Did anyone play the NextFest demo for Metal Slug Tactics? I didn't get around to it but I've been pretty interested in it, and their recent gameplay trailer looks pretty solid.

Just played the Next Fest demo for Creatures of Ava, and it’s delightful. Think a little bit 3D Zelda, a little bit Metroid Prime, and a little bit Pokémon Legends Arceus, but where the main action is documenting, healing, and cooperating with the titular Creatures. Not only is there a dedicated petting animation for each creature, you actually need to pet them all in order to fill out your Avapedia!

Any game where the answer to "Can you pet the ??????" is YES has my attention, though I'll have to wait to see if it makes it to other consoles eventually.

Oh shoot I didn't realize Nextfest ended today, I thought it was tomorrow. I just went through Steam though and seems like most things I downloaded are still available to play, hopefully they last a few days long.

The store notes the demo is still active until June 27th!

If a person wanted to get a Steam Deck, would it be difficult to buy at a reasonable price/time frame? You just order from Valve itself, right?

There used to be a miles-long waitlist, but these days, you can just order one.

Are they Cool?
Well, for me, it single-handedly got me back to playing any PC games at all. I am not interested in updating my ~2013 era desktop PC and so I just resigned myself to not playing PC games ever again until I got a Deck.

I use it more than any gaming system now. It’s going to be entirely dependent on what games you like and what you’ve already purchased, but the compatibility’s Pretty Good nowadays.

I love mine. I use it pretty much daily, especially when we have a show or movie going that I'm not into but don't want to be antisocial about, and it's letting me catch up on various PC things I can't easily play because other people use the computer a lot in my house. I've double dipped on some things, like Elden Ring.

My only complaint is that 512 GB goes fast (I need a Micro SD card) on my model, and I mostly play with the sound off or very low like the Switch, but that isn't a complaint with the system.

Some things you have to do a little work to get running (selecting the right setting so you don't get a black screen at startup, etc.), or aren't really designed for the Deck so are a little awkward to play. But probably 80% of things have had no hitch. And there are guides to how to get things working all over, easily found.

There are odd compatibility gaps, like NONE of the Dragon Age games are set up to work with it, though they will run. There are ways to get them controlling right, but you have to put the solution together yourself or find a community-conjured one. But it is highly customizable in terms of controller inputs (which can independently saved for each game) so there are lots of approaches. I've only found a couple things that don't really run at all.

I had been planning to get a PC, but I couldn’t find a time when I had an extra 1000 dollars or more that didn’t need to go to more pressing matters. The 512 GB is way more in my price range. Plus, I don’t plan on playing a lot of big, taxing games on it. Mostly smaller and older titles.

It handles a lot of bigger and more taxing games quite well, jsyk. It's not going to run at mega settings, and higher settings can drain the battery, but I can't complain about how anything looks. All on par with my four-year-old computer, or better. You wanna play Elden Ring or Control or something on this, it's going to look nice.

I bought, obtained and set up my Steam Deck. It feels a bit…flimsy, I guess? Not rock solid like a PS Vita or even a Switch. I trust that Valve knows what they’re doing. They made Half-Life.

I noticed that a number of the games I already owned had a yellow symbol next to them. According to the menus, that means they work, but may have issues or require additional steps to get going. Some games just do not work at all. A fair number of “big” games in the store have the Works Good symbol, like Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3 and even the technical quagmire Cyberpunk 2077. That’s very surprising.

Kazin

did i do all of that?

Look up whatever game you're trying to play here, unless I'm misremembering which site I use to get semi-supported games up and running, that should tell you which Proton layer to use, and any other tweaks you may have to make to get games to work. Or just tell you that it won't work at all.

I've found the vast majority of games with the (!) work just fine. It's only the (/) ones that are likely to have issues. But there are some weird things that aren't verified or even yellow checked, like the entire Dragon Age series.

The device is pretty sturdy, it fell off my desk a couple times early on, before I found the right spot for it. None the worse for wear.

Good to hear it’s sturdy. Also nice to know that the (!) doesn’t necessarily mean No.

I genuinely am excited to play some games on this thing. Sadly, I spent all my Fun Money on the system itself, so for now I’ll just take a look at my backlog

Usually the (!) means that maybe text will be small, or you'll have to use the trackpad mouse and triggers for some things, or even sometimes the touch screen instead of either of those. Stuff like that—not optimized for the deck, maybe awkward in spots, but works. The only game I haven't figured out how to get working has been Gods Will Be Watching, which wouldn't load right, but I also didn't really investigate on that one. Everything else I've found solutions for.

I was wondering how it was different from the current family library, but being able to play a game at the same time when someone else is using their library is a huge upgrade.

Also they said near the end they will be getting rid of the current setup, but this just seems like an upgrade so no complaints.

Little bit sad that it’s country limited now so that me and my bf can’t share games anymore, but that’ll hopefully be solved someday by us living in the same location anyway.

Oh I didn't realize that was going to change, weird.
Yeah I think it’s understandable when there’s five accounts able to access a once, but it feels real weird when it was previously fine. It’s not too surprising that it changed but a little bit upsetting if you have family or partners overseas

LCD Steam Decks are on sale.

The 512gb one at that price is kind of a steal. The Steam Deck is fantastic hardware. Sure, I've spent more time fiddling with it than actually playing stuff on it, but it really is fantastic having my Steam library in my hands like that. And now back to Hololive Treasure Mountain.

Yeah, highly recommended at that price. I had to return my steam deck for health reasons (was too heavy to comfortably use for me) but thought it was a really cool handheld experience.
