LttP: Super Mario Odyssey - "That's my secret, Cap. I'm always platforming."

Odyssey is fun, but so far I think I prefer Galaxy. It's just more efficient at getting me to The Good Shit - it just throws challenge after challenge at me while Odyssey requires me to go search them out myself. Neither approach is bad - I do get the appeal of exploring - but I get bored more quickly wandering around giant environments looking for puzzles/challenges than if the game just lays them out in front of me with no downtime.

This happened to me with the Odyssey post-game. The worlds don't feel like sandboxes with nooks and crannies to explore, just more pathways to discrete platforming challenges, so I lost interest pretty quickly when the game's main mission was over. Galaxy doesn't bother with the illusion that the challenges are part of an organic whole.

Yeah, I can see that. They don't seem to want to leave you in there though, because of the comets - they want you to bounce around the levels, going back later to where you just were. That's why the hub kind of annoys me - it takes too long to get around. I wish you could like, look at the board behind Rosalina and just warp to whatever area you want to go to next, rather than having to climb up the whole dumb hub (or get the flying star, which I don't even think unlocks until you beat the final Bowser battle).

Especially e s p e c i a l l y when you find a secret Star in any of the 3D games. No! Let me gather it and then continue on getting the star I’m here for already aaaaaugh.

It's been weird, going back to a game where I have to wrestle with the camera a bit - they obviously do a better job with it in Odyssey than in Sunshine, but I kind of liked not having to fuss about the camera too much in Galaxy (underwater levels aside - those can be a bit annoying with the camera imo).

Gaer demands few things in life: a poncy hat, skitter skitter, and (most importantly) camera control. If it’s a 3D movement game give me the camera, you devs don’t know what to do with it and I need to see.

If they can make Skyward Sword work for both you and me, I will eat every hat in Odyssey (dozens, it appears).

I can see them making sword slashes be a button press and a gyro tilt. I think it would work really really well, esp since the Switch has more buttons so you can have basic slashes and add simple gestures with gyro. This Galaxy rework really shows how fine-tuned and the thought they went into it to make it work. I actually have faith.

Imagine TP HD, WW HD, and Skyward Sword “Master Sword Collection” a la this 3D Mario All-Stars. Really though, I was actually interested in the story for Skyward Sword. And the faded watercolour art style (which would be a precursor to BotW’s gorgeous expansion) was incredibly appealing.

But. Those. Controls. I really ought a pay someone for a Wiimote mod where they put the nunchuck analogue stock into it.

There are a number of things that annoyed me about Galaxy 2's green stars but at least the majority of them involved finding creative ways to kill yourself, so you wouldn't actually WANT to keep going normally.

That’s a level design flaw, though.

I thought they did a good job with Galaxy (again, some underwater levels aside). When it's hard to see, that's the point of that particular puzzle, typically. For the most part.

TT's own Troa11 linked me to this a while back (they made it), though I've yet to try it. Supposedly it works really well. I've had it bookmarked since they shared it with me.

Yeah, there was a lot appealing about Skyward Sword, but I absolutely hated playing it. I didn't even know there was a mod to put the analogue stick into the Wiimote... weird!

So, roll credits on Odyssey. I enjoyed it, even if the whole wedding motif was super, super dumb (but it's a Mario game, who cares about plot, right?). The moon was fun, though they were oddly ungenerous with checkpoints, but whatever. I'm going to poke around the post game for sure - Peach's Castle seems intriguing, even if I'm a little disappointed that it seems to be all boss rematches (though I'm sure there's more than that, I haven't explored too deeply, yet). I also want to go back to older worlds and poke around. The game never did explain what those weird rocks were (apparently moon rocks? Maybe they're broken or open or something now). No idea if I'll get everything or even attempt to, but it's nice that there's still more to do if I want to. Great game!

Yeah those weird rocks blocking stuff are post game things. After beating the game they’re all open.

Odyssey reinvented Mario in the same way BOTW reinvented Zelda, by which I mean both of them are the best their particular series has ever been.

Me, agreeing with the skellingtons??

It’s more likely than you think.

Both games reinvented by reassessing the original appeal of games that their respective series had gotten away from, too.

Mario Odyssey is far closer to this than Breath of the Wild, which is now the most overrated game of all time imo.

Imagine if Mario's cap stopped working after like five uses, forcing you to go into the menu or find another one. Or if it started raining and you had to give up on the moon you were trying to get for a while and persue another one.

The game already does a good job of making moons feel worthless that it wouldn't be much of a disappointment. I didn't need rainy weather to decide some parts of the game were just not worth my time and effort.

Also getting Revali's Gale does much to alleviate BotW's issues with climbing in rainy weather, but nothing changed in Odyssey that made me want to go back for things I missed.

Okay now do why Link's weapons breaking is Good Design And Fun For The Player, Actually

(just ignore me, I'm derailing my own thread lol. I like BotW just fine but the hyperbole around it grates)

It’s overtrod ground at this point when it comes to opinions on weapon degradation. At first I found it jarring then I realized they threw so many weapons at you it didn’t matter.

The Legend of Zelda: Love To Open Menus Constantly of the Wild

People complained about equipping the iron boots in Ocarina's Water temple, but love doing the same thing for a whole game in BotW.

(Me losing a weapon in BotW)- "Whelp, guess I'll just pull out one of the other 6 powerful weapons I have on me".

This, basically. Being free of hoarding mentality was nice.

Kazin you just presser the dpad to pick a new weapon while fighting. You don’t need to go into the menu.

Well, sure, I've never seen you complain about that, but it's not an uncommon (or unfair!) complaint about Ocarina.

It had pretty big load time considering it was on a cart. It never bothered me personally.

Sometimes it's nice to know I'm not the only one who feels like Breath of the Wild is holistically meh.

I do love me some Odyssey, though. A whole lot.

Yeah, I'm having fun so far in the endgame. I have ~410 moons right now, apparently something happens at 500.

Super Mario Odyssey was delightful. It was a delight to play, pretty much start to finish. I loved the way it encouraged and rewarded exploration through the excellent level designs, offered a mix of different kinds of puzzles and challenges, the music was great, costumes were fun, the "postgame" was just as great, I loved it.

I don't have a ton of experience with 3D Marios - the only ones I owned previously were Sunshine and Super Mario 3D Land, and I played a tiny bit of Galaxy 2. I liked them all well enough, but Odyssey was the first I've played that actually really grabbed me and made me love it. I'll be giving Galaxy a try when I get 3D All-Stars so we'll see how it holds up.
