This time I’m sure to not get blindsided by any surprise releases because there’s a Nintendo Direct scheduled to drop before I’m likely to hit the Post button! Furthermore I’m also freshly dosed with DayQuil and have to walk the dog shortly. So my day is full of interesting challenges already.
So let’s kick things off with the first new releaseof the Coming Soon tab; and you just *know* it’s a first person dungeon crawler based on a popular anime with a big focus on surviving in a treacherous monster filled dungeon with dwindling resources; Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation: Quest of Memories! I ain’t watched it but context clues tell me it’s an isekai with a guy what wakes up in a place with a monster dungeon and a real hankering to base his new life around the relevant economics of that.
Enjoy playing a video game about a guy who prefers being in a video game to being a guy who plays video games!
Echo Generation is next and it’s one of those games that Microsoft published and then said “Ah you guys can have This’un”. And I say “Gee, thanks, mister!” Since this looks great! It’s got some real Earthbound energy to it, though, judging from the trailer, about 20% less whimsical. And with Voxels instead of sprites. I’m waiting for impressions (“Looks Like Earthbound” has, historically, not been the safest bet in the land) but it’s definitely in my wishlist.
Moonstone Island is next and instead of merely adopting the styles of one quirky, popular basis for indie games, it takes the buffet approach and tries to mush together Stardew Valley, and Slay the Spire, and Pokemon, and Zelda and Animal Crossing and… that’s just from reading a couple of bullet points in the eShop.
Basically if you’ve liked any game to not prominently feature guns released in the last decade, you’re covered here.
Scars of Mars is another one I’m keeping a curious eye on, but which is also really hard to peg down mechanically just looking at screenshots. It’s from the same peeps as what made Octopath and, umm, Ancient Weapon Holly so that’s at least half a noteworthy pedigree. It’s a roguelite RPG with real time combat; that’s about all I can say. Battle screens kind of look like Mega Man Star Force…
Sometimes not doing research has its drawbacks. I ain’t gonna change but I am gonna acknowledge it.
Dicefolk is next and just looking at it made me say “Dicefolk? More like NICEfolk!”. Like the aforesaid Moonstone, it’s a mash-up of several other games that I really like but only two this time (Pokemon and Dungeons of Aether) and it does some neat things with that combination, such as letting you control both your team and the enemy team woth command chosen via d6 rolls. I’ve heard great things about it and was really hoping it would get a console release. AND GUESS WHAT, IT DID!
Speaking of games to get a console port, eventually, we have Darkstar One. Which I guess did get a console port on the original Xbox way back when. Anyway, this here is a pew pew style spaceship trader-em-up, like your Elites and the like. It’s a pretty underrepresented genre on the Switch, but it is represented by Rebel Galaxy Outlaw and No Mans Sky, so… umm… I feel like it may have some harsh competition as a rerelease of a game between the space trader heyday and its resurgence.
Visit of these, those stars of space and be one of those who do dare explore its mysteries.
Now what if you want to explore but have crippling n agoraphobia. Why, outerspace is the last place you’d like to be; you’d prefer the safe confines of a big hole! Filled with dirt! Well good, because Cave Digger 2 is out to make your incredible “Dig a hole” fantasies come true!
Visit scenic “a hole” and go down it! If you have friends you can also invite them into the hole! There’s some stuff in the hole too, you can kill it for rewards, because that’s video games, baby!
Go down a hole and explore and murder your way back out of it, eh?
That sounds like a good game, but what about the Great Game? That incredible sport that made horses popular and kept the duplicitous owners of butt-toys off the streets where their wiles could do the most harm. I speak of course, of Chess. But I actually am not because I’m actually speaking of The Ouroborus King. Which takes the game of Chess and says “Not complicated enough” and adds in a bunch of new pieces and game modifying relics because it’s Slay the Spire except Chess!
Now, if you’re anything like me, when you watch cheers, the only think on your mind is “Why isn't Norm a werewolf? And sure there’s an hateful woman named Lilith but she isn’t a vampire? And where’s the dang warlocks?”. To that end, may I suggest Tavern Talk, a talley style adventure game where you run a magical fantasy RPG tavern and chat with the patrons and mix them up some weird drinks so they’ll want to tell your their life story more… and then send them out on adventure by quests so they’ll need to drink more to cope!
And I infer you can also Romance your clientele if you’re so inclined, but I’m pretty sure that’s an HR issue.
Speaking of ethical lapses in an established business, how about some good ol’ fashioned yellow journalism, such as what you’d find in Times & Galaxy, where YOU get to make the news! By taking the stories that other people tell you and making them much more sensational so you can move more papers. And, as a full one third of the title implies, you aren’t doing this for some rinky dink reason like “because William Hurst wants to declare war on Spain”, but because you’re readership extends to outer space itself!
The very opposite of “a hole in the ground” as previously indicated in this very post!
Interview people, ask those wonderful 5 W questions, and then say “You know what would make this story more interesting? Lies.”
Egg Console: Tritorn is the most recent port of an old Japanese PC RPG that is the Egg Consoles bread and butter! In this case the lack of English text isn’t too much of an impediment as Tritorn is much more of the Tower of Druaga/Demon Crystal mold.
Travel through scenic “a tower?” And bust up some monsters who behave in such a foolish was as to impede your transversal of a tower. Then kill the evil god who lives there, since you’re going to be busted for trespassing anyway.
Finally we’ve got some new games in the NSO, announced during that direct I took a break in the middle of writing this post to watch! Theyre all on the Expanadion Pass of the NSO, and half them made me go “Oh boy oh boy!” And that half are the ones on the GBA; Metroid Zero Mission, my… number three favorite Metroid game, and a remake of the original that just expanded things every which way, and The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past: Four Swords, which is a port of LttP, but scales down for a tinier screen, BUT ALSO, with a co-op multiplayer mode added that I only ever got to properly play, like, once, but it was hella fun when I did.
And on the N64 we’ve got Turok Dinosaur Hunter and Perfect Dark, which I’m sure are just about impossible to play on a Switch controller, if every other N64 game is any indication. There’s also a greatly improved remaster of Turok already in the eShop, so… y’know… there’s options.
I think that’s everything? Imma say it is, at least.
