I'm playing through the classic Mana games! Let's all go plant trees!(Trials of Mana complete!)

Everything that's been said about this makes me think that the game could have an additional mechanic like FF2/Saga for increasing stats. Is there anything like that in the remake?
You mean leveling up stats with use? Could be interesting as a mechanic atop the existing stat distributing system, but would have to be really carefully balanced to feel worthwhile without being broken.

So Kevin has going through the process of becoming part man and part beast and uses that form to kick dudes?
You could attribute his "Dark" classes as him getting more bestial to land the strongest kicks possible, lol.

I'm not sure exactly what that monster was transformed into but I see it also likes kicking dudes (and dudettes).
Yeah, I only noticed that after the fact, lol. Thankfully it's a lot less stronger than the original monster, or Kevin.

The fairy tries to open the portal at Oblivisle...and fails!

G7Npi73.png

On her second try she succeeds, and the party amusingly acts like they beat a boss, complete with the victory hops and fanfare! But no, the portal activated because of the power unleashed by the elemental stones, which means the villains are planning to enter the holy land!

tle9KMN.png

Sure enough, they get blown up by an airship! Which is piloted by the red wizard of Altena, who sarcastically thanks them for helping them unleash the energy of the stones before bombing them again!

fD8BfqV.png

The beastmen take to the skies with a fleet of birds...

IsoXiTo.png

And the Nevarlan thieves follow suit, with this...curious contraption.

yEJxBeM.png

Amazingly, the party survived the bombings, and in pretty good condition even! They ponder how to get to the sky, until Riesz remembers of a winged protector in her homeland who could carry them on their back!

The party quickly hurries back to her castle, where they get the path to the protector unblocked. A few skirmishes with mountain fowl later, they climb to the very top of the mountain range, where a white dragon awaits!

J0gfEuL.png

After some comedy about misgendering it, Riesz gives it the same name as the dragon of the last game, and it flies them to the holy land in a very elaborate flight sequence.

7C47n9t.png

The villains had already beat them to the holy land, and had fiercely battled with each other, leaving many charred corpses behind. The land itself was full of rabbits, including some royal rabbits that hit surprisingly hard! Thankfully, Hawkeye's form changing spell worked on them, and took out most of the danger. Now this did have the downside of zeroing out their XP, but tbh that wasn't really a concern of mine; winning fights was much more important than extracting any theoretical maximal value from them, and if I found myself in need of levels, I could always just grind them later.

I spent an embarrassingly long time circling around the land, until I caught sight of a lotus pad path I had missed.

DtYDGIZ.png

This led to an elaborate dais, where the fairy explained that the goddess statue atop could be used to change classes, and that the second class change would require getting hands on some special rare items. That sounds really arduous to me, honestly I think I'll just be using action replay codes to get the classes I want when the time is right.

The path continues, and it turns out, I was right to be cheesing the royal rabbits, as they have a multitarget damage move atop their enhanced physical stats! Besides them, however, there was little danger, and the party amazingly got to the Mana tree and the sword before the villains did!

9pSQ97X.png
'

The fairy channeled the power of the stones, and the sword flew gracefully into Hawkeye's hand, entrusting it to him! Well, guess we won. That was a pretty good gam-

aTIZOmK.png

Oh, the fairy got kidnapped somehow, and we need to go rescue her now for reasons. Also, despite our heroics, the Mana tree is going to die soon anyway, so all the goddess can do is give us a drum to call upon the white dragon. Jeez, talk about a depressing conclusion.

Gq3pJLO.png

On the way back, they run into the dark knight, who reveals that his master was defeated, and his forces scattered. Well, nice to have that problem sort itself out, heh.

st5ubGk.png

The clown similarly tells of a powerful foe who felled his master and destroyed his seat of power, and warns them that their arch nemesis awaits them at the holy land's entrance, and has grown powerful beyond belief.

