I now kind of view Odyssey as being the ideal version of Sunshine; it’s got the same feeling of each world being connected to one another (even if they blatantly are not), each world being just dense with little books and crannies to explore for more stuff; and occasionally the entire world changes entirely after pursuing certain challenges.
Key difference is that, as fun as Cappy is, he never feels vital, so being stripped of him doesn’t feel like a punishment, it just adds a new wrinkle to things. Also, few of the challenges are mandatory; you can pick and choose whatever widget you’re hunting down easily (this goes double for the post game); and while getting a 100% clear is every bit as non-viable, here it’s just because of the sheer breadth of Stuff in the game, not because it’s just a hugely unsatisfying pain in the butt.
64 and Galaxy, as wonderful as they are, feel more like barely connected video game stages, as opposed to a loved in world that just happens to have more lava pits and floating platforms than most cities
