The Yearly Four Job Fiesta, now with Remastered Pixels!

I actually started playing the Pixel Remasters and am on II right now, so I should easily make it to V well before the deadline so I guess I might actually do this this year.

My full party for this year ended up White Mage / Time Mage / Blue Mage / Freelancer.

With one character who can equip anything and white magic at my disposal I should be able to take down Shinryu no problem, probably not Omega though.

I went with a Typhoon run this year.
BLU / THF / BST / RNG
Pretty ideal cheeze party. I'm in world 2 and most of the bosses haven't gotten more than a turn or two.
I'm playing on the pixel remaster this year on switch which is nice, since i'm traveling a fair bit this summer so i can take it with me.

I'm starting a run right now - looks like I rolled Thief/Time Mage/Geomancer/Dragoon.

Was hoping it'd be a low stress run, but maybe this will be fun

Thief can be a rough start, Magissa and Galura can be difficult fights but once you get past them you get Time Mage and the ability to break Rods so the rest of World 1 should be easy.

Geomancer and Dragoon aren't the best classes to get but they have their uses. At the very least you won't have to worry about damage floors.

So I'm not participating in this but there is something I noticed in FF5 that I wanted to share to get your thoughts.

Here are 3 Movers:

And here is the cover of Rush's seminal album Hold Your Fire:

Took my time with this one, since I'm playing several other things, but wrapped it up heading into the holiday:

Bards make most random encounters trivial, and most otherwise troublesome bosses too. You just have to be patient; they're not speedy. All in all, not that bad of a run.

One year to the day, I wrapped up my 2024 run. To try out something different I did a typhoon run (any job can be rolled at any crystal) with the upgrade restriction (only use one job at a time for all characters, once you switch to a new job you can never switch back).

My actual job traversal ended up going Monk => Time Mage => Red Mage => Bard, which translated to playing the last two worlds as Bards with a mix of time/red magic as a secondary ability. Last year I had one bard in my party, and left this comment:

Bards make most random encounters trivial, and most otherwise troublesome bosses too. You just have to be patient; they're not speedy. All in all, not that bad of a run.

I have exactly the same comment after playing as four of them. I can't imagine doing this one without fast forward functionality, that's for sure.

So, i used Typhoon run and got THF, WHM, RNG. I can't get past Byblos. Is there any trick other than just grind levels?

Did the Pixel Remaster change the difficulty at all from the original game?

The remasters try not to change much about the mechanics. I haven't played it, but I heard FF5PR was the most faithful of the bunch.

Thief can steal from Zuus to get -- I forget if it's Elixirs or Hi-Potions, but a stack of 99 of either is enough for a solo Thief to beat Byblos. A full party can get away with far fewer.

White Mage has the Flail or Morningstar or whatever it is, which should make it competitive with Thief for damage (which is to say, neither is dealing very much). In any case, you want to spec for all-out offense, because once Byblos starts halving your levels, your damage tanks.

I don't remember Ranger being available at this point, but if it is, it's likely to be your best bet. A White Mage probably does more damage spamming !Animals than attacking.

Grinding a few levels might be more palatable than throwing yourself against the boss endlessly, but levels don't make a huge difference in FF5. If you have enough HP, more levels won't be especially helpful. You mostly just need to be prepared for a long fight here.

The PRs feel easier overall, to me, but part of that is the increased ease of grinding via auto-battle, but as Mogri said extra levels don't help a whole lot in this scenario. Most strategies for those jobs involve waiting out Byblos' entire MP pool before going ham, but you might be able to get by without that. It's a rough combo either way.

I can't find any definitive information about this, but I played a fair amount of V and VI Pixel Remasters now. They both seem too easy on default settings!

I've been playing VI with 50% EXP and 50% Gold - it's been fun, and still only requires a little bit of grinding.

FFIV had double XP on release but they've fixed that (imagine putting that in like the most well paced RPG ever made).

V is pretty much the same except a few stupid things, like shell not working vs. Almagest for instance.

It's that time again! They've added 2 new variants this year: Sirocco and Geyser runs. The former is weighted towards Wind and Fire jobs, and the latter likewise is Water and Earth.

This year, I got Knight, Monk, Blue Mage and Bard.

I've never had Monk before, but I used it's inherent !Counter along with !Guard from Knight to defeat Liquid Flame
I've also never had Bard before. The Run had Bard in it, so i just saw how good they can be at the end, so hopefully I can replicate their success.
I've put Twohanded on the Blue mage which has increased their deadliness in addition to the regular gimicky stuff Blue can pull off.

I rolled Knight/Time/Black/Dragoon. It's light on healing, but otherwise it's pretty good. I made it up to the Ancient Library last night.

World 1 finished.
Soul Canon didn't even get to fire. Archeoaevis only got to take a couple of turns. Purobolos didn't take any turns. Titan didn't do any damage. Manticore did get off one Aqua Breath.

I’m finding that white mage is not an ideal start! Protect and patience seems to be the key.

I don’t love that silence only appears to sometimes block Magissa’s spells. That’s not how status effects work, game.
