MiSTer: the thread of cycle accuracy

In what is probably very good news for everyone except me, the core now has texture perspective implemented. Z-sorting is still hosed and a lot of textures are unimplemented (my presumption is that most of the broken textures are paletted, and since that's not implemented you get a lot of stuff that's just black screen), but things, sadly, don't look quite so weird any more.

next you're going to tell me that they'll have the TLB or whatever sorted out so the CPU doesn't hang on boot for any moderately interesting title

and here I thought "new build in two days with cache" was just on the edge of outlandish

came out yesterday

gotta wonder how many more games properly boot with this latest update

His progress at this point is mind-blowing. I never thought we'd see working N64 on the MiSTer in any form.

I mean, the murmurs for the past couple years were that it was possible, but most of what I'd heard suggested you'd need to BYO CPU to the party. That multiple games are working as well as they are and at or around full-speed is genuinely mind-boggling.

It'll be also very funny if Monday rolls around and a new core rolls around that lets the unmodified Mario 64 rom (i.e., no faceless mario) work

I believe the latest core adds save games. N64 on FPGA is an actual dream. If he adds extra stuff to this core like he did for the PlayStation core it'll be the best way to play N64 games.

Edit: holy crap, he actually did it

He's got to be The Doctor or something, there's no other explanation

👏 MORE 👏 MUTEKI 👏 JOKES 👏

(this is clearly the quickest way to make the core progress)

OK what would *really* be funny would be seeing 64DD support show up in the next week or two

New saturn core coming out at almost the exact same time as the retro bit saturn controller with dual hall-effect joysticks is some glorious news

The F-Zero X expansion is the ideal way to play the game but obviously infeasible for basically everyone, and thank goodness we now have a consistent and easy way to play it.

I mean we joke about "a game loading by Christmas" promises but I didn't think we'd actually get 64DD support within the year because while it's probably not that hard to emulate it's probably not worth the effort to actually build. But hey, it's here*!

At last, we can experience rainbow road properly

* DISCLAIMER: it would appear that "here" means "you can play these games through the same patches you'd use to run them through an N64 flash card, rather than through the DD attachment" if I understand correctly, as I have not had a chance to run these myself.

So has anybody played around with the Saturn core yet? I fired it up for the first time last night and tried out 2-3 games with it. It's really neat! Things seem to run pretty smoothly, but I had some issues with the audio that I assume are due to the WIP nature of the core. None of the hit sounds were audible in Virtua Fighter 2 and, more distressingly, neither were the vocals in Daytona USA (although this could be because I was playing the Championship Circuit edition, as I can't remember if the songs were changed for that release). Either way, it's a very cool addition, and I look forward to spending some time with a few of the more rare Saturn games once the kinks have been ironed out. The core also supports the scandoubler, which means that I can play games on my PC CRT...so long as the console is outputting a 240p image. Saturn seems to alternate between 240p and 480i pretty frequently, so sometimes I could get a picture on my CRT and sometimes I couldn't. But that's still better than the PSX core, which doesn't seem to support the scandoubler at all. Oh well, it's a niche problem for niche people, but niche people is me.

What version of memory do you have? I've got 2.5 and it's got problems much like that. I've heard that the later versions are supposedly better.

It's still a WIP though, and it's playable in almost everything I've thrown at it.

If you mean the lyrics to the songs those would be CD audio in both versions; you're correct that CCE has different music.

(Honestly, I'd probably just run the (D3D-patched) PC port of CCE (Daytona USA Deluxe). With the power of _inmm.dll, you can create custom playlists easily, and I have it set so it can play either the music from the original version or the remixes from the remake. Runs excellently with help from DxWnd, though I wish it was possible to combine running DxWnd with, say, dgvoodoo or similar in order to increase the rendering resolution. It appears to be either one or the other.)

The fact that every N64 game is at least bootable now is crazy to think, especially with how the initial estimate was that we'd only have one game working by Christmas.
