It's voting season in the Fire Emblem mobile game, so I decided to do another Satoshi Urushihara style Fire Emblem piece. This time it's Lucia, from Path of Radiance:
I'm pretty happy with how this one turned out. The inspiration for this one was more 'Growlanser' than 'Langrisser'. Lucia is actually the first character I attempted to do in this style, back in 2017. I abandoned it at the sketching phase, though, because it wasn't turning out how I'd hoped. Here's the original sketch:
This mediocre sketch isn't completely representative of my actual artistic ability circa 2017, but it's still really encouraging to see how much I've improved in this style in the intervening years.
I haven't posted anything in this thread in quite a while, but I had a pretty good year for art so I wanted to share the retrospective.
Lots of milestones in general. I met some really cool people, did a little bit of professional work, contributed to a number of fan books, passed 10k followers on everyone's favorite dying social media platform, and started rebuilding on bluesky. I also had some some "senpai noticed me" moments; Masami Obari followed me on twitter and Akiman retweeted a portfolio day post of mine and Yasumi Matsuno liked a piece of my fan art.
Here are (most of) the illustrations I did this year:
I drew this in Jan '24 as a follow up to a picture of "Delta Red" Cammy I drew in 2023. That one was based on Cammy's original ST icon where she has arms up, so I wanted to do another "Cammy stretching" picture with her Killer Bee design. I'm hoping to do another Cammy in 2025 based on the SFVI design.
From Feb 2024. This is technically an older drawing (the original is from Feb 2021), but I've updated it for Valentine's Day the past couple of years and as a result it makes a pretty good measure for how far I've come in this style. I think it's pretty much gone as far as I'm going to take it at this point, so I probably won't do a version for 2025. There is a coloring error that I've somehow missed over the last few years, though. I should fix that.
I was looking at Nomura's original FFVII art one day and decided I really liked the beta Cloud portrait that they eventually used for "young Cloud" in the final game, so I decided on a whim to do a portrait based on it. It ended up being a total dud on my social media accounts, but it's one of my personal favorite pieces I've done. I really like how the wear on the Buster Sword turned out.
My contribution to "RP Zine 2024", a digital fan zine put together by an acquaintance of mine. Tactics Ogre is one of my favorite games ever and wanted to do character collage piece like the classic Langrisser box art illustrations. The original plan was to include more Xenobians and Dark Knights Loslorien, but I ended up going with the Phoraena sisters instead to balance the gender ratio. The framing and expression of the characters is patterned after a mix of their SFC and PSP portrait art.
I reposted this in October for TO's 29th anniversary and it earned a like from Yasumi Matsuno, which was super cool to me.
An alternate "OVA" version of an illustration I did for Halloween 2023. I really like how the hair turned out on this one. This was a pretty successful illustration on twitter after a string of mediocre performers. I don't draw straight-up porn, but in my experience being coy about the subject matter tends to go over well.
A piece I (sort of) drew for the golden week and bikini day trends.
This one has a long story behind it, but the gist of it is that this started as a, uh, fetish art commission that the client never opted to take beyond the sketch stage. I sat on it for a few years, but I really liked the elaborate bride outfits that I designed for the piece and wanted to do something with it, so I updated the sketch and removed some of the more specific "elements" and changed them into original characters.
I got as far as lining the fancy lingerie before golden week rolled around and I realized I could pretty easily just draw golden bikinis on them and post that. One of these days I may go back and finish coloring the wedding outfits but the whole piece is kind of tacky so I dunno.
My contribution to the Xeno Compendium fan artbook. I originally wanted to draw KOS-MOS and T-elos because I've never actually played any of the Xenoblade games, but I wasn't sure if that would fly so I also mentioned on my application potentially doing something for the Skell mecha in XCX. That ended up being my assignment.
Skells are called "Dolls" in the Japanese version of XCX, which gave me the idea to do a piece inspired by Kogado's PowerDoLLS series of PC-98 strategy games. This particular aesthetic is based on PD2, and is a collage take on the title screen, intro sequence, and loadout menu.
I'd actually been kicking around doing something in the PowerDoLLS aesthetic for a while; I have a half-completed version of Nightfall from Armored Core VI done in this style, but I stalled out a bit on that when I had trouble deciding how I wanted to do the "pretty girl portrait" part of the illustration since you never really get to see people in the AC series. XCX ended up being a perfect fit instead, and I ended up getting to do Kunihiko Tanaka fanart even though I didn't get to draw KOS-MOS.
Like the Killer Bee Cammy drawing earlier in the year, this is another illustration done as a follow up to my Delta Red Cammy portrait from 2023. It has the same style background as the Cammy piece and similar cropping. It's also inspired *very* loosely by her ST portrait (and a little more directly by me having fun posing the SH Figuarts Chun-li).
