VIIR would be ideal, but I’m expecting a more polished XV. If it ends up being just one guy hopefully they do a Lightning Returns where it still feels like you’re juggling a party.

I'm further out on the limb expecting something past even Dragon's Dogma. Though the trailer didn't give me the impression we'd have a party so I'm not expecting one, I also wouldn't be at all surprised if there was a small AI party of some sort.

I'm most interested in how parts of the moveset seem to be based on Phoenix. FF and Dragon's Dogma both have job systems to draw from to customize character abilities so job-switching like in Lightning Returns definitely seems like a solid way to handle it.

If it's not released in 2022, it makes me wonder what S-E's big release is going to be for this year, provided they have one.

Well, that very article reminded me we’re supposed to be getting Forspoken in October, the Luminous productions game that looks like taking FF ideas in a completely action/parkour direction. Interested in how that one turns out. Guess at some point I’ll actually have to buy a PS5 or something.

I think they are trying to push Forspoken, as Kirin mentioned, but otherwise it's kind of a small handful of B-listers -- Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, that other new IP tactics game, Front Mission remake, Live-a-Live remake -- so I don't think they have a known Big Release if FF16 isn't it.

I've got a really bad feeling about that one. It looks like SE sunk a lot of money and time into this game, but it's an unproven IP (and gamers in general don't like taking risks on new IPs), from the FFXV team that already has an iffy reputation among vocal fans, it's got a main character that looks really interesting but is also a female minority so it's going to be the target/inspire a lot of a lot of bad faith complaints from the wrong crowd, and so far of what they've shown of the game, the story doesn't immediately sound like much of a draw and the open world looks kinda empty. Feels like a big money sink for a company that's already struggling *hard* with cash atm. Best case scenario I can see is that they manage to convince MS to pay them a bunch of money for gamepass exclusivity or something to recoup costs.

On the one hand, that would suck because I’m definitely not buying an Xbox. On the other, it’d give me another year to get around to buying a PS5. 😅

Man, you can tell it's the FFXIV team behind this. From the political intrigue to the corny and cool segnment at the end introducing the Eikons - Koji Fox and Soken still haven't found a proper noun they cannot cram into a chorus. I'm really hyped for this, even if the guy I assume is the protagonist still looks generic as hell. At least the villain appears to be very punchable, will enjoy seeing him getting skewered by the Real Villain at the end of the first act because no way that Emperor is the real True Bad - he doesn't even have a ridiculous helmet.

Whoops, didn't see that we have a dedicated thread. To cross-post from the FF General thread:

I haven't played a Final Fantasy game since 13, but that new trailer looks kinda sick? It looks like the conceit is that the classic FF summons are just... people who can turn into kaiju and then beat the shit out of armies/each other? And I think the trailer is implying that your MC is Ifrit? I'm down to be Ifrit. Colour me tentatively intrigued.

I think the trailer implies you'll get to be many summons, so we are probably looking at a multiple playable cast. The one-to-one duels had several different summons in the "player" side during the trailer.

Also, Ramuh looks badass here. And Titan is an *accountant*!. Well, "economical advisor". That's dope

Can't help but recall the Metal Gear Rex versus Ray fight in Metal Gear Solid 4. Got excited at the mere thought so this could be fun.

Amusing if true, especially given that Ifrit was more or less explicitly Satan in FFXV.

Meanwhile in XIV Ifrit is basically just a boring tutorial for boss fights and has the weakest theme song of any primal fight.

Surprised that it looks more like Devil May Cry than Final Fantasy. I knew that it would have some action elements, but I thought it would be like FF XIII or FF VII remake where you have to make strategic decisions in real-time. (I haven't played FF VII remake yet, but that's the impression I got from it.)

Is FF XVI combat straight up combos and button mashing?

The Combat Director has previous credits working on Dragon's Dogma and Devil May Cry 5 (plus a bunch of "Planner" credits from 2000s-era Capcom fighters), and the footage from this trailer certainly makes it seem button heavy. But also, Yoshi-P has said before they are trying to make sure non-action gamers can still play it successfully. I'm sure we'll found out eventually what that entails.

Now I'll be disappointed if Ramuh doesn't turn out to be an eight year old girl.

I don't know what to think. I feel like they haven't shown enough to get excited OR not excited about. I am nonplussed, but there's high potential here. The summon "gameplay" looks like a bunch of cutscenes, so much so that I wonder if it's completely turn based? I dunno, whatever, it can't be any worse than XIII or XV so I'll try it

Looks identical to what this game has communicated from the start. One spoken line by a woman and barely any visual appearances to go with it. No cause to really conjecture about women's roles in this when they are not allowed to exist in the first place, except as war-worriers, bedside companions and transformation fodder for the nuder-than-others deities.

Really skeptical of the game's affected po-faced tone too in context of what looks like an eidolon fight club with all this fighting game UI hammering in the impression. There's been no sign of deliberate levity in all the promotion up to this point, which can work in cases like Vagrant Story that this game directly looks toward, but that had the benefit of unusually intimate scale--if this is going to be a prolonged epic and yet another war narrative, that can easily turn investment into wearying self-seriousness.

I get that this game has some big respected names behind it, but even after watching the video a few times I'm just not feeling it. Just piles and piles of big flashy fight scenes where I can't even tell what the hell's going on, and I'm not as sold on the whole "People can turn into the latest iterations of the same few summons (and Garuda)" thing.

We've seen like, a combined 5 mins of a game that'll be 60+ hours to beat. I'm going to reserve judgment until after I've gotten my hands on it and start actually experiencing it.

A country named Rozerria? A desert kingdom called Dalmachia? An evil empire? This is FFXII with the numbers filed off.

Nice to see some gameplay footage; unfortunately, I'm in the tiny minority who really wanted to see the return to party-based, menu-based combat. I don't think it's meant to be in this day and age.

I think some of the developers might have seen Game of Thrones.

As someone with limited exposure to the franchise, I have to ask: Does this look like Final Fantasy to fans of the games? It seems too grim for a series where an octopus tries to drop a weight on a lady during an opera.

I think it's fair to say that what you are describing is representative of the average detractor viewpoint.

It's also fair to say that this is a darker turn for the series, but it's a series that defines itself by defying expectations. In contrast to Dragon Quest, a series where you know how the next game will feel and play even before it's been released, the Final Fantasy formula is that there is no Final Fantasy formula. I don't think we'll see many moogles in this installment, but that's consistent with the more grounded entries like X and XIII, just... more so.