B4WQEMX.png

Horror of horrors, it's the very last set of villains, Isabella, her vampire, and whatever evil king they're working for. They coerce the party to bring the sword in exchange for the fairy's life, and the party can immediately tell this is a setup. Unfortunately, they don't have anything to counter the setup, and are forced to meekly deliver the sword to them.

zVAc8Mk.png

But not before enjoying a ride on their flying steed, which controls a lot more smoothly than its Secret counterpart and has helpful navigational aids, besides. It's still a little awkward, but I got used to it much faster.

Cq5nXlr.png

The villains' reception is, as you can see, less than hospitable. It was kind of surreal to return to Hawkeye's castle after such a long time, and even more surreal to see it populated with high level foes. The evil ninjas were the most dangerous foe of the lot with their multitarget debuffing spells, and I made Hawkeye disable them to save me a good deal of grief.

wGk07o6.png

Hawkeye delivers them the sword, but it rejects them, as they are very clearly evil. They then begin to corrupt the sword to make it accept them, tell the team they will release the ancient beasts to destroy the human world, and then revive their dark master, the ruler of Mavolia. They then vanish, leaving the team with a sickly fairy and a horrible aftertaste.

Welp. Nothing to do but try defeating the beasts.

ovcLpU5.png

I restock, and then elect to go for the beast of the fire dungeon, as it's the closest dungeon nearby. It was guarded by duckmen and evil ninjas, both of whom were quite vicious. The evil ninjas did their usual debuffs, and the duckmen threw weapons for high damage, and had powerful melee strikes besides. It didn't help that later, they were joined by fire lizards, who, with the presence of meatshields, proved to be an absolute threat with their fire breath!

D56CCkn.png

Still, the team was resilient enough to power through the dungeon, where they reached their first ancient beast, a giant cloud of many flames! It changes into many forms, and, predictably, throws out powerful fire spells and moves with each form. It also has a furnace like structure in the middle, into which it sometimes retreats to heal itself. At about the halfway point, it borrows a nasty little trick from the elemental gigases(gigai?) in Secret of Mana, and enchants their weapons with fire, making their strikes heal it! It was definitely a fight worthy of its reputation; the party did win it, but only at the cost of most of their supplies and some careful application of revives.

Y8FtDz3.png

The fairy plays spoilsport and informs them that, though they may have defeated an ancient beast, they can't rest on their laurels; there are still seven of them left, and they only grow stronger with time! Their quest to save the world from ancient evils shall continue...next time! For now, the session ends here.

Iirc, the plant Holy Beast can heal itself, so I kept in the back of my mind to defeat it first. I remember a VERY drawn out battle with it, when keeping the battle for later.

This might also be wrong, as it's been so long.

I don't remember the Wood beast healing, but do remember Light healing itself and being a pain. I know Wood was tough for me in one playthrough but not in another so probably depends on your party/items. As an aside I do think all these bosses are some of the coolest pixel art on the SNES.

The one I also struggled with was Moon, I think the attacks/magic were just really weird and I wasn't prepared to deal with it.

I seem to remember ultimately deciding to just look up guides and stock up on the items most useful for undoing/reflecting the various Benevodon debuffs and attacks.

Taking a peek at a guide, VV should be right, it's apparently the Light one who heals himself. Which is a pain.

Don't remember specifics of the others. But yeah, they look great.

IKppaLS.png

I tackled the Shining Ruins next, as they were the closest dungeon nearby. The enemies inside proved to be extremely tough, however, forcing me to backtrack!

glVCCci.png

It turns out, I had been missing a significant upgrade from the elven village all along! Just look at that hefty boost, especially to magic defense! This immediately made a significant difference, scaling the damage numbers down to something more reasonable, though still dangerous. I also altered everyone's AI to use their second special move, as their first was clearly no longer cutting it.

I also broke out another one of Hawkeye's spell against the opposition - Sleep Flower. This put enemies to sleep, and while that was usually not a great status effect, as the enemy would be woken up by any application of violence, it did serve to break up the formations here. I could've used Body Change, but the level of these foes made it pretty clear that they severely outclassed my team, and I need the experience!

That, along with a combination of aggressive application of debuffs, seemed to work really well, and soon they began gaining ground.

