The argument that FFXVI doesn't feel/look/have the same tone as a "real" FF game is made suspect by the fact that many of the other games in the franchise we are comparing it to were once also accused of not being "real" FF games. I can't help but see this as part of an inevitable cycle with FF games. When FFXVII is announced we will be comparing it to XVI, because by then we will have just largely accepted XVI as an FF game.

I don't know, despite many assertions otherwise, I've never really accepted there being meaningful connections between games in the series besides the name and the aesthetic trappings we all know (chocobos, moogles, crystals). I just remember this argument being thrown out in criticism of FFXII (not by TTers, to be clear) so many times that I've come to reflexively dismiss it.

Thing is, FFXVI is just one assless chap away from looking like Vagrant Story, and thus really close to FFXII. The art in the website has a lot if XII vibes. I honestly don't get the complaints that it doesn't look like a FF.

Square's pipeline in the last 20 years was such a nightmare that a FF hitting all its milestones within schedule make me nervous and worried about when will the other shoe drop.

...Maybe Strangers In Paradise: Chaos Dies At The End is the karmic sacrifice the universe demands to have a sane dev cycle for FF again 🤔

Like I keep repeating, FFXIV has had exactly two delays in eight years. Yoship has transformed management at S-E.

Yeah, the man has savant level skills as a project manager. If they're firmly in the content creation/polishing stage of development, then they've already done the hard stuff like mechanical decisions/implementation and so on.

People who don't play FF14: 16 is gonna be a trainwreck, isn't it :(

People who do play FF14: CANNOT WAIT FOR GUARANTEED GODTIER SINGLE PLAYER FF

Was it, though? Was it really?
I mean look, YoshiP's development philosophy and work ethic is just the best thing that's happened to SE since they made the original FF. That's all, nbd. (just in case I'll clarify I am being completely genuine when I say this, except for the sarcastic nbd at the end).

Yeah, I don't get the passive aggressivess here; the joke with S-E has always been their perennial inability to deliver on any sort of stated timeframe, meanwhile, Yoshi-P's major claim to fame is not only rigorously keeping his projects on schedule for almost a decade at this point but also said projects having increasing claims to fame and critical acclaim.

Like, sure, "lol, MMO bad/not for me/etc" I get it, but the guy's managed to right a sunken ship that blew up into a thousand pieces and then turn it into one of the flagship titles of the company. There will probably be all kinds of software process guys looking to interview him for decades on how he did it from a managerial perspective. Give him (and us) a bit of credit.

Honestly at this point I'd be surprised if FFXIV weren't the primary moneymaker that helps Squex remain profitable after multiple combinations of top-budget AAA bombs.

The thread title will stay until people start talking more about FFXVI than YoshiP.

In all seriousness, you know who's running this project, right? Talking about Yoship is talking about FF16.

This is super passive aggressive and shitty, thanks. Let’s recap:
  • Trailer released and comparisons to Game of Thrones, looks shitty, grim dark
  • FFXIV players being excited because the team is very talented not to mention the producer who not only turned around FFXIV but made work from home a permanent option for S-E in Japan, explain why
  • mmo bad, lol
  • When more news is announced, is posted
  • Passive-aggressive title change

And once again, literally every single person who bitched about the original trailer would have shat and/or jizzed their pants if Matsuno was making it.

But hey, it’s your thread. I’ll just stop posting in it.

Especially since the last few news bits about XVI have mostly been direct statements from him, it's not like SE has posted any trailers recently.

He's not the director, nor is he doing writing or other creative duties here. He deserves credit for captaining a tight ship and keeping his projects on task. But these kinds of productions have a lot of people's fingers all over them, and the focus on *just* YoshiP here - for good and bad - is kinda bizarre to an onlooker.

It would be nice to have something of more substance to discuss about this game, but they're keeping a tight lid on the production so it's not like there's anything else to talk about so I get it.

And once again, literally every single person who bitched about the original trailer would have shat and/or jizzed their pants if Matsuno was making it.

And also, for the record, five months after this trailer was posted, and I expressed reservations about what little information we had (namely, GoT comparisons not because of the violence, but because of politics across many different kingdoms, empires, and factions; and belief that the single named female character we've seen would "get Tietra'd so hard" to provide conflict) I actually started playing the aforementioned "mmo lol".

Since then, I've fully converted to the church of Hydaelyn. XIV is chock-full of politics among at least 10 nations (and counting, and that's even before we get into noble houses and corporate interests) and it juggles them magnificently; and there's strongly-written, fully developed female characters across all ages, roles, occupations, and narrative purposes. Hell, there's more and better written characters, period, than in any other single installment of the franchise you'd care to name. And this isn't even getting into the worldbuilding and historical lore that deftly mix armor-plated knights and muddy medieval peasants and nomadic tribes with Culture-level super sci-fi and space travel and genetic experimentation, though I've never really worried about that since it wouldn't be a Final Fantasy without a seamless combination of the concepts.

So yeah, expectations are sky-high now.

The director is the assistant director of Heavensward, the first major expansion after the 2.0 reboot. Many veteran XIV players consider the 2.x route kind of a slog (I personally loved it) but everyone agrees that 3.0 was where XIV really came into its own and became the Critically-Acclaimed MMO from the memes. Pun not intended, hype is still sky-high.

True in more ways than one!
Per Wikipedia:
Yoshida is an Executive Officer at Square Enix, the Head of Square Enix's Creative Business Unit III and part of the Final Fantasy Committee that is tasked with keeping the franchise's releases and content consistent.

So not only is Yoshi-P the Producer of FF16, he's also part of managing the entire FF brand!

He's running the project, though. He's producing. He's relevant for production. And yeah... there's not much else to talk about at the moment.
