Redactle, the daily ████████-█████ ████████ puzzle

44 at 84.09%. One of the easier ones I've had in a while. There was the one spot that just had a _-____ repeated that I couldn't figure out, but I had just enough elsewhere to solve overall.

46 for today. I knew that it was something on an island in a French river by my 10th guess, but I had to do a little cheating after getting Seine. I didn't know Notre Dame was on an island!

29 for me, but I feel I should have done better. I knew it was on an island in a river by guess six, and I can only readily think of one structure on an island in a river which would have been the correct answer. Certainly by the time I narrowed it to the Seine at guess 20 the correct answer was the only one I had any shot at getting. I think I was thrown by “de Paris”.

Got my third hole-in-one today. Saw from the opening paragraph that it was a living person, realized every part of the answer was two letters, and then there was only one person I could think of.

I got Saturday's in 8 guesses, a new personal record! I first thought Arabic because of the 2-letter article in the title, but "al" wasn't in there. I thought some more and guessed French, but "du" didn't track. The only hangup was when I had to think of the different name besides "du Lac."

Yesterday's I got in 64 and frankly as a former cellist I'm a bit ashamed of myself. I was misled when I (correctly) identified the titles of several spaghetti westerns lower in the article, and went around Leone- and cinema-related stuff for a while before I course corrected. I had relatively early on that he was American, but also had a lot to do with China/Chinese something (fairly obvious because of the 2-2 2 title format), but it took a while before everything finally clicked.

Today's is a doozy! 65 guesses with only 30.77% accuracy. The clue that got me on the right track was my 44th guess, and even that had only 1 hit, and the "giveaway" clue I got on the next guess only had 2 hits. After that it was just narrowing things down, but man. This one is low on filler words to help out. The words in the title only had 13 and 8 total hits respectively!!

These short ones are so damn hard. 58 at 27.59%. So many zeros. When my core guesses failed so hard, I struggled to find anything.

I must've gotten lucky, I got today's done in 19. "Plant" was my 10th guess, took me a few more to get to "root".

I got 30 guesses and 26%. I had “eaten by humans as food” in the opening sentence, but struggled from there.

Well, looks like that's the ballgame for the original site, at least for now. A sad day.

I did go over to Redactle Unlimited and while I'm not as big a fan of the format (mainly, guesses being justify-text crammed into the sidebar instead of one per line), hey, we get to keep playing! Also a Unlimited version's dev took over the reddit and is active there and, as far as I can tell, in updating the site so we can probably put in feature requests and such.

Yeah, I begrudgingly moved over to Unlimited today as well. Just give me a cleaner interface, and don't make me click the "Daily" button to do the daily puzzle. That should be the default! Anyway, I got today's in 12.

I'm not sure but I wonder if I was the only person in the world to have solved it on the original site before it went down.

Or maybe since it failed then it wasn't able to get the global statistics.

I think this will be the end of my time playing Redactle. :(

Yep, the Redactle-Unlimited creator is trying to quickly code a way to make the same puzzle show up for everyone as of tomorrow. Since it currently points to redactle to determine the daily puzzle it will break tomorrow as well. But this person seems really into improvements and keeping the game alive so that's awesome, and they're taking feedback on interface stuff.

Anyway, 22 for today, glad my geography is getting better.

My girlfriend did (and was surprised when I told her the site went down), as did a few people on the Redactle reddit when I went looking to see if anyone had any more info.

I can say for a fact that I'm the second person to have solved it on Redactle Unlimited though, because when you solve there it shows you your stats compared to the global population, and at the time there were only two people who'd solved it.

I think I’m just gonna let it go. I’ve enjoyed my time with redactle, but somehow just having the option of more than one puzzle per day kills it for me.

I really wish the creator would say something about what's going on with the website. I really prefer the original interface so much more than the Unlimited one.

Anyway, got today's in 19 without anything particularly noteworthy happening.

I thought I was out, but I’m back. Got today’s in four, though it might have been two if I’d been more restrained with guesses two and three - if it had been the Black Sea I’d expect a big blank for Mediterranean in the opening paragraph, and I’m pretty sure we’ve had the North Sea previously (come to think of it, it was the English Channel), so both were unlikely answers this time. I just struggled to think of seas with five letter names.

I switched my subscription from the original Redactle to Unlimited and he's working on some sort of multiplayer invite-based system to solve on a puzzle together is coming soon which is a neat idea and something I'd do with my husband if I could.

People have been digging and apparently everything of his* went dark on the same day in April with no notice so that doesn't bode well.

*gotta say people got into his personal life more than seems reasonable to me

With the original site still up and running for now after all, I'm hanging onto that in hopes that the Unlimited dev tidies things up a bit more before I make the jump.

21 today, though I had to look up the second word of the title. I got as far as knowing that he was an Italian man named John during the reign of Henry VIII, but I was correct in my assumption that I wouldn't have gotten "Cabot" on my own.

116 for me, I got that it was an Italian explorer pretty early on but I eventually had to Google that first phrase because I really had no idea.

I got it in 50 with the help of google for the second word of the title. Once I googled it I was like, I recognise that name, but there was no risk of me getting it on my own.

Today's was really hard for me for some reason. I just couldn't get any traction! I knew it was some kind of animal but none of my guesses were turning up anything helpful. Didn't even get cat until 164 guesses and finally got to the answer at 182.

I was flailing until guess 113 when I finally got the second word of the title. Not even from any clues, I was just guessing 3-letter words that came to mind. I flailed around a bit more in and around the category until I finally got it at 157.

I got the second word at 109 pretty much randomly, then solved at 110. Really struggled to get any idea before that.

Multiplayer is live on redactle-unlimited! My husband and I just played a round, you have a unique icon for your guesses but see what other people are uncovering. Really fun.
