It's Dangerous To Go AT ALL: Let's Play Zelda Classic
Guys, I'm itching to play some Zelda.
If you don't know what Zelda Classic is, go check out this thread. I'll wait. All caught up? So I've always been kind of down on ZC. I played a ton of quests on it but only ever finished a handful, and most, it not all, of those were deliberately short and clever. Most "full" quests I've played have been kind of terrible. However, folks over in that other thread seemed to think that the "official" third and fourth quests that come bundled with ZC are in fact pretty decent and worth playing. And so I decided to play them. And I'm taking you guys along with me. As I've been told that the Third Quest is insanely hard and I might never actually finish it, I'll start with the Fourth Quest, which apparently is some kind of prequel starring Ganon on his rise to power. Or that's just the password to skip to the fourth quest, whatever. This is going to be (mostly?) a video LP. Because this is my first time playing this quest, I'm probably going to need some help, so I'm hoping some folks will come along with me on this journey. My plan is to do no more than one level per video (if that much) so people can catch up. I will ask for suggestions and "playground hints" (i.e., no direct spoilers) if I get stuck. Wish me luck, and I'll see you all in a few days with the first video! TOC Chapter 1: Level 1 Chapter 2: Wandering Aimlessly on the Overworld (you can probably skip this one) Chapter 3: Level 2 at Last Chapter 4: In Sync Chapter 5: Head Colds and Wizrobes Chapter 6: Storm Front Chapter 7: Choir of Angels Chapter 8: Saaaaaailing Awaaaaaaay Chapter 9: Tricked by Modern Design Chapter 10: The Green Light Chapter 11 Chapter 12: Terrible, terrible, terrible dungeon Chapter 13 Chapter 14 Chapter 15: Dislikes Smoke Chapter 16: Recorded Live Chapter 17: Where's the Key? Chapter 18: The Key Master Chapter 19: Shaft Chapter 20: Do the Worm Chapter 21: FINALE! BONUS: Third Quest and Randomizer Last edited by McClain; 10-11-2013 at 10:38 PM. |

I should probably clarify that "play along with me" means you play the game on your own and we talk about it in the thread. Though I might figure out how to do some live stream type stuff down the road if this doesn't crash-and-burn out of the gate

I just came in here to post this: Cause I thought Zelda Classic was exactly that the 'classic' version of Zelda. |

McClain, why are you doing this? You have so much to live for!

I'm looking forward to this. I like creative Zelda hacks, but most of them are just insanely difficult, which means I don't want to play them. McClain can suffer on my behalf!

Ooh, the same day I started to play Zelda Lost Island using the ZC system you put this up... I havn't looked at the 4 starter quests, but now I'm tempted to play along.
Knowing me, I'll get brutally murdered doing so. |

Chapter 1: Ganon's revival, death, revival, death, and first success
IT BEGINS!
Our hero Ganon is revived, walks into a waterfall, whines about not having a boomerang, and recovers the first piece of the Triforce of Power. *Sorry about any A/V issues. Hypercam shit the bed and this was the best I could do to recover it* I have a theory that the boomerang might be hidden in that room with the tiles that I said "look like a boomerang." Remember: Please don't give me any direct spoilers, but I highly encourage "playground hints." |

"If you just want to make fun of my gameplay." I'm not going to make fun of you but I will yell at you. At about 14:20 in the room with all the blocks, Stalfos(es?) and Ropes you had the sword beam but walked up to attack the monsters! It drove me nuts.

It might behoove you to stock up on Heart Containers and search for the White Sword early. From what others have said, this quest isn't quite as challenging as the official Third Quest, but, unlike Third Quest, it has a few features that are outside the scope of the original NES games. You'll find being able to deal a lot of damage very invaluable later on.

Of course whenever I do the third quest I'll probably grind for the blue ring/shield/whitesword offscreen ASAP, hahaha. |

I can't say for this quest, but I know some other quests like to use the empty spaces of the map (like the T shape in the center of the helmet shape of Level 1) so look for suspicious places like that.

In the original game they did that, but it was almost always completely trapped rooms, like the eyes in Level 9. If I start getting desperate I'll check those, but I'd like to get a bomb upgrade before I start spamming every wall.

My big brother told me that if you kill all of the monsters in level 1 using only bombs, you get a shield that makes Link invincible.

Well from the first video, it looks like it's designed pretty well. Interesting rooms, nothing too obscene, no invisible walls, items pretty intuitive to find...
I wonder how long it'll take to get stupid. I'm going with Level-3. |

Okay, let's make this interesting. I'm hoping to get a video recorded on Sunday. Where do you guys want me to go first? And don't say "Level 2" because I don't know where it's at!

If I was playing a Zelda game blind, the first thing I'd do would be to go find as much stuff on the overworld as possible so as to know where it all is.

I told you a great starting place!
In fact, explore close to home. Use items in new ways. |

So, Hypercam shit the bed AGAIN, and this time it managed to do it in such a way that I'm not sure if I can salvage the video. The short version is, it recorded the first 7 minutes, fine, then a tiny thing happened on my computer, and suddenly the video started going 2X faster than the audio. I'm not really sure what do do with the footage. On top of that, the video was basically me running around lost for half an hour. I never even find Level 2. so ... this LP may be kind of doomed. I'll see if there's anything I can do about it, but sorry, probably no video today. |

Chapter 2: Wandering in the Dark
I managed to make some kind of chicken salad out of what hypercam did to my video. I had to split it into two videos and the sync on the second one is REALLY bad in the middle, but I still thought my pain would be entertaining enough to post.
In this episode, Ganon gets trolled by an old man, dies a whole lot, has no idea where to go, and pretty much wastes everyone's time. Next time I hope to actually get a final recording that's as good as my tests so I can stop blaming hypercam for my crappy videos and can just focus on my crappy gameplay. |

What frame rate are you recording at?
I think Torgo and I both came to the conclusion that exactly 30 was causing problems, and we both went down to 25. |

OK this is just painful. Backseat player time!
You got the power bracelet in level one. Why are you not pushing every boulder you see? Someone in the peanut gallery who played this suggested looking for level 2 "close to home." Why are you not focusing on screens near where you start? A random hint giver mentioned an arrow pointing the wrong way. In particular, there's an arrow made of boulders directly west of the first screen. I've never touched this thing, but there do seem to be some pretty straightforward hints that that's how to progress. |

Thoughts as I'm watching.
You passed the entrance to Level 2 in the first video. Just north of spawn. I think you need the enemies on screen to be dead before you push the rocks. It also takes a moment. - You figured this out. Look at the type of rocks you push with the Power Bracelet. They will be your guide to using it in other places. Level 2, again. Secret to the East and Secret to the West... Level 5 is exactly halfway between them. - You figured this out. You died on a screen with a helpful item, something that would help you get life! The Letter is on the Beach Also White Sword is in the graveyard in a different spot. |

Thanks for the tips, guys. I didn't really say so in the video but I was trying to cover as much ground as possible to get a general lay of the land. I was hoping to stumble into Level 2 or something else useful but it didn't happen. I'm also learning how hard it is to play and talk at the same time. Hopefully the next video will be less painful all around.
I got mad because I felt like the game was trolling me But yeah, kind of an over-reaction. Beginner LPer learning the ropes here, hahaha |
