Redactle, the daily ████████-█████ ████████ puzzle

281 and 53.74%, and I started looking stuff up towards the end because I just was not getting it. I seem to have trouble with articles about scientific terms that aren't pure math.

Today's was brutal for me, which made me feel extremely dumb when I finally got there at 343 guesses. I just could not get the word ice for some reason. Ugh.

107 guesses, 38% accuracy

I wasted a lot of guesses this time around because I thought this was a science topic again (lol), though that line of inquiry eventually led me to guessing the word water (guess 72). Eventually I had the insight that "if water appears so often, the maybe ice could too?" (guess 97), and from there I made a few still-dumb guesses until I had an epiphany and realized what the general category of the article was.

Looks like it was the opposite case for me:
23 guesses with an accuracy of 47.83%

Which made me think that it would be an easy day for everyone.

39 for me today. As is becoming usual I was feeling completely hopeless until about guess 36, then I got it all at once.

I got oddly stuck on thinking it was rowing for a bit and guessed the wrong form of the final word which wasted a couple guesses, oops. 66 and a lot of chipping away at it, only a couple words had a lot of hits which were sport (13) and water (13).

Felt good to break a rough streak. Also, about 30 of my guesses were the standard fillers I usually go through to make it more generally readable (I guess that's a lot of fillers...?), so once I actually went down the guessing path it went pretty quick. Although I have to credit the hint to do that to the fact that in at least one sentence the word silica had not been redacted?? That alone put me in the right general direction. I went through elements and chemistry stuff, getting a few minor hits, before seeing "On _____" which I correctly identified as Earth, which got me to rock, then the M____ form of that, then the answer.

I didn't even notice that.

But I guess I didn't really need the help (this time).

Honestly, they really need to add a few more words to the unredacted filters, imo. Demonstratives (this, that, these, those) absolutely, and Be-verbs (was, were, am, are) too, at least.

I also usually go through few-some-many-more-most-all, they-them-their, who-what-when-where-why-how, one-two-three, and occasionally always-sometimes-never. I don't think all of those sets would be candidates for automatic inclusion, but having a bit more than now would definitely be nice...

13! Not beating that soon.

I've noticed "water" appears often!
I use "century" like you suggested a lot. As I've played more I've spent a LOT more time reading through the article as you can pick up a lot of info before guessing anything. But sometimes I just want to guess and see where it takes me, depends on my mood that day.

While the article structure and what I uncover provides a lot of guidance my stable at this point is the two above, then something from "time" "history" "culture" "person/people" "metal" "speed/rate" "heat/energy". "Most" "shape" "body" "north/south/west/east" are other ones I'll try out if I still don't have a clear idea. I'm sure I'm forgetting other ones.

I've stopped using "animal" and "plant" once I realized the sidebar doesn't show up in these. "popular" is usually obvious where it is used so I don't do that as much anymore either.

Haven't been able to post my numbers over the past few days, let's do a quick rundown.

#55 (2022-05-31), turbulence: 56/86, 65.12%
Found this one tough, like most others did. I got my first breakthrough with "energy" on guess 60, with a bigger bump from "flow" on guess 78. I actually misspelled the title as "turbulance" on guess 85, an unnecessary loss.

#56 (2022-06-01), ice skating: 34/43, 79.07%
The presence of "through to the next round" and "was {knocked?} out on the {3}" immediately set me off on the idea of sports. I actually put in "playoff" as my first guess as a wild attempt at the perfect score.
I only finally got around to putting in "sports" and "sport" as guesses 35 and 41, respectively. That's when I noticed a lot of three-letter redacted words, which could be "ice" as a location or field type. There was one word that stood out to complete the title after that.

Today's Redactle: #57 (2022-06-02), volcano: 19/25, 76.00%
Definitely about rocks and geology with "silica" revealed from the start. The etymology? section seemed to also start
"The {name?} {actually word} {title-7} is {derived?} from the {root?} {actually name} of {7}..."
My fifth guess was "Earth" to check the start of the second sentence:
"On Earth, {plural title?-9} are {most?} {often?} found..."
and I also noticed
"{deep?} in the Earth"
later in the paragraph. That should have been a sign for me to slow down and think more carefully, because how many things have a plural with two more letters in it, rather than just the one?
I finally got back on track for getting the correct title with "flow" and "water" on guesses 23 and 24. All along, I had been thinking of lava, magma, and types of rock, including igneous, so it's good that my cognitive anchor was in the right place. In retrospect, I probably should have guessed one of those words and they would have probably helped me narrow things down a lot faster.