Be6TJCw.png

Deeper into the ruins, they stumbled upon this curious set of slabs. The slabs didn't seem to react to them, merely freezing the game for a single frame.

yDEpmvq.png

Thankfully, the game gives away the answer just ahead, on an anachronistically pinned paper note. I also randomly discover that the magic jellyfish have a really, really nasty trick up their sleeve - they can moogle the entire party at once! Oof.

The party made some progress, but their supplies were quite depleted, and I could tell they wouldn't last against the boss with their current stock, so they beat a retreat and restocked.

The temple was quite circuitous, so I spent a fair bit of time circling around in confusion. Eventually though, I found the way forward to the beast, and a golden statue before it.

6ZywsnM.png

The beast certainly had an incredible look. Gameplay wise, it obviously had a lot of light themed moves, some of which were weak and some of which were powerful. It also had a lot of evasion, and kept jumping and teleporting a lot, making hitting it rather frustrating. To top it all off, it also had an aoe moogling move that dealt damage, often instantly putting the party in peril. It also could enchant their weapons with holiness, and debuffed their attack, making it extra aggravating. Thankfully, I brought Stardust Herbs this time around, which cancelled these effects and made it a bit less annoying.

About halfway through, it started healing itself. This would be annoying normally, but I actually welcomed it, because it did it in lieu of debuffing attack or enchanting weapons. The party could also keep up decently well with its heals, and, though most of their supplies had been exhausted, they eventually eked out another win!

DIuqidY.png

The next closest god beast was around Laurent, according to the map. While looking around for it, the team stumbled across this cat, who is part of a pair of cats, and was once Neko's girlfriend. They sell our next set of equipment, I upgrade all the armor, which leaves no money for the weapon upgrades. Ah well, it'll have to do.

The wind dungeon had upgraded its enemies to level 32, clearly indicating that it was the way forward. Thankfully, despite the level upgrade, the enemies had no real tricks, nor did they hit too hard, and it was but a matter of time before the team retraced their steps back to its final room.

1cjJHHp.png

The wind beast was actually a dragon, who had to be fought while atop our dragon's back! It had four phases, and a lot of health, but its actual moves weren't that impressive, mostly being just a series of mediocre wind themed moves. One of them debuffed defense, which kinda stung, I guess? It was mostly just a battle of attrition, and certainly a lot less threatening than the god beasts they had already fought, so winning it was just a matter of time.

B0RPyqv.png

The next closest beast was in a tower within the moon forest, and it didn't hesitate to bare its fangs, with one of the werewolves unleashing a powerful party wide kick and nearly demolishing them! I immediately burnt some poto oils, and debuffed their attack, making them much more manageable.

That said, the tower is actually fairly short and repetitive, though not short enough to prevent the repetitiveness from getting annoying. The upshot of this, though, is that it doesn't take long for them to get to its top.

JEa6YOe.png

The moon beast makes a dashing appearance, climbing up the tower's side itself! It had a fair selection of dangerous attacks, including aoe moves that lowered the party's max HP or hit rate, a move that hit for exactly half their HP, and even a move that miniaturized them! Thankfully, Stardust herbs could reverse the worst effects, and the team by now had enough bulk and punch to see him through without any serious unpleasantness emerging.

And with that, this session ends. Four beasts down, four more to go!

It seems like this forum's attention will be diverted for a while, as there's some big ticket stuff coming up, particularly the release of Suikoden 1 and 2's remasters. In light of that, I'm wondering if I should delay posting updates, or continue following my schedule? Please let me know what update schedule you would prefer.

The forum can support several things that it's excited about at once. You don't need to delay things unless you personally want to.

Do whatever makes sense for you. I appreciate your updates and am looking forward to them whenever they come.

This part of the game seems more straight forward in that it's a series of dungeons along with the benevoden encounter. It feels in similar to the back half of Secret of Mana where you just book it to 3-4 seeds in a row. There you complained of it feeling rushed and boring. How do you feel so far about this stretch in Trials??

I been reading the updates but not chatting because I'm not super familiar with this game.

Yeah, it doesn't take that long, to look at updates here, I don't think anyone will stop. Just keep going, except if you want to take a break.

