I was wrong for 20+ years, I'm sorry. Secret of Mana is a good game.

That's an excellent description. Another good point of comparison is the first Mass Effect. Sort of action, but there's also dice rolls going on under the hood, so it is indeed a bit of a hybrid. I feel like there was a lot of misunderstanding about how that game worked, too, on release. It looks like a standard third-person shooter.

It's not quite a full action game like it's often described, it's a weird hybrid of action and turn based.

I'll say that type of game is not for me. I either want a full on action game or a full on turn based game.

Similarly, I played about 30 minutes of Dragon Age and gave up on it. Pausing and un-pausing an action game (or not quite action game) to cast spells or issue new commands kills the flow of a game for me.

However, I'm glad the game works for you. As I said in my initial post, the graphics and sound are great. I wish the game play worked for me.

Have you tried the Dragon Age sequels? They feel a lot more action-y to me, especially the second game.

I have not. I'll also say that western RPGs are a big blindspot for me.

I've not played Fallout, Skyrim, Mass Effect, the Witcher or the Dragon Age sequels. A friend lent me his copy of Dragon Age which is why I tried it.

I did like the idea in Dragon Age that you started as different races and that dramatically impacted your experience. However the gameplay was not for me.

I don't have anything against those games. Its more like too little time and too many games I would like to play.

Oh, I completely understand that! I only really got into Dragon Age because I really enjoyed BioWare's prior output. I've barely touched the Bethesda games, but I did enjoy the heck out of Mass Effect. And while you might not end up liking the first Mass Effect, the sequels make the game a proper cover shooter, and I think the remaster also changes the first game to be more consistent with the sequels.