Morrigan in traditional Highland garb.
I signed up to contribute to a Darkstalkers tribute zine this year, and the organizers ran some fun art challenges on the discord for the project. The prompt for this one was "Morrigan dressed more conservatively", and since she's canonically Scottish I thought it might be fun to put her in something that fit that heritage.
It was a relatively quick piece by my standards (I did it in a few hours instead of days/weeks and I think the difference in precision shows a bit), but I was really pleased with the reaction to this one on social media.
Another challenge from the same discord community, this time in the leadup to the MvC Fighting Collection. The prompt was "Lilith dressed as a Marvel character". I put a little more effort into this one because I wasn't busy with anything else at the time.
And the follow up challenge prompt was "Venom dressed as a Capcom character". This is technically Sigma and the Venom Symbiote wearing each other, I guess? It turns out if you combine Sigma and Venom you just get Spawn.
This was a fun one -- instead of my usual cel shading style, I decided to try doing it in a heavily inked western comic style.
This was surprisingly successful on twitter for an illustration without any women in it.
Dungeons and Dragon's Crown. Karlach as The Amazon. An idea I had been kicking around for a while after playing Baldur's Gate 3; I'm not normally a fan of bikini armor, but when using Karlach I thought it was kind of a shame that there's a lot of cool detail in Karlach's design - the glow of the infernal engine, her tattoos, the rivets, etc - that aren't really visible if she wears armor. Also Barbarian armor is pretty ugly in BG3. Anyway, the lack of bikini armor lead to me thinking of this.
Everyone was drawing pictures of Mai when she was revealed for City of the Wolves, and I kind of wanted to, too. But I always feel weird following trends, so I wanted to put a spin on it and ended up drawing this outfit from the Fatal Fury motion picture instead.
One of my favorite parts of The Motion Picture is how all of the characters have different outfits every day that you see them over the span of their globe spanning adventure.
Except Terry, who I guess only owns one set of clothes.
Another idea I had been kicking around for a long time. This is based on an early concept art piece for Mario RPG that the director shared leading up to the release of the remake.
This is one of the fastest "finished' pieces I've done; I finished it in a single day, which is rare for me. The simple pose and design made it a bit easier, I guess. It was also my most successful individual piece this year.
This was originally going to be my page contribution to the Darkstalkers Tribute Zine that I mentioned above, but it ended up getting moved to the cover, which was super cool.
The "queen of hearts" theming was something I had planned to do for Halloween this year anyway, so the DS zine was a great opportunity.
For some reason I keep drawing Lilith inverted.
When my Morrigan/Lilith piece was moved to the cover, I wanted to do a second illustration for my page in the zine. Rikuo had very little presence in the book, so I decided to do a PC-98 style portrait of him. I tried to make him as curiously attractive as possible. The roses were my brother's idea.
I was working on the cover until the end, so I did this the night before the submission deadline. Took me about 8 hours, from 8 PM to 4 AM.
A ZeroRanger piece to celebrate the game's 6th anniversary (please play ZeroRanger). It's a redraw of a copic marker piece I did for Inktober 2020, which was also the first piece of artwork that I ever shared on twitter.
I was hired to contribute a tshirt illustration for Eyepatch Wolves Arc 4 and this is the result. The inspiration is a mix of PC-98 visuals and works like World of Horror. This is the first time I've done any "1-bit" pixel art, and I think it turned out pretty cool. John wore the shirt for his video on Jake Paul's boxing nonsense and it's wild seeing someone wear something that I drew. It's also an honor and a big confidence booster to be featured alongside some artists that I've looked up to.
A fun experiment that I did for an acquaintance's DTIYS challenge. Not actually my style, obviously, but I had been playing Card Fighters' Clash at the time and wanted to try to replicate the style of the cards from the NGPC game. I'll probably do more of these some day.
I've also been playing a lot of Metal Slug lately (mostly because of Metal Slug Tactics) and wanted to draw Fio. I was on vacation and away from my PC for about 2 weeks at the beginning of December, so I bought an iPad Pro so I could draw digitally remotely, and this is what I ended up with.
My last drawing of the year. This started as more of an experiment and not something I even intended to finish or share publicly -- the idea was just to give some ideas I had for soft shading techniques a shot. It ended up working pretty well and I like how it turned out. Her features are based mostly on her design from the Metroid Fusion ending slide with the Mercury Stream/Dread version of the Zero Suit.
This was originally going to be my page contribution to the Darkstalkers Tribute Zine that I mentioned above, but it ended up getting moved to the cover, which was super cool.
