting how expensive trying to collect PlayStation horror is. Not just Silent Hill either. Kuon, Haunting Ground, D... Fatal Frame is cheaper on the PS2 than on the Xbox at least.

One game I'm surprised has not gone up much at all is Legend of Legacy. Maybe it isn't old enough?

Yeah, my guess is that it's just obscure enough to not have shot up yet. It'll happen, though, just a question of when. I don't think it got a port anywhere else, either, did it? I know The Alliance Alive did, though, so I expect that one to stay a bit deflated in value in comparison. But what do I know? If I could predict which game would be a gold mine... well, I'd probably just waste more money. :(

@Tegan: I was one of the ones that balked at the PSP Go back in the day. No disc drive? Forget y'all! But given how hackable it is, it would have been quite the nice investment. That looks really, really cool. I also hear they have nice screens on them.

That explains why the docks go for so much nowadays, I was wondering why anyone would care about a charging dock or whatever.

I like my blue PSP 3000, which can do TV-out through component cables, but it'd be nice if I could bluetooth a controller to it and-I do not need a PSP Go, stop it, brain

Does the TV-out look better than the one on the PSP-2000? I never could get the sort of crispness out of it that I wanted.

You're going to have one in the mail by this time tomorrow 😂

Edit: I don't think I'm showing my wife pricecharting.com, it's strangely alarming. Rule of Rose and Michigan: Report From Hell are two dodgy titles I got cheap years ago and their prices are just crazy
