Digital Down-Low for 03/09/2024: Fireballs and Lightning are Raining from the Sky.

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption
(He/Him)
What’s you‘re favourite stock sound effect. I have to say it’s the “sproi-oi-oi-oing” you get when a cartoon watch falls apart

It’s the start of March, which traditionally comes in like a lion, and therefor, we’re kicking things off with Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties: Remastered. The eShop describes it as the first American produced Visual Novel, which I question the validity of, but I don’t know enough about the genre to say either way.

Visit scenic CD-Rom Era Burbank (presumably) with John, the least-shirt-wearingest plumber this side of Mario in that One Beach Level as he romances his way into the heart of the fair Jane, she of a troubled bathroom and/or sink.

Look, all I know about the game is grainy 1993 CD Rom Graphics of a Muscley Man With No Shirt and that it’s rated M for Nudity and Sexual Themes. Have to make some educated guesses here.

Speaking of men, they often begin as boys. And those boys? Sometimes they go beserk. And for those proud, berserk, boys, we have Berserk Boy. This here is a Mega Man-em-up BUT with the key difference that it kind of looks more like Mighty No. 9. Which is kind of like expecting ice cream and instead getting a big ol’ hunk of butter doled out with an ice cream scoop.

Which happened to me once, it’s very easy to fool a small child and Tiny Octo did not enjoy his pancakes that day, let me tell you.

Anyway, Jump and Slide through a Monsteropolis chock full of BADBOYBOTS and then steal boss monsters’ weapons for yourself BUT ALSO, there’s a big focus on dive-tackling enemies to rack up a higher score multiplier.

Now, what if you didn’t want to play as a boy, but instead, a girl. But the level of berserk mess is relatively similar. Well, good news because Ancient Weapon Holly is next and it delivers on that promise. It’s a Rogue-em-up from the peeps as what made Octopath apparently, and it stars a l’il robogal. Who is also a sentient apocalypse-weapon and was buried at the bottom of a monster and trap filled dungeon designed to keep her from ever reaching the outside world since her entire reason for existing is to wipe out the entire human race and everyone who built her realized that they *maybe* shouldn’t have built something like that.

Anyway, it’s a Dungeon Crawling Roguelike Heiyankyo Alien where you have to Destroy Humanity.

And speaking of destroying humanity, doing something like that would require a great big cry that could swallow up the ocean. A great big eye that focuses in your direction. Yes, you’d have to stand on the over-sight to see the ogre fight, if you come to the Ogre Battle tonight. But there ain’t a new Ogre Battle game coming any time soon, so instead we have Unicorn Overlord, which is pretty much the same thing but with a different fantasy monster in the title.

It’s the RTS/RPG hybrid gameplay that made the original Ogre Battle so dang great, but it actually explains the games mechanics so you know what you’re doing, and it’s from Vanillaware Peeps (just with the horniness cranked way down) so it plays great. Based on the demo alone it went from a game I was going to wait for a sale on to something I’m getting day 1.

Build an army of guys in blue clothes who ain’t *chuffed* to be conquered by guys in Red clothes and smash those two armies together until rebel uprisings/tyrannical empires cease to be a pressing concern

And if you want your Strategic RPG gameplay to be a bit more micro than macro, and more turn based, get yourself over to Stolen Realm. It’s an SRPG that, from the looks of things and based on the literal text used in the trailer, leans heavily on the Divinity/BG3 school of making every single battlefield just a absolute playground of environmental effects that you can go *ham* with with bonkers-deep character customization to further facilitate the going of ham.

It’s an easy silver medal place finish for SRPGs I’m most excited for this week!

Yo yo Squid Alpha recoiling my way towards ya with Arcade Archives announcements!

This week, we've got the bedrock of a Namco genre staple: the tank combat/maze game Tank Batarian from 1980! This would serve as the basis of the later Battle City and Tank Force, among others. It's even older than PAC-MAN! As the first, it's not the most sophisticated, but it still has an important role in Namco's arcade lineage.

Will people know that's Scooby Doo? We'll find out! Til another opportunity to share arcade news approaches, farewell!
