I too have felt like I became bigger due to the ingestion of mushrooms. It was never so cut and dried though, I ended up in a dark room alone, wishing it would end.

Also by the book's logic he is using the flower while "small", which you can't do in the game. THIS BOOK TEACHES TERRIBLE LESSONS TO CHILDREN!

Mario is a normal sized human, and when he gets hurt he shrinks due to embarrassment. SMB starts with him small because of mise en scene.

Peach is just tall—taller than Mario, consistently. But if you reach her in Super Mario Bros. as Super Mario, Mario is taller than her. This further proves Mario is growing beyond his normal height when he eats a mushroom.

Any reports of mushrooms causing gigantism is a result of the rare "Mega Mushroom" species.
