Super Mario in SMB 1

After Mario eats a Super Mushroom in SMB 1, he becomes...

  • A normal-sized human

  • A giant

Is the 1-block high starter Mario in Super Mario Bros. a small person, or is Super Mario a giant?
 
Follow-up question: Is the Mario in 3D Mario games like Mario 64 etc. the same size as the small starter Mario, or the super-sized Mario?
 
Weirdly enough, he becomes a mouth, a space ship, and *checks notes* a sauce?
 
Some of the NSMB games indicate he’s been smooshed down by Bowser at the start of the game, so the Mushroom is stretching him out to his normal size.

While indisputable photographic proof; Luigi is wielding a fire flower like a flamethrower, which is hardly canon.
 
I too have felt like I became bigger due to the ingestion of mushrooms. It was never so cut and dried though, I ended up in a dark room alone, wishing it would end.

So basically, I've lived Super Mario Bros 2.
 
Mario is a normal sized human, and when he gets hurt he shrinks due to embarrassment. SMB starts with him small because of mise en scene.

Peach is just tall—taller than Mario, consistently. But if you reach her in Super Mario Bros. as Super Mario, Mario is taller than her. This further proves Mario is growing beyond his normal height when he eats a mushroom.


 
Mario is actually a child in SMB, it's set chronologically between Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong
 
Not many people know, but Mario was originally named "Puckio" in Japan but was changed before release in the US because people thought vandals would deface the arcade cabinets to make it say a cuss word.
 
Humanfolk in the Mushroom Kingdom naturally become short due to the dangers present there. Mushrooms are necessary to reattain normal height. Peach is rarely seen with reduced stature because her royal status affords her a steady supply of mushrooms.

Any reports of mushrooms causing gigantism is a result of the rare "Mega Mushroom" species.