I'm also curious, how you like this game, compared to SD 1 and 2, but considering where you are, I thought it would make more sense, to just wait until you are done.

Thanks for your input! I'll try to get the next update out tomorrow.

Also learnt that "midget" is an offensive word, so edited it out of one of my earlier posts. Sorry for that!

Yeah don't stop posting just because some people might be playing a new game. The forums survive new Zeldas just fine and I swear that consumes everyone, ha.

And I appreciate you editing words out once you learn about them!

On another note, I just realized this isn't in the Let's Play subforum, should it be moved there?

Ah. The thing is, I thought my write ups here would be too "informal" to count as actual LPs, hence why I opened the thread here and not in that subforum. But if people think these are good enough as LPs, then sure, I see no problem. Though I doubt I have the power to move threads to other forums...

FelixSH

(He/Him)
I mean, does it matter? I would guess that everyone who is interested has already found the thread.

And yeah, I assumed this was more like my FF thread (hence the not unsimilar title), even if it's clearly more lp-y than what I did. But also, it's not like an lp has to be something specific, you are showing off everything, rarely let people even decide, it's totally an lp, as far as I'm concerned. But again, don't think it matters much, in which subforum it is.

I think this thread is fine, and also vote to keep updating. We've all got ADHD anyway, we can pay attention to multiple things over time!

The next beast is located in a strange part of the Molebear Moors that can only be visited via dragon. The cats show up again here, and they sell upgraded equipment again, but the weapons cost far too much to acquire, so I settle for the armor now.

LCwonpv.png

The moors lead to a gem filled cavern populated by enemies with high defense that could also debuff the party's attack. Needless to say, this was absolute murder for my physically oriented team! I had to take fights slowly and spam a lot of defense debuffs, and even then, the dungeon exerted a fair bit of attrition. It didn't help that, despite their high defenses, the enemies here actually had some fairly nasty moves up their sleeve, like a multitarget poison breath, a poison inflicting spell that also hit really hard, and a melee move that did half the character's HP in damage!

Needless to say, this was the least enjoyable dungeon in the game so far, despite its pretty looks. I was not sad to see it end.

ojyCgQ9.png

The earth beast was, interestingly enough, a sentient robot of some sort. Its main tricks are to halve the HP of a character, and also sometimes put them to sleep. These aren't threatening on their own, but combined with its regular attacks, some of which are multitarget, it can actually kill the party fairly easily. Thankfully, those attacks were somewhat underpowered, aside from a petrifying gas cloud that did a lot of damage. Despite the somewhat depleted supplies, the team had enough to withstand its tricks, and won.

zh6lrZQ.png

The next dungeon was thankfully a lot more reasonable, as most of the opponents were sea and ice themed creatures who mostly attacked in melee and had a fair distribution of stats. There were still some challenges, like swordmasters unleashing a powerful multitarget slice after enchanting their weapon, the ice dragons having a freezing breath, and the fishmen having an attack debuff as well as a multitargeted trident throw, but all in all, these were farrrr more reasonable and a welcome change from the "challenges" of the gem cavern.

My party was starting to run into an unexpected problem, where they began hitting the caps for their most relevant stats and so had to choose between a bunch of stats that were of secondary importance. Thankfully, they also got up to level 37 before the beast, and it would likely put them over the top, or get them close enough that they could easily get the next level with a tiny bit of grinding.

fHZq8C9.png

Speaking of, the ice beast isn't very impressive. Its main gimmick, if it can be called that, is to periodically jump behind the glacier, where it can't be reached by melee attacks but can hurl back spells. This was a little aggravating for my party, but luckily it didn't abuse this much. It also had a spell that froze characters, but didn't use it that often. Its spells were mildly powerful, but at this point they were far from being a serious threat, and the party easily overcome it.

JA2N79g.png

This brought them to level 38, another decisive moment in their journey, as they could upgrade classes for a second time! I cheated in the class upgrade items so as to not grind for them, and also set things up for this vote. In order:

Riesz can choose between:

Dragon Master: This gives her a powerful multitarget summon that can poison all enemies it hits.

