The Retrogame Bubble Thread - "that's worth HOW MUCH now?!"

Congrats! I got the eBay notification that it was ending soon, was curious as to whether it sold, and was gratified to see someone bit. :)

So far, the moral of the collecting story seems to be "buy JRPGs and obscure horror games".

Somehow, I am not surprised by this. A bit confounded, but not surprised.

One aspect of game collecting I find interesting is checking to see which versions of a particular game fetch the highest prices. Usually it's the original release for obvious reasons, but that's not always the case. For example, the original PS2 release of Silent Hill 2 goes for around $100 CIB, but the Greatest Hits release sells for about twice that (though it makes more sense considering the GH release includes an extra bonus campaign originally created for the Xbox version of SH2).

I absolutely can, will, and do fault the hustle on that one.
At the risk of being hypocritical having just sold items for way more than anyone should pay for them, I'm with you here. It'd be one thing if the batteries were Nintendo branded! Though even then, $100...

My copy of Pokemon Sapphire (with new save battery, finally did it lol) sold via best offer just now for $300, original BIN was $350.

If you have complete Pokemon games, now's a good time to sell 'em.

What?

That's insane, no Pokémon game could be that rare

Good work though, Kazin. It'll keep you in Game and Watches for a bit!

It’s because it’s complete with box, which means it’s far more likely to be authentic. Buying it cart only is playing with fire given how many bootlegs there are.

Yeah, people don't want repros (understandably). Also, most kids (this one included) threw out the boxes and manuals and stuff and just kept the carts anyway, so I'd imagine the boxes themselves are (somewhat) rare. Helps that I posted a picture of the board as well with new battery, so the buyer could also see that it's not a fake.

...I think, anyway. I still can't believe the going rate is about $300 for the GBA Pokemon games right now, complete in box.

I made a joke about Gaiares in another thread, leading me to look on eBay for those promotional shirts they made with the pronunciation of the title on them. The game is now approaching a hundred bucks for a bare cart and in the $200 orbit for a complete US copy.

I picked it up on a lark like 15 years ago for five bucks. Good lord.

I can't believe how much Dreamcasts are worth now. Relatedly, I'm now selling my Sega Sports edition one lol. I don't expect to get that much, though. I'm hoping for $175, which seems to be the going rate for that model.

I also sold my 3DS copies of Dragon Quest VIII, VII, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, and SMTIV Apocalypse over the last week, for $100, $80, $100, and $85, respectively.

Jeebus. My son has been angling for copies of the 3DS Pokemon titles, and now I'm dreading what they'll cost me.

I don't think the 3DS Pokemon games are too bad yet - most are at or around original MSRP iirc. Though I'd pick them up soon if you're going to.

Working on a video on Kabuki Quantum Fighter, and it's $30 for a bare cart now? That isn't that much, until I think back to getting BOTH copies I had (I gave one to Brickroad, because he gave me his extra Crystalis forever ago) for like five bucks.

I streamed some Def Jam Vendetta last week, which got me thinking about how I still don't have a copy of Fight for NY. I knew it had a bit of a resurgence in the FGC, but I did NOT know it was regularly going for $300 now?! Like, what? The Xbox and GameCube versions are a little cheaper (the XBox version isn't backwards compatible at all, which I suppose is a factor, while the GameCube version is missing some music and voices), but wow. Even The Takeover for PSP is up there. Yikes.

Me in January: "I'm going to buy a PS3 and start collecting, get in ahead of the curve"

Me now, after Sony announced the PSN armegeddon:

Yeah, someone mentioned the other day on Twitter that the PS3 version of Splatterhouse went up a bunch in price, and... yeah, it's hovering around $100 now. Which, like, the 360 version is in the $35-$50 range? Is it just because of the PSN-mageddon?

I mean, I'm not THAT surprised, the game sold like shit on release (I paid full price, but iirc it dropped to like $40 within two or so weeks, it was bananas), so it's probably somewhat uncommon now, but also: everyone but a few select folks (myself included) hated it. And I haven't seen/heard some kind of big critical re-evaluation of it.

I sold my unopened copy of Dragon Quest VI DS for $175 and I felt like a GameStop executive charging that much for a game I paid $30 for a decade ago.

Geeeeeeeez. I don't have many unopened games myself, but in hindsight, that's what I should have done given that I had access to flash carts.

Huh, guess I could sell my copy of Trails in the Sky on PSP for that much. Wowzers.

The bit about collecting that I love the most is whether the game is an abomination or not has no bearing on the price. In fact, being something that nobody bought makes it more likely to be "valuable"

Although the fact you liked it means I really have to check it out...

Anything that is disc-only has basically tripled or even quadrupled in price already, and even some games that have 360 versions like Lollipop Chainsaw are shooting up in price for some reason

They aren't unopened, but I have IV-VI, and I'm sorely tempted to sell at least one of them. It's too bad V goes for the most, since I don't think I would ever sell that one.

Fair warning that there are games I will absolutely cop to liking for style-over-substance reasons and Splatterhouse 2009 is 100% one of them. It's a competent 3D character action game. One of many "Clone of War" games. Square is weak attack, triangle is strong attack, you have a rage meter thing that makes you basically invincible, etc. But it's steeped in '80s horror homages, it's super gory, and it even has a few 2.5D sections to pay tribute to the original 2 games, so I like it.

Also, fair warning on the misogyny tip: Jennifer is maybe the worst example of a damsel in recent memory. Not only is she kidnapped immediately, but as a way to "motivate" you to save her, you can find nudes of her as bonus collectables.

I wonder if Game & Watch prices will go down if this bubble ever bursts. I am missing 13 of the set - other than 3 of them which I'll likely eventually get (Crab Grab, Manhole (Widescreen), and the Donkey Kong Jr tabletop because then I'd complete the set), the rest are all hundreds of dollars, two of them at least a grand (Egg and the Super Mario Bros. F-1 Prize).
