...I feel like I'm forgetting a plot point, but why does Merry's skintone not match either of her parents?

How did Merry end up with darker skin than both her parents?

Eh, skin color genetics aren't *that* simple, it ain't just a light/dark punnet square - entirely possible darker skin just came back out from somewhere on her mom's side.

On skin color, one anecdote: guy at work is half Filipino, passes for white. White spouse. Kid has darker skin than either, and also had a Mongolian spot when she was born.