Fenrir Knight: This gives her multitarget debuffs, in exchange for a worse summon that only deals damage. Seems like the no brainer choice for her, though I am mildly curious about Dragon Master's summon. Amusingly, it also gives her a really saucy outfit, at least in her character model in the menus.

Hawkeye can choose between:

Nomad: Carries a wide variety of strange buffs and spells, including the ability to buff and debuff max HP, reflect back spells, fill up the gauge for special moves, and more. Since the oddball spells were what I picked Ranger for, I'm inclined to go with this option.

Rogue: Turns him into some sort of projectile spammer that conjures and throws magical shit at enemies. Has a decent variety of elements, and could be good if the projectiles aren't blocked by defense, but I feel like Riesz's summons should be able to deal with any physically durable foes, going forward.

Lastly, Kevin has the choice of either:

Enlightened: Gives him life steal as a weapon enchantment, which sounds extremely good to pass up. I'd personally go for this.

or

Fatal Fist: Gives him a spell that boosts critical hit rate considerably. This could potentially be good, but I doubt it's as good as life steal, and Hawkeye can get that spell as a Nomad, so, meh.

I didn't bring up the stat differences because, to be quite honest, they are pretty minimal, the spells and abilities are what distinguish them.

Vote for the classes of your choice in bold. I give about three days.

Oh, I didn't realize this was an informal one! That makes sense then. I thought it was formal and wanted to make sure you were getting counted and such.

This is one of the most memorable designs for me. I read it as powered by the gems on it and it's menacing and metallic in a cool way.

The Dwarven Spheres in Skyrim struck me as similar too.

I have no strong preferences on the classes other than which names sound the most rad! But I would not inflict that on another person. Your preferences for Fenrir Knight, Nomad, and Enlightened are good enough for me, unless someone has an actual argument for going with something different (need an ability for a boss, that class is bugged, oops you forgot healing, etc)

Let's see...
If you think you'll use the debuffs, go Fenrir Knight. If not, go Dragon.
I would go for the more straightfoward(?) Rogue, personally, based on those descriptions. But if you actually want the crazy buffs etc. then I won't vote against Nomad either.
Enlightened for life drain seems like the straightforward choice to me too.

Turns out I'm too wishy-washy to vote meaningfully. Ah well.

According to the internet, Rogue seems to be one of the worst classes in the game. I have no idea if that is true, but I don't want you to suffer, so I'll vote for Nomad.
Fatal Fist sounds cooler than Enlightened.
Dragon Master has dragon in the title, so it wins by default.

Dragon Master: This gives her a powerful multitarget summon that can poison all enemies it hits.
The poison is in addition to the damage, right? Is poison worth it in this game?

Let's go with Nomad. May as well commit to using the oddball spells if we've already came this far.

Enlightened so then we can have vampiric werewolf kicks. Also, I was joking about this earlier but I realized there is an existing precedent from Capcom:

Does Kevin have a cape accessory?

So far, I have clear votes for Hawkeye's and Kevin's classes. But Riesz's class is still up in the air, and there is but one day left before I upgrade them to their last classes. If possible, try and get some votes for her class, and for the others too, if you're so inclined.

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
Oh wait did I not vote oops.

Dragon Master, because I always found it better and because Fenrir Knight's bikini armor is gross.

I know you've decided Hawk and Kevin's classes, but I would vote Nomad and Fatal Fist. Moon saber backfires on undead enemies and hurts you instead while giving enemies your HP, I think there's a few enemies who casts it on you to buff themselves (you might have run into this already when going up the Moon tower?). I didn't use it much and you're about to deal with a number of undead enemies in the final area if I remember correctly so it won't be useful. You'll want other saber abilities to get rid of it a lot honestly.

Not really related, but one of the things I was disappointed about is that in 16 bit sprites, I read Riesz's starting outfit as a suit of green chain or scale and not... A leotard?

Yeah, there's a bizarre dissonance between her concept art and her in game sprite, especially since all of her body armor is various suits of chain or plate. It's like they wanted to make her a warrior woman but couldn't decide to fully commit to the bit, undecided on whether they wanted her to wear actual armor or make her outfit horny.