45 guesses today, which felt pretty good after yesterday's debacle. I got water and submarine (not sure where I pulled this one from) fairly early on, so I thought I was looking for some kind of underwater topographical feature, but then I got rock and lava in a row and that got me to the answer in a couple more guesses.

83 guesses this time. not bad.

I guessed the word water early on (guess 3), though I was pretty confused because I wasn't getting very many hits with words related to that, until I guessed "surface" (guess 36), which got a lot of hits (but still led me in the wrong direction). Eventually, I started guessing units of time such as day, year, and month which lead me to guessing moon and then earth, which finally tipped me off to the subject being geological in nature.

80 for me, I got the phrase “escape from a <blank> chamber below the surface” and struggled with it. I was thinking it had to do with like ocean caves or something. Eventually I hit on the idea of hydrothermal vents and got to it from there.

I missed silica. I don’t tend to look at the whole article much. Possibly doing the puzzle on my phone every day is a disadvantage, since I can only see a small fragment of the text at a time.

5 guesses, 100% accuracy. I'll probably never do this well again.

I knew from the opening paragraph that it would be a country in either east/west Africa or Europe. Guessed Europe and east first, which were both wrong, and then the first seven-letter African country that came to mind was the answer.

Today's Redactle #58 (2022-06-03) is set up pretty well for getting the one-and-done.
The article seems pretty clearly a geographical article, either a city or country, what with the long list of translations in the first paragraph and the information box towards the end of the page. The first two sentences provide enough information to go for the ace:

"{title-7} ({various other languages}), {previously?} {actually officially} the {8} of {7} ({in other languages}), is a {country?} in {East|West?} {Europe|Africa?}. {title-7} is {bordered?} by {country-10} in the {north|south?}, {country-4} to the {east|west}, {country-6} to the {north|south}{east|west}, and {country-6-6} to the {north|south}{east|west}."

The only country I can think of with a {6-6} hyphenated name is Guinea-Bissau, which puts the geography into West Africa. Due to the number of countries bordering the title, it's probably along the western coast. But it's not Morocco, it's got to be further to the south. Uh, what other western African countries do I know? It definitely did not come to me right away, I had to do a lot of thinking and listing to come up with one that fit well enough. Looking at an actual map, I was pretty wrong about my African geography, but, eh, good enough, right?

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
17! (technically 18 but I misspelled one).

Like others I could tell it was a geography one from my first scroll through, and all the languages and the big hint at it being arabic from the prefix As made me guess Africa (18) early. Despite getting zero hits Sahara was a very helpful guess at eliminating a lot. Guessed South (5) both to get the direction hints and to confirm or rule out South Africa as being nearby.

But honestly the main reason I got it was that I recently struggled with a Worldle recently and was looking at this area on a map a few days ago.

It didn't take me too long to get to "Oh, this is a country in Africa," but after a few guesses I to try and narrow down geography or history, I realized that, frankly, I wouldn't have been able to get there on my own, so I went and looked up a list of African countries. Perused for likely candidates and also did some letter-counting to polish it off.

32 for me - started by getting Arabic in the languages list at the start from the As-prefix, which would have helped me get it a lot faster if I’d known prior to looking it up just now that the prefix is specific to words starting with S. Took me a little while to get from there to West Africa, then my only barrier was general geographical ignorance.

23 guesses, 73.91%

That was a very funny lucky break I had.

For my 19th and 20th guesses I guessed cultue and popular, which led me to the "In Popular Culture" section of the article. From there I noticed a few titles in that section were in the form of "The ████ of ███" which made me think of Lord of the Rings, so I guessed "Lord". From there it was just a matter of naming the two famous old people I knew who went by "Lord So-and-So" (my first guess was Kelvin).

Got it in five, pure luck - I thought it was going to be a ruler of some sort, so I started with king, tried a few other titles, hit on Lord at four, went with the first Lord <five letters> that came to mind and there you go.
